Untapped : Veloce detects calcium in the atmosphere of WASP-189b
High-resolution transmission spectroscopy has become a powerful tool for detecting atomic and ionic species in the atmospheres of ultra-hot Jupiters. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that the Australian-built Veloce spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope can resolve atmospheric signatures from transiting exoplanets. We observed a single transit of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-189b – a favourable target given its extreme irradiation and bright host star – and applied the cross-correlation technique using standardised templates. We robustly detect ionised calcium (Ca+) and find evidence for hydrogen (H), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), neutral calcium (Ca), titanium (Ti), ionised titanium (Ti+), ionised iron (Fe+), neutral iron (Fe), and ionised strontium (Sr+). The strongest detection was achieved in the red arm of Veloce, consistent with expectations due to the prominent Ca+ triplet at wavelengths around 850–870 nm. Our results validate Veloce’s capability for high-resolution atmospheric studies, highlighting it as an accessible, flexible facility to complement larger international telescopes. If future observations stack multiple transits, Veloce has the potential to reveal atmospheric variability, phase-dependent spectral changes, and detailed chemical compositions of highly irradiated exoplanets
Differential Acquisition of m-Sequences using Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation
In this contribution a novel sequential estimation method is proposed for the acquisition of -sequences. This sequential estimation method exploits the principle of iterative soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoding for enhancing the acquisition performance, and that of differential pre-processing for the sake of achieving an enhanced acquisition performance, when communicating over various communication environments. Hence the advocated acquisition arrangement is referred to as the Differential Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation (DRSSE) acquisition scheme. The DRSSE acquisition scheme exhibits a low complexity, which is similar to that of an -sequence generator, while achieving an acquisition time that is linearly dependent on the number of stages in the -sequence generator. A low acquisition time is achieved with the advent of the property that the proposed DRSSE scheme is capable of determining the real-time reliabilities associated with the decision concerning a set of, say , consecutive chips. This set of consecutive chips constitutes the sufficient initial condition for enabling the local -sequence generator to produce a synchronized local despreading -sequence replica. Owing to these attractive characteristics, the DRSSE acquisition scheme constitutes a promising initial synchronization scheme for acquisition of long -sequences, when communicating over various propagation environments

Procedure di prova chepermettano di valutare l’influenza della velocità di deformazione sulle proprietà meccaniche di un materialesono fondamentali per una corretta progettazione di strutture sicure ad impatto.In questo articolo viene presentata una procedura per prove di trazione veloce che prevede l’utilizzo di unaslitta verticale e di una macchina ad inversione.In fase di sviluppo, per verificarne il funzionamento, sono state condotte prove usando provini ottenuti dapiastre di due diversi materiali: un acciaio dolce d’uso comune e una lega leggera di alluminio tipica dellecostruzioni aeronautiche. I dati ottenuti per i due materiali sono ripetibili e confrontati coi dati presenti inbibliografia hanno mostrato che la procedura di prova sviluppata è in grado di fornire dati accurati
VELOcities of CEpheids (VELOCE) : I. High-precision radial velocities of Cepheids
We present the first data release of VELOcities of CEpheids (VELOCE), dedicated to measuring the high-precision radial velocities (RVs) of Galactic classical Cepheids (henceforth, Cepheids). The first data release (VELOCE DR1) comprises 18 225 RV measurements of 258 bona fide classical Cepheids on both hemispheres collected mainly between 2010 and 2022, along with 1161 observations of 164 stars, most of which had previously been misclassified as Cepheids. The median per-observation RV uncertainty for Cepheids is 0.037 km s-1 and reaches 2 m s-1 for the brightest stars observed with Coralie. Non-variable standard stars were used to characterize RV zero-point stability and to provide a base for future cross-calibrations. We determined zero-point differences between VELOCE and 31 literature data sets using template fitting, which we also used to investigate linear period changes of 146 Cepheids. In total, 76 spectroscopic binary Cepheids and 14 candidate binary Cepheids were identified using VELOCE data alone, which are investigated in detail in a companion Paper (VELOCE II). VELOCE DR1 provides a number of new insights into the pulsational variability of Cepheids, most importantly: a) the most detailed description of the Hertzsprung progression based on RVs to date; b) the identification of double-peaked bumps in the pulsation curve; and c) clear evidence that virtually all Cepheids feature spectroscopic variability signals that lead to modulated RV variability at the level of tens to hundreds of m s-1 and that cannot be satisfactorily modeled using single-periodic Fourier series. We identified 36 stars exhibiting such modulated variability, of which 4 also exhibit orbital motion. Linear radius variations depend strongly on pulsation period and a steep increase in slope of the ΔR/p vs. log P-relation is found near 10 days. This effect, combined with significant RV amplitude differences at fixed period, challenges the existence of a tight relation between Baade-Wesselink projection factors and pulsation periods. We investigated the accuracy of RV time series measurements, Uγ, and RV amplitudes published by Gaia's third data release (Gaia DR3) and determined an offset of 0.65 ± 0.11 km s-1 relative to VELOCE. Whenever possible, we recommend adopting a single set of template correlation parameters for distinct classes of large-amplitude variable stars to avoid systematic offsets in Uγ among stars belonging to the same class. The peak-to-peak amplitudes of Gaia RVs exhibit significant (16%) dispersion. Potential differences of RV amplitudes require further inspection, notably in the context of projection factor calibration

