Mapping and permafrost altitudes in a periglacial environment: The Laguna del Diamante Reserve (Central Andes, Argentina)
The Laguna del Diamante Reserve, in the Province of Mendoza (Argentina), a protected area in a volcanic caldera (around 15 km in diameter), encloses the Maipo Volcano, 5,323 m (a snow and ice-capped volcano), and the Diamante Laguna at 3,300 m a. s. l., which constitutes an important water resource for the province. A geomorphological map, made on an ASTER image from aerial photographs and corroborated by fieldwork, reflects how this area, although previously glaciated, is at present an outstanding periglacial environment with a few residual glaciers. Talus slopes, debris cones, alluvial fans, debris flow deposits, landslides and rockglaciers cover the Maipo flanks and the slopes surrounding the caldera. Periglacial landforms, occurrence of ice found during fieldwork, and rockglaciers were used to make a first approach to determine permafrost altitude. The inferior limit of quasi continuous permafrost at south exposition, detected by ice in a shelter in different years, is presently calculated at 3,870 ma. s. l. approximately. In the same valley however, and considering the noses of cryoforms with creeping permafrost, cryogenic activity is observed at a height of approx. 3,750 m a. s. l. In other sites of the area, cryoforms reach down to even 3,600 m with signs of inactivity. Historic registers from 1951–1952 indicated a height below 3,850 m a. s. l. as lower permafrost limit. Palaeo - permafrost was identified at 3,400–3,500 m a. s. l. approximately on the foot of the southern slope of the Maipo Volcano. At present, the zone, still in a paraglacial state, is characterized by intense cryodynamics and it is considered adequate to be proposed as “type region”.Das Naturschutzgebiet Laguna del Diamante liegt in der Provinz Mendoza, Argentinien und umfasst eine vulkanische Kaldera (von ca. 15 km Durchmesser), die den mit Schnee und Eis bedecken Maipo-Vulkan mit 5323 m Höhe und die Diamante Lagune auf 3300 m Höhe einschließt. In anderen Fällen erreichen Kryoformen 3600 m. Fil: Alonso, Victoria. Universidad de Oviedo; EspañaFil: Trombotto, Dario Tomas. My Harp Is Turned to Mourning: Tomás Luis de Victoria, Alonso Lobo, "Mysticism," and the Recording History of the Spanish Renaissance Canon
Until the 1961 publication of Spanish Cathedral Music in the Golden Age by the American musicologist Robert Stevenson, the music of the Spanish late Renaissance masters Juan Navarro (ca. 1530-1580), Alonso Lobo (1555-1617), Sebastián de Vivanco (c. 1551-1622), and Juan Esquivel (fl. 1608-1613) was unknown to all but a small number of specialists. Their music remained largely unrecorded until the late 1970s, and since then, each of the four composers has followed a different trajectory in the world of Renaissance music. Where does their music stand today, and what forces have played a role in shaping the reception of their music? To answer this question, the historiography of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), the most widely renowned Spanish Renaissance composer, is explored, through music history survey texts, early editions from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the recording history of his music, particularly in England. Additionally, a “meta-discography” of Victoria’s works, which compiles statistics detailing and how frequently each work by Victoria appears on disc, is constructed and analyzed. After musical analysis of some of Victoria’s most widely-recorded works, a similar meta-discography and analysis are made and applied to the music of Navarro, Lobo, Vivanco, and Esquivel, with the hope of better understanding which works have become canonical or are in the process of entering the canon. The historiography and recording history of Victoria’s music, as well as the association of the vague idea of “mysticism” with his music, has had some effect on the recording history of Navarro, Lobo, Vivanco, and Esquivel. The appendices include complete discographies of the music of Navarro, Lobo, Vivanco, and Esquivel, as well as the meta-discographies of those four composers as well as Victoria
Alonso de Ercilla's work has been an object of analysis from numerous points of view, specially literary, historical and even patriotic, but scarcely there exist studies of his geographical reality. To refilling this hollow I propose to contribute some information, with special support in the treatment that the author realizes of the wetlands or higrocoras.
Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories
Religious pathways to coping with personal death anxiety among older adult British Christians and Chinese Buddhists: afterlife beliefs, psychosocial maturity and regret management
Religion was proposed to account for the relatively low personal death anxiety found among older adults. This dissertation sought to examine the influence of religious afterlife beliefs, religiously enhanced psychosocial maturity and religious management of a past major regret on personal death anxiety in later life. Terror Management Theory and Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory were used to describe these three religious pathways to coping with personal death anxiety in later life. The cross-sectional postal survey samples consisted of 143 older adult British Christians and 141 older adult Chinese Buddhists. Structural Equation Modelling results from the British Christian survey study showed that intrinsic religiosity predicted lower personal death anxiety through: (a) fostering more benign afterlife beliefs; (b) enhancing psychosocial maturity; and (c) promoting emotional stability. No significant relationship between belief in reincarnation and personal death anxiety was found in the Chinese Buddhist survey study. Both survey studies failed to support the personal death anxiety buffering power of religious management of a past major life regret, although some religious coping strategies were associated with lower negative emotional appraisal towards the major life regret among older adults. The British survey study has been the first to demonstrate both the personal death anxiety buffering and psychosocial maturity enhancing power of religion in an increasingly secular society. The lack of relationship between Buddhist reincarnation beliefs and personal death anxiety suggests that not all religious afterlife beliefs have death anxiety buffering power as proposed by Terror Management Theory. The development of Buddhist reincarnation belief and Buddhist coping scales is a pioneering step towards developing research on under-explored Eastern non-theistic afterlife beliefs and coping measures. Implications for ways that help religious older adults cope with their personal death anxiety were discussed. Prospective cross cultural and cross-religion studies were recommended to replicate the present survey findings. Finally, self detachment (self negation) was proposed as the basis of an alternative death transcendence theory to be researched in future studies on personal death anxiety
