    Performance of the VIDYA Indicator Using Bootstrap

    This paper analyses the performance of the Volatility Index Dynamic Average Indicator (VIDYA) as a method for technical trading. The question was whether or not the buy and sell signals generated by VIDYA could allow a trader to outperform the benchmark rate of return. The strategy is implemented in a similar way to a standard moving average crossover where two lines are charted: a short period VIDYA and a long period VIDYA. The four combinations of VIDYA were used were as follows: 6 with 21 periods, 9 with 21 periods, 12 with 21 periods, and 21 with 50 periods. When the shorter period VIDYA is above the longer period this signals that the underlying asset should be bought. Conversely, when the long period VIDYA is above the short period VIDYA this generates a short signal for the underlying asset. A historical back test was conducted on daily data for SPY and FXE to generate a daily return for trading with the VIDYA. The returns were compared to a benchmark of a buy and hold strategy for SPY and FXE, respectively. A relative performance variable was calculated by taking the difference between the loss of the benchmark and the loss of the strategy. As pointed out in their paper, “Data-Snooping, Technical Trading Rule Performance, and the Bootstrap” by Sullivan et al, data snooping is a serious problem when conducting a back test solely on historical data. I controlled for data snooping via bootstrapping by conducting an out of sample test using Hansen’s SPA test. Rather than bootstrapping the underlying price data and running the back test on that, the bootstrap was conducted on the relative performance variable. These two methodologies should be equivalent but the latter is computationally less intense. None of the trading strategies were found to yield a significant return over the benchmark. At the end, this paper recommends further analysis that should be done

    Apresentamos um estudo da produção escrita de alunos do quarto ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública municipal, em uma tarefa em fases contendo uma questão aberta de Matemática. Nosso objetivo foi investigar o modo como os alunos lidaram com esse tipo de questão, por meio do levantamento das estratégias mais utilizadas e dos erros mais frequentes. Utilizamos uma tarefa em fases numa perspectiva de avaliação como prática de investigação e oportunidade de aprendizagem, que nos auxilia fornecendo informações sobre o raciocínio matemático dos alunos, bem como propicia reflexões a respeito da nossa própria prática docente.This paper presents a study of the written production of Elementary School students in the fourth grade on a task divided in steps containing an open question of Mathematics. The objective was to investigate how students dealt with this type of issue through discovering the strategies most used and the most frequent errors. It was used a task divided in steps with an assessment perspective as a research practice and a learning opportunity, which helped to provide some information on the students’ mathematical reasoning, as well as aiding on reflections upon teaching practice

A partir das fontes encontradas no Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro, verificamos que Fontoura se enquadra na categoria de expert da educação no estado da Guanabara. E um saber objetivado pelo referido professor estava relacionado ao ensino de aritmética

    Our financial and market action change every minute of every day. These markets are dynamic because traders constantly adjust to changing perceptions and participants. Therefore we need dynamic indicators that vary the time periode used in analyzing market action. Variable Index Dynamic Average (VIDYA) is an indicator that adapted Exponential Moving Average (EMA) that can dynamically follow the movements of stock prices. Equal as Exponential Moving Average (EMA), VIDYA also need weight in its calculation methods. In this paper, the weight of EMA is used to determine the weight of VIDYA. VIDYA can be calculated using three different methods, such as standard deviation, Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO), and coefficient of determination. These calculation method is used to determine the volatility index that worth to predict stock price movements and predict the trend in the future. In addition, VIDYA can be used as trading strategy and determine buy signal or sell signal that using the breakout point.
