BIANCA (Brain Intensity AbNormality Classification Algorithm): a new tool for automated segmentation of white matter hyperintensities
Reliable quantification of white matter hyperintensities of presumed vascular origin (WMHs) is increasingly needed, given the presence of these MRI findings in patients with several neurological and vascular disorders, as well as in elderly healthy subjects. We present BIANCA (Brain Intensity AbNormality Classification Algorithm), a fully automated, supervised method for WMH detection, based on the k-nearest neighbour (k-NN) algorithm. Relative to previous k-NN based segmentation methods, BIANCA offers different options for weighting the spatial information, local spatial intensity averaging, and different options for the choice of the number and location of the training points. BIANCA is multimodal and highly flexible so that the user can adapt the tool to their protocol and specific needs. We optimised and validated BIANCA on two datasets with different MRI protocols and patient populations (a “predominantly neurodegenerative” and a “predominantly vascular” cohort). BIANCA was first optimised on a subset of images for each dataset in terms of overlap and volumetric agreement with a manually segmented WMH mask. The correlation between the volumes extracted with BIANCA (using the optimised set of options), the volumes extracted from the manual masks and visual ratings showed that BIANCA is a valid alternative to manual segmentation. The optimised set of options was then applied to the whole cohorts and the resulting WMH volume estimates showed good correlations with visual ratings and with age. Finally, we performed a reproducibility test, to evaluate the robustness of BIANCA, and compared BIANCA performance against existing methods. Our findings suggest that BIANCA, which will be freely available as part of the FSL package, is a reliable method for automated WMH segmentation in large cross-sectional cohort studies. © 2016 The Author

A presente pesquisa está vinculada no programa de extensão ‘Programa de acessibilidade integral: inclusão da PcD (Pessoa com Deficiência) à comunidade acadêmica e seu entorno’, aprovado no edital PIAEXT/UPE 2018. Acredita-se que a devida iluminação em elementos de sinalização possa proporcionar melhoria na percepção e orientação espacial, além de minimizar o risco de acidentes de PcD. O objetivo desta pesquisa é propor a iluminação do projeto de sinalização de uma instituição de ensino, como parte integrante do projeto de acessibilidade integral. De forma geral, visa contribuir na percepção e orientação espacial da pessoa com deficiência visual (baixa visão), de modo a incluir as PcD nas atividades cotidianas de uma instituição de ensino. A metodologia da pesquisa fez uso das técnicas de check-list e de Passeio Acompanhado (DISCHINGER, 2012). O check-list foi elaborado de acordo com a NBR 90/50. No passeio acompanhado, tem o propósito de apontar as dificuldades que serão encontradas durante o trajeto, consequentemente atribuindo a NR 17 para a segurança e o bem-estar para todos. Posteriormente, haverá medições dos níveis de iluminância dos ambientes da instituição, com o uso do equipamento de medição de iluminação em lux (lx) luxímetro digital. Por fim, mediante os dados coletados e analisados, será elaborado um relatório de diagnóstico e elaborada a proposta de iluminação para o projeto de sinalização. Espera-se a acessibilidade das pessoas com baixa visão na instituição de ensino estudada, desprovida de barreiras físicas, perceptivas e cognitivas, de modo a assegurar ao usuário, sua plena autonomia e melhoria na qualidade de vida
Forecast horizon of 5th – 6th – 7th long wave and short-period of contraction in economic cycles
The purpose of this essay is to determine the forecast horizon of the fifth, sixth and seventh long wave. As the period of each long wave can change according to the data, it has been used a deterministic approach, based on historical chronologies of USA and UK economies worked out by several scholars, to determine average timing, period and forecast error of future long waves. In addition, the analysis shows that long waves have average upwave period longer than average downwave one. This result is also confirmed by US Business Cycles that have average contractions shorter than expansions phase over time.Forecast Horizon, Long Waves, Kondratieff Waves, Business Cycles, Asymmetric Path
Metrics for driving political economy of energy and growth
Energy metrics is the development of a whole new theoretical framework for the conception and measurement of energy and economic performances, energy efficiency and productivity improvements with important political economy implications consistent with the best use of all natural and economic resources. The purpose of this research is to present some vital energy indicators based on magnitude and scale of energy weakness, GDP per barrel that is an indicator of energy productivity and barrels per capita that is an indicator of energy efficiency. Predicting strategic change of public research institutions under unstable negative growth
The purpose of this paper is to forecast and analyse, by a demographic perspective, the organizational behaviour of public research labs. The research focuses on the biggest Italian public research body. Demographic models of growth, based on different human resource policies, show the uncertain and retrogressive evolutionary change of Italian public research bodies that would halve their research personnel over the forecast horizon. These results provide vital information to the public management about the weaknesses and environmental threats in order to support decisions for improving the strategic change and survival of public research institutions over time.Organizational Studies, Forecasting, Public Research Institutions, Internal Demography
Possible technological determinants and primary energy resources of future long waves
The purpose of this paper is to conjecture the possible underlying technological determinants of future long waves, based on prominent studies of scholars and leading forecasting companies; in particular, this research assumes the converging of nano-bio-info-cogno technologies to be the foundation of 5th and 6th economic cycles, whereas the future technological revolution that may underpin the 7th long wave is assumed to be Faster-Than-Light technologies. History, Changes and Continuities in the Handmade Textiles made by the Ñätho Women of San Felipe de los Alzati, Michoacán
Los bordados otomíes de San Felipe de los Alzati, Michoacán, que forman parte de la vestimenta tradicional, están en proceso de desplazamiento tras el paso de las telas e hilazas comerciales y la ropa del mercado global. El presente artículo da un panorama sobre ya khoti o labores bordadas por mujeres de la comunidad que son hablantes de la lengua hñätho. La historia de los textiles es el hilo que entreteje la memoria y la vida plasmada en lenguaje de los bordados. También se da cuenta aquí de las trasformaciones en la producción de los textiles con relación a la cultura y la lengua hñätho.The Otomi embroidery of San Felipe de los Alzati, which is part of the traditional clothing, are in the gradual displacement after the arrival of the commercial fabrics and thread and the clothing of the global market. This text gives an overview of Ya khoti or embroidered cloths by the women who are speakers of Hñätho Language. The history of textiles is the thread that interweaves memory and life embodied in the embroidery language. Tracer Tests for Characterizing Malm Geothermal Reservoirs Within the German BMWi Project TRENDS: A Feasibility Study
AbstractThe research project TRENDS (“Tracer-assisted evaluation of reservoir behavior under expansive deployment schemes for Malm geothermal resources in the Munich area”) aims at quantifying the hydrogeology of Malm geothermal resources with a focus on fluid transport parameters, and identifying possible restrictions to reservoir exploitation resulting from either hydraulic or geothermal heat supply ‘competition’ effects between ‘adjacent’ reservoirs. While it is beyond doubt that these aims cannot be achieved without the use of some fluid-based tracking procedure for quantifying fluid transport (viz.: tracer tests), the use of artificial tracers is challenged by the very large size of Malm geothermal reservoirs, implying very long residence times (RT) of circulating fluids and strong dilution of tracers therein. A series of M. Sc. thesis projects conducted at the University of Göttingen addresses tracer test design, evaluation and interpretation problems specifically associated with the ‘very long RT’ issue. Preliminary findings from these projects, and some recommendations for future tracer test design are presented
