Subjective Measures of Economic Well-Being and the Influence of Income Uncertainty
No full textThis paper provides evidence that subjective measures of individual well being can be used to study the impact of income uncertainty from an ex ante point of view. Two different measures of subjective well being are under study: Satisfaction with household income and the income evaluation question as developed by Van Praag. It can be shown that satisfaction with income is more affected by ex ante than by ex post volatility of income. The ordinal version of the Van Praag approach might be biased if income uncertainty is essential. The Connexion Between Old and New Approaches to Financial Satisfaction
No full textIn this paper we compare the new satisfaction evaluation approach, developed in the nineties by Oswald, Clark, Blanchflower and others with the older income evaluation (IEQ) approach, developed by Van Praag and Kapteyn in the seventies of the previous century. We find that both approaches yield strikingly similar results with respect to financial satisfaction. The IEQ-approach yields additional insights, but it is not well applicable to other life domains than finance. It is argued that the usual Probit specification implies a specific cardinalization and, consequently, is less ordinal than usually thought. It is shown that the Probit-approach may be replaced by three other equivalent specifications that have some computational and intuitive advantages.financial satisfaction, income evaluation, Probit-models, cardinal utility

A theoretical investigation has been carried out of the views of Van Praag
about humanism and spirituality in relation to those of H. Kunneman, T.
Todorov and S. van IJssel.
The research can be subdivided into four parts. Part I (Introduction and
Chapter 1) introduces the for this study relevant concepts and a more detailed
specification of the research topic, that is subdivided in three research
questions. Part II (Chapters 2 and 3) contains a short bibliographical
overview of the life of Van Praag, next to his theoretical point of
views. Part III (Chapter 4, 5, and 6) contains the theoretical views of Kunneman,
Todorov and Van IJssel. Finally, in part IV comparisons are made
and conclusions will be drawn.
Each chapter will be preceded by a narrative text, witnessing and representing
the process of the quest and the moments of contemplation; they
form also the basis for reflection and scientific insights.
The aim of the research is to get insight in the theoretical viewpoints of
Van Praag about humanism in relation to spirituality and whether this insight
in his theoretical developments might be of interest for current debates
about humanism. He could be considered as one of the leading figures
in both the theoretical developments on humanistic premises and the
organization of the humanistic movement in the Netherlands in the previous
century

In aanloop naar dit debat nemen Bernard van Praag en Henk Hemmers een voorschot door te pleiten om nogmaals de aannames die ten grondslag liggen aan pensioenhervormingen tegen het licht te houden. Naar hun oordeel is het huidige pensioenstelsel houdbaar en is afschaffing van de doorsneesystematiek onnodig. Zij twijfelen aan de waarde van het begrip ‘dekkingsgraad’ als criterium voor de gezondheid van een pensioenfonds en pleiten voor een evaluatie op grond van de te verwachten kasstroom
Well-being Inequality and Reference Groups: An Agenda for New Research
No full textIn this paper it is argued that subjective well-being of the individual depends on two types of variables. The first type consists of characteristics of the individual himself, such as age, health, income, etc. The second type of variables consists of the characteristics of the individuals belonging to his reference group. The vast literature about happiness, quality of life, and well-being informs us extensively about the effects of objective variables. How the second type affects well-being is much less investigated. It is argued that the concept of well-being inequality cannot be properly defined without taking the referencing process into account. The reference effect depends on how frequently individuals compare with others and on the degree of social transparency in society. We attempt to give a structural embedding of the idea of reference groups in SWB-models. In this paper we employ the reference-extended model for incorporating in happiness studies the concept of inequality in happiness or SWB. Finally, we plead for an extension of the present happiness paradigm by setting up a new additional agenda for empirical research in order to get quantified knowledge about the referencing process. No full textAan deze kleine bundel ter gelegenheid van Carlo van Praags afscheid van het SCP hebben drie auteurs bijgedragen: Hans Boutellier, Paul de Beer en de jubilaris zelf. Twee van hen zitten aardig op iin lijn. Zowel Boutellier als Van Praag signaleren dat onze samenleving in een morele crisis verkeert die zich, onder meer, uit in een sterke stijging van de criminaliteit sinds de jaren zestig. Beide auteurs wijzen op culturele veranderingen als verklaring hiervoor. Boutellier spreekt van fragmentering van de publieke moraal en van een individualisering die de coherentie van morele opvattingen doorbrak en van individuele motieven en drijfveren die een prominente plaats in onze cultuur hebben gekregen. Deze ontwikkeling hoeft niet uitsluitend negatief geduid te worden. Het individu werd bevrijd uit een vaak beknellende omgeving en meer dan dat aangemoedigd om het levensproject in eigen hand te nemen. Het resultaat van deze collectieve bevrijding is evenwel niet over de hele linie bemoedigend. Dezelfde burger die het ideaal van de individuele ontplooiing boven alles koestert, voelt zich bedreigd door de asociale koers die de zich ontplooiende medeburger nogal eens blijkt te kiezen.Daarbij hoeven we volgens Van Praag niet alleen aan criminaliteit te denken, maar bijvoorbeeld ook aan de agressie waarmee dienstverleners als leraren, artsen, treinpersoneel en loketbeambten te kampen hebben. Van Praag ziet deze verschijnselen vooral als een indirect gevolg van de individualisering. De generaties die de laatste drie ` vier decennia zijn grootgebracht, hebben te maken gehad met een permissieve opvoeding tegen een achtergrond van welvaart. De modale persoonlijkheid van onze dagen draagt daarvan de sporen. Meer dan vroeger verwachten mensen hun zin te krijgen.De Beer laat zich in zijn beschouwing niet uit over het al dan niet bestaan van een morele crisis, maar hij plaatst vraagtekens bij het verschijnsel individualisering dat tot een dergelijke crisis zou hebben geleid. De individualisering die in de Sociale en Culturele Rapporten van het SCP een nogal prominente rol speelt, is volgens hem door het SCP nooit naar behoren aangetoond. Integendeel, het empirisch materiaal waarvan het SCP zich bedient, wijst eerder op het tegendeel. De heterogeniteit in bij de bevolking levende opvattingen is niet toegenomen en de vertrouwde achtergrondvariabelen, zoals geslacht, leeftijd, opleiding en welstand, blijken in de loop van de tijd aan verklaringskracht voor deze opvattingen te hebben gewonnen in plaats van verloren. Het is een prikkelende visie die voldoende discussiestof biedt voor een volgend symposium
