Ten years profile soil moisture and temperature measurements in Twente
No full textThe Twente region in the east of the Netherlands hold a network that monitors since 2009 profile soil moisture and temperature at twenty locations mostly in the rural environment. In addition, intensive measurement campaigns have been performed in 2009, 2015, 2016, and 2017 at number of measurement locations as a part of MSc and PhD research. The development of the network infrastructure has been supported through various EU and NWO-funded projects, and forthcoming data has been successfully used for the validation of satellite derived surface soil moisture products.
The early development of the network has been described in Dente et al. (2011), but over the years the design of the network has altered considerably with the most recent updates documented in Van der Velde et al. (in review).
In 2019, the Twente network has been operational for more than a decade and with this deposit we would like to make this data freely and well documented available for use by the science and professional communities. An accompanying data paper is under development, which provide additional background information.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Meta-analyses identify 13 loci associated with age at menopause and highlight DNA repair and immune pathways
No full textTo newly identify loci for age at natural menopause, we carried out a meta-analysis of 22 genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 38,968 women of European descent, with replication in up to 14,435 women. In addition to four known loci, we identified 13 loci newly associated with age at natural menopause (at P < 5 × 10(-8)). Candidate genes located at these newly associated loci include genes implicated in DNA repair (EXO1, HELQ, UIMC1, FAM175A, FANCI, TLK1, POLG and PRIM1) and immune function (IL11, NLRP11 and PRRC2A (also known as BAT2)). Gene-set enrichment pathway analyses using the full GWAS data set identified exoDNase, NF-κB signaling and mitochondrial dysfunction as biological processes related to timing of menopause
Renal risk markers and patient prognosis in chronic kidney disease
No full textMensen met een verhoogde hoeveelheid albumine in hun urine hebben een snellere achteruitgang in hun nierfunctie en een veel hoger risico op nierfalen. Daarmee staat vast dat het meten van albumine, een soort eiwit, een goede en relatief eenvoudige methode is om patiënten met chronische nierschade vroegtijdig op te sporen. Dit blijkt uit promotie-onderzoek van Marije van der Velde van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. Haar studie was onderdeel van het grote PREVEND-onderzoek naar hart-, nier- en vaatziekten. Zij promoveert op 12 juni 2013 aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen op haar proefschrift. Ongeveer 10 procent van de bevolking van westerse landen heeft chronische nierschade. Veel patiënten weten niet dat ze hieraan lijden. Er zijn echter wel ernstige gezondheidsrisico’s aan verbonden. Hierbij is te denken aan hart- en vaatziekten, de noodzaak tot het ondergaan van dialyse of transplantatie en vroegtijdig overlijden. Vroegtijdig opsporen en behandelen van patiënten met chronische nierschade kan deze risico’s voorkomen. Uit het onderzoek van Van der Velde blijkt dat vroeg opsporen kan door het testen van urine. Mensen met een verhoogde hoeveelheid albumine in de urine – dit wordt albuminurie genoemd - hebben een snellere achteruitgang in de nierfunctie dan normaal. Bovendien kan het risico op nierfalen tot 100 keer zo groot worden. Van der Velde stelde verder vast in haar onderzoek dat patiënten die lijden aan het metabool syndroom (dit zijn mensen met overgewicht) én die een verhoogde hoeveelheid albumine in de urine hebben, een verhoogde kans hebben op het ontwikkelen van complicaties. “Hierbij is te denken aan diabetes mellitus, hart- en vaatziekten en chronische nierschade”, aldus Van der Velde. De uitkomsten van haar onderzoek zijn aanleiding geweest de definitie en classificatie van chronische nierschade aan te passen. Volgens Van der Velde is het meten van albumine in de urine onder de bevolking een veelbelovende methode om patiënten met chronische nierschade vroegtijdig op te sporen. Naast het opsporen bleek ook behandeling mogelijk. “Met een bloeddrukverlagend middel lopen de hoeveelheden eiwitten in de nieren terug”, aldus de promovenda. De volgende stap is kijken of deze behandeling ook op lange termijn werkt. Als dat zo is, dan beveelt Van der Velde aan om via een bevolkingsonderzoek op albumine in de urine chronische nierschade op te sporen
