Between citizen and vigilante journalism
Get PDFNew forms of online citizen journalism have refreshed political communication in Africa. New information technologies are providing readers with previously unavailable opportunities to comment and produce their own news and information that is able to influence political processes. However, all is not rosy about Africa’s new citizen journalism. While it has produced reliable and quality information that African democracies require, it has also produced vigilante journalism - a vindictive and revengeful form of gathering and disseminating news and information. Vigilante journalism is similar to the necklacing that was common in South African in the 1980s. The article discusses how, at the height of the Zimbabwe crisis (2007-2008), the news website, ZimDaily, led a vigilante campaign to publicly name and have perceived relatives and children of Zimbabwean ruling party officials deported from ‘Western’ countries. The idea was to help resolve the political and economic crises in Zimbabwe. The editors refused to question the ethics and morality of the exercise. Thus, encouraged by the website’s editors, Zimbabwean users of the website took the law in their own hands and published addresses, telephone numbers and other personal information about anyone thought to be related to those in government in Zimbabwe. This blurred the boundaries between citizen and vigilante journalism. The resultant vigilante journalism by groups seeking instant justice was in a way similar to the necklacing, even though this was in a virtual sense. It is clear that the emerging new media spaces in Africa function like double-edged swords able to either build or destroy democracy
The “Vigilante Spirit”: Surveillance and Racial Violence in 1980s New York
No full textThis article details the "vigilante spirit", a term used by New York Governor Maria Cuomo to describe the seizure and execuation of state power by Bernhard Goetz in his attack on four black teenagers in December of 1984. It argues that the vigilante spirit is an expression of thoughts, feelings, and practices that produce threats and then assemble the tools it deems necessary to combat them. It further argues that the vigilante spirit, expressed by Goetz in his attack, was also encoded in various cultural texts produced in the 1980s and uses Frank Miller\u27s The Dark Knight Returns as an example. By reading these two case studies together, it seeks to explain the cultural politics that underpinned racial violence in the 1980s

Vigilante rituals theory: A cultural explanation of vigilante violence
Get PDFThis contribution offers a new theory of vigilante violence: vigilante rituals theory. We argue that vigilante violence originates from fear, righteous anger, and retaliatory punitive desire that stems from violations of moral imperatives, which are Durkheimian sacred values. We argue that morally outraged people transform their fear and anger into violent action through mobilization and bodily alignment in vigilante rituals. These rituals can restore the integrity of moral imperatives and generate the unity of the in-group. Further, we propose the following variable socio-legal conditions that affect the likelihood for vigilante rituals to occur: legal legitimacy, an exposure to violence, and authorities’ encouragement of (violent) self-help. We conclude by noting how the theory advances prevailing explanations and how it can be used in future empirical research

Get PDF“Death Note” merupakan seuah anime yang diadaptasi dari manga berjudul Desu Noto. Karakter Light dakam anime ini menggambarkan vigilante yang mana pada umumnya muncul pada film Hollywood. Rumusan masalah yang ingin dijawab adalh bagaimana representasi vigilante dalam anime “Death Note”. Untuk menjawab rumusan masalah tersebut, peneliti menggunakan metode analisis naratif Propp. Konsep-konsep yang digunakan untuk menjawab rumusan masalah, yaitu vigilante number, karakteristik vigilante, relasi antara vigilante dengan korbannya, dan motivasi vigilante. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah representasi vigilante dalam anime “Death Note” dipengaruhi oleh budaya Jepang yang mana vigilante direpresentasikan sebagai bentuk obsesi masyarakat Jepang yang ingin negaranya aman dan dipengaruhi oleh kepercayaan Shinto dalam praktik membunuh korbannya. Meskipun dipengaruhi oleh budaya Jepang, representasi vigilante dalam anime ini juga dipengaruhi oleh gaya penggabaran dalam film-film Hollywood

No full textVigilante is not just criminal phenomenon. It is an economic, political, and ideo-logical movement. It is a mechanism of domination over ‘outside’ in the name of the system. If the system does not set up a hegemony over ‘outside, it establishes domination via vigilante. ‘Outside’ is pacified by vigilante. With this way, vigi-lante politically provides production of the system and reproduction of that. Therefore, vigilante shapes contemporary democracies. Developed countries like developing countries strengthen their capitalist democracies if there is a protest from ‘outside’. Vigilante is used for elimination of anti-hegemonic blocs which aim protest to current capitalist system. Neoliberalism, which has been in crisis from 2008, uses vigilante from developing countries to developed countries. So democratic regimes have turned into the type of democracy vigilante. It can be hypothesized that vigilantes may be more obvious with the deepening crisis of capitalism. In this framework the type of democracy vigilante is an attempt to the solution for neoliberalism, which has been in a crisis. The aim of this study is to analyze the type of democracy vigilante, which is derived by the movement of vigilante. The scope of this study is democracy experiences which are dominated by the type of democracy vigilante. The hypothesis of this study is today, the type of democracy vigilante, which can be observed in the USA as prototype, is an attempt of the solution for neoliberalism to weather a crisis in thorough world capitalist countries in which capitalism have been dominant system.Vigilante yalnızca bir kriminal olgu değildir. Vigilante, ekonomik, politik ve ideolojik bir harekettir. Vigilante ‘dışarısı’ üzerinde, sistem adına, tahakküm kurma mekanizmasıdır. Sistem eğer hegemonya yoluyla ‘dışarısı’ üzerinde ege-menlik kuramazsa, vigilante aracılığıyla tahakküm kurmaktadır. ‘Dışarısı’, vigi-lante aracılığıyla pasifize edilmektedir. Bu yanıyla vigilante, siyasal anlamda, si-yasal sistemin üretimi ve yeniden üretimini sağlamaktadır. Vigilante bu yanıyla günümüz demokrasilerine şekil vermektedir. Gelişmekte olan ülkelerin yanında gelişmiş ülkeler de kapitalist demokrasilerini eğer ‘dışarıdan’ bir itiraz varsa vigi-lante aracılığıyla sağlamlaştırmaktadır. Vigilante, mevcut kapitalist sisteme itiraz eden karşı hegemonya odaklarını tasfiye etmek için kullanılmaktadır. 2008 Dün-ya ekonomik krizinden bu yana krizde olan neoliberalizm de gelişmekte olan ülkelerden başlayarak gelişmiş ülkelere doğru vigilanteleri kullanmaktadır. Bu yanıyla artık, demokratik rejimler, vigilante tip demokratik rejimlere dönüşmek-tedir. Kapitalizmin krizi derinleştikçe, vigilantelerin daha fazla görünür olabile-ceği varsayılabilir. Bu çerçevede vigilante tip demokrasi, krize, neoliberal bir çö-züm denemesidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı; Vigilante hareketinden türetilen vigilante tip demokrasinin analizini yapmaktır. Çalışmanın kapsamı; vigilante iktidarının egemen olduğu demokrasi deneyimleridir. Çalışmanın hipotezi; ABD’de prototip olarak gördüğümüz Vigilante tip demokrasi, bugün, neoliberal kapitalist düzen-de, kapitalizmin egemen olduğu dünya ülkeleri için kriz aşmak için bir çözüm olarak denenmesidir
