Rumer Godden:International and Intermodern Storyteller
From 1929 to 1997, Rumer Godden published more than 60 books, including novels, biographies, children's books, and poetry; this is the first collection devoted to this important transnational writer. Focusing on Godden's writing from the 1930s onward, the contributors uncover the breadth and variety of the literary landscape on display in works such as Black Narcissus, The Lady and the Unicorn, A Fugue in Time, and The River. Often drawing on her own experiences living in India and Britain, Godden establishes a diverse narrative topography that allows her to engage with issues related to her own uncertain position as an author representing such nomadic Others as gypsies, or taking up the displacements brought about by international conflict. Recognizing that studies of the transnational must consider the condition of enforced and elected exile within the changing political and cultural borders of postcolonial nations, the contributors position Godden with respect to different and overlapping fields of inquiry: modern literary history; colonial, postcolonial, and transnational studies; inter-media studies; and children's literature. Taken together, the essays in this volume demonstrate the richness and variety of Godden's writing and render the myriad ways in which Godden is an important critical presence in mid-twentieth-century fiction.</p

Phonon Scattering Times in a Molecular Crystal Below 10K Determined by Optically Detected Acoustic Paramagnetic Resonance
A combination of optically detected magnetic and acoustical paramagnetic resonance has been used to determine the phonon scattering time of microwave-frequency phonons in a molecular crystal in the 2- to 7-K temperature range. In contrast to higher-temperature behavior, it is found that the phonon scattering time in the molecular-crystal sample follows the I.andau-Rumer law %e suggest that a good estimate of the phonon scattering time for microwave-frequency phonons in this temperature range is rr = (pv /y v T ) X 10 for any molecular crystal if boundary and inelastic defect scattering can be neglected

Piezoelectric-Layered Structures Based on Synthetic Diamond
Results of theoretical, modeling, and experimental investigation of microwave acoustic
properties of piezoelectric layered structure “Me1/AlN/Me2/(100) diamond” have been
presented within a wide frequency band 0.5–10 GHz. The highest among known
material quality parameter Q × f ~ 10^14 Hz for the IIa type synthetic diamond at
operational frequency ~10 GHz has been found. Conditions of UHF excitation and
propagation of the bulk, surface, and Lamb plate acoustic waves have been established
and studied experimentally. Frequency dependencies of the impedance and quality
factor have been studied to obtain a number of piezoelectric layered structure
parameters as electromechanical coupling coefficient, equivalent circuit parameters, etc.
Results of 2D finite element modeling of a given piezoelectric layered structure have
been compared with the experimental ones obtained for the real high-overtone bulk
acoustic resonator. An origin of high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator’s spurious
resonant peaks has been studied. Results on UHF acoustic attenuation of IIa-type
synthetic single crystalline diamond have been presented and discussed in terms of
Akhiezer and Landau–Rumer mechanisms of phonon–phonon interaction. Identification
and classification of Lamb waves belonging to several branches as well as dispersive
curves of phase velocities have been executed. Necessity of introducing a more correct
Lamb-mode classification has been recognized

Central Asia: Problems of External Debt and Its Sustainability
This paper is devoted to one of the most urgent problems of Central Asian economies in transition, i.e. external debt and its sustainability within systemic transformation process. On the basis of vast current statistical data the problems of structure and dynamics of external debt are analysed and some policy recommendations are made. Basic transfer equations and two-gap models are used as tools to measure external debt. The paper attempts to find solutions considering both specific causes of the external debt itself and debt problems via related balance of payments issues. In conlcusion, it emphasized the necessity to deal with external debt through policies in all spheres of debt management, foreign trade and the flow of international financial resources implemented simultaneously. It proves that only the cumulative effect of all measures will allow the rather complex and persistent character of external debt to be overcome.Central Asian Independent States, External Debt, Indebtedness Indicators, Debt Sustainability