Il testo quindi introduce e in parte riepiloga i contenuti delle tre parti componenti il volume: le introduzione e le postfazioni che oltre ad approfondire le conoscenze sui processi che hanno condotto alla crisi e che stanno caratterizzando l’attuale fase di cambiamento della società, della struttura economica e dell’organizzazione territoriale, inquadrano il problema in una prospettiva storica ed in un contesto internazionale; le “Voci della città” che raccolgono le interviste agli assessori di alcune città italiane (Torino, Milano, Venezia, Padova, Trieste, Bologna, Firenze, Napoli, Bari, Palermo, Messina) che cercano di far fronte alla crisi nonostante i forti tagli al bilancio imposti dalla razionalizzazione della spesa pubblica; gli “Sguardi esperti”, saggi che riflettono sulle problematiche insorte in vari ambiti con forti riflessi sulla città e forti implicazioni sul governo delle trasformazioni urbane

M. N. Srinivas, the well known sociologist is widely recognised as architect of modern Indian sociology and social anthropology. His publications have been analysed by year, domain, authorship pattern, channels of communication used. Keywords, etc. The results indicate that the papers published by him are of a nature that qualify him to be a 'role model' for the younger generations to emulate.
By the end of 1995, Srinivas had to his credit 144 papers which, included 33 broad papers in sociology and anthropology; 18 papers in social change; 28 papers in village studies; 12 papers on religion; 17 papers on caste and 36 papers of general popular interest. The periods 1958-61 and 1974-77, when Srinivas was 38-41 and 58-61 years old. were his most productive periods with highest publication activity
The stability of IQ in people with low intellectual ability: an analysis of the literature
A meta-analysis of the stability of low IQ (IQ 80) was performed on IQ tests that have been
commonly used—tests that were derived by D. Wechsler (1949, 1955, 1974, 1981, 1991, 1997)
and those based on the Binet scales (L. M. Terman, 1960; L. M. Terman & Merrill, 1972). Weighted-
mean stability coefficients of .77 and .78 were found for Verbal IQ (V IQ) and Performance IQ
(P IQ) on the Wechsler tests and .82 for Full-Scale IQ (FS IQ) on both Wechsler and Binet tests,
for a mean test–retest interval of 2.8 years. Although the majority of FS IQs changed by less than
6 points, 14% changed by 10 points or more. The author suggests that the results of IQ assessment
should be treated with more caution than previously thought
