Introduction: Excessive separation of the abdominal muscles along the linea alba is called diastasis recti abdominis (DRA). DRA most often occurs in women during pregnancy and after childbirth. Any gap, no bulge/ridge above, below or in the navel area of less than 2.5 cm is normal. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to determine the awareness of pregnant women about DRA and its treatment during pregnancy and after childbirth. Methods: In the first part of the thesis, a descriptive work method was used, which was obtained through a critical review of scientific and professional literature about DRA. In the second part of the thesis, quantitative research was carried out. The data for the research were obtained with the help of an anonymous online survey. The questionnaire had 33 closed and semi-open questions. The questionnaire was published on the EnKlik Survey portal. Results: Out of 241 pregnant women, who completely filled out the questionnaire, 91 % had already heard of DRA. Most pregnant women (24 %) obtained information about DRA with the help of social networks. The occurrence of DRA during pregnancy was not checked with the majority of pregnant women (59 %) and only one fifth of pregnant women knew that they have the option of physiotherapeutic treatment in case of discovered DRA during pregnancy and/or after childbirth. One half of pregnant women were moderately physically active at least 3 times a week, but only a few of them regularly included exercises for the transversus abdominis muscles (9%) and pelvic floor muscles training (19%) in their physical activity. The Mann-Whitney U test did not show a statistically significant difference in knowledge about DRA between pregnant women with and without medical education (p=0.07), and between pregnant women who were pregnant for the first time and those who had been pregnant several times (p= 0.1). Using the Chi-square test, we found a statistically significant difference in activity that is physical exercising - comparing women who are pregnant for the first time to those who have been pregnant several times (p=0.01). Discussion and conclusion: The results of our survey showed that the vast majority of pregnant women had heard of DRA, but very few pregnant women obtained information from qualified health professionals. Although DRA is a very common occurrence in pregnancy and postpartum, DRA is still rarely checked. Pregnant women in our study rarely knew that in case of problems with DRA, they have the option of physiotherapy treatment. DRA should be given greater emphasis in the preventive health care of pregnant women

Effective visualization of stereo particle image velocimetry vector fields of a turbulent boundary layer

    No full text
Stereo particle image velocimetry datasets contain three-dimensional information over a plane, from which multiple quantities can be derived at each point. The task of visualizing these different parameters simultaneously is challenging, and this inhibits our ability to analyse and derive firm conclusions about the physics of the flow. Currently, the common approach is to view each parameter separately in different images. Such an approach is very inefficient, especially for large fields of view where many important structures and features co-exist. In this paper we discuss several ways in which the primary quantities can be viewed simultaneously in the same image. The simplest method is to use different colours for each parameter and to overlay all the different colours on one image. The limitations of such an approach will be described. Other methods considered involve using texture generated from a line integral convolution algorithm to convey instantaneous velocity direction and magnitude. Animated texture is also described, together with variants involving combined colour and out-of-plane height. The use of height in tandem with colour and animated texture is a useful method in distinguishing the different parameters in the regions of overlap

Then H0 is rejected, so it can be concluded that students' narrative writing skills can achieve good criteria by applying the Picture And Picture learning model to media images

Wavelet analysis of broadband signals to extract amplitude and frequency modulation: An application to wall turbulence

    No full text
Large-scale structures in wall-bounded turbulent flows are known to exhibit a coupling with the small-scale energy in the flow. Besides a superposition of large-scale energy onto the near-wall dynamics, this coupling comprises an amplitude and frequency modulation of the small-scale fluctuations by the large-scale motions. In this work we use wavelet analysis to examine amplitude and frequency modulation. Albeit the wavelet-based approach for amplitude modulation condenses to analyses presented in earlier studies, the strength of the approach becomes evident from a convenient extension of the technique to extract local instantaneous frequency modulation. While discrete techniques were employed previously, an application of a continuous approach results in inherent advantages when phase lags between the large- and small-scale fluctuations in terms of amplitude and frequency modulation are investigated

Effectively visualizing multi-valued flow data using color and texture

    No full text
In this paper we offer several new insights and techniques for effectively using color and texture to simultaneously convey information about multiple 2D scalar and vector distributions, in a way that facilitates allowing each distribution to be understood both individually and in the context of one or more of the other distributions. Specifically, we introduce the concepts of: color weaving for simultaneously representing information about multiple co-located color encoded distributions; and texture stitching for achieving more spatially accurate multi-frequency line integral convolution representations of combined scalar and vector distributions. The target application for our research is the definition, detection and visualization of regions of interest in a turbulent boundary layer flow at moderate Reynolds number. In this work, we examine and analyze streamwise-spanwise planes of three-component velocity vectors with the goal of identifying and characterizing spatially organized packets of hairpin vortices

Coherent structures in flow over hydraulic engineering surfaces

abstract: Wall-bounded turbulence manifests itself in a broad range of applications, not least of which in hydraulic systems. Here we briefly review the significant advances over the past few decades in the fundamental study of wall turbulence over smooth and rough surfaces, with an emphasis on coherent structures and their role at high Reynolds numbers. We attempt to relate these findings to parallel efforts in the hydraulic engineering community and discuss the implications of coherent structures in important hydraulic phenomena. This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published as Ronald J. The influence of subgrid-scale modelling on the performance of a new non-equilibrium wall-model for large-eddy simulation

    No full text
The computational cost of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) rapidly becomes prohibitive with increasing Reynolds number. Wall-modelled LES attempts to significantly reduce the computational cost of simulating wall-bounded turbulent flows by modelling the effect of the near-wall small-scale motions, rather than fully or partially resolving them. The present study concentrates on a new wall-model that is able to predict fluctuating wall-shear stress given a large-scale velocity input. The velocity input for the model is affected by the choice of subgrid-scale (SGS) model. Therefore, this study also focusses on the impact of the SGS-model on the distribution of quantities at the wall. Results show that the new wall-model is able to resolve more of the wall shear-stress variance than a standard wall-model; and that the SGS-model affects the distribution of fluctuations of both wall-shear stress and wall-pressure

An accessory protease inhibitor to increase the yield and quality of a tumour-targeting mAb in nicotiana benthamiana leaves

The overall quality of recombinant IgG antibodies in plants is dramatically compromised by host endogenous proteases. Different approaches have been developed to reduce the impact of endogenous proteolysis on IgGs, notably involving site-directed mutagenesis to eliminate protease-susceptible sites or the in situ mitigation of host protease activities to minimize antibody processing in the cell secretory pathway. We here characterized the degradation profile of H10, a human tumour-targeting monoclonal IgG, in leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana also expressing the human serine protease inhibitor α1 -antichymotrypsin or the cysteine protease inhibitor tomato cystatin SlCYS8. Leaf extracts revealed consistent fragmentation patterns for the recombinant antibody regardless of leaf age and a strong protective effect of SlCYS8 in specific regions of the heavy chain domains. As shown using an antigen-binding ELISA and LC-MS/MS analysis of antibody fragments, SlCYS8 had positive effects on both the amount of fully-assembled antibody purified from leaf tissue and the stability of biologically active antibody fragments containing the heavy chain Fc domain. Our data confirm the potential of Cys protease inhibitors as convenient antibody-stabilizing expression partners to increase the quality of therapeutic antibodies in plant protein biofactories. © 2016 Jutras et al. Streamwise turbulence intensity formulation for flat-plate boundary layers

    No full text
This is a publishers PDF of an article published in Physics of Fluids 2003, published by American Institute of Physics. This version is reproduced under the journals author licence agreement. http://pof.aip.org/A similarity formulation is proposed to describe the streamwise turbulence intensity across the entire smooth-wall zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer. The formulation is an extension of the Marusic, Uddin, and Perry [Phys. Fluids 9, 3718 (1997)] formulation that was restricted to the outer region of the boundary layer, including the logarithmic region. The new formulation is found to agree very well with experimental data over a large range of Reynolds numbers varying from laboratory to atmospheric flows. The formulation is founded on physical arguments based on the attached eddy hypothesis, and suggests that the boundary layer changes significantly with Reynolds number, with an outer flow influence felt all the way down to the viscous sublayer. The formulation may also be used to explain why the empirical mixed scaling of DeGraaff and Eaton [J. Fluid Mech. 422, 319 (2000)] appears to work
