Figurative or figure of speech is the way someone conveys something figuratively. Figurative language is a picture of the author or speaker in describing something meaning through unusual comparisons, in order to attract attention, and make something clearer. This technique is used with interesting figurative language. This indirect meaning is referred to as a figure of speech, which is a language deviation in spelling, word formation, sentence construction, or the application of a meaning. We often find this kind of phenomenon in Arabic poetry which has a double meaning or even deviates from the original meaning and then requires another meaning. This is because the form or sentence structure used by the author has a different meaning than what we imagine. Therefore, special knowledge is needed to understand these Arabic poems, one of which is understanding figurative language. By knowing the various figurative languages, Arabic learners can understand how to interpret Arabic poetry well. The analytical method used is descriptive, the form of analysis used is qualitative because the data in this analysis is in the form of lyric quotes, stanzas or lines of Arabic poetry that do not prioritize numbers. In this article, the writer tries to analyze some Arabic poetry using figurative language theory. The poetry used belongs to Umruu al-Qais

The Effect of Nozzle Length and Exhaust Plume on Transonic and Supersonic Axisymmetric Base Flows: An Experimental Study

    No full text
A combined PIV and Schlieren measurements have been carried out in the transonic-supersonic wind tunnel (TST-27) to investigate the effect of exhaust plume and the variation in nozzle length on the flow topology and mean pressure distribution on the wake of axisymmetric backward facing step model at freestream Mach numbers of 0.76 and 2.20, respectively. Four different nozzle length configurations with and without the presence of a supersonic exhaust plume have been tested. Testing with different nozzle length configuration resulted in flow cases where the shear layer reattachment occurred on the nozzle (solid reattachment), on the flow downstream of the nozzle (fluidic reattachment), and intermittently on the nozzle and on the flow (hybrid reattachment). A qualitative identification of the effect of exhaust plume and the variation in nozzle length on the flow topology on the wake of axisymmetric backward facing step model, at the above mentioned conditions, is successfully described by means of Schlieren visualization. The topological flow features for the subsonic and supersonic flow cases has been identified (i.e shock waves, Prandtl-Meyer expansion fan, boundary layer, separated shear layer, recompression and plume shocks). On the other hand, a quantitative identification of the effect of exhaust plume and the variation in nozzle length on the flow topology and mean pressure distribution on the wake of axisymmetric backward facing step model, at the above mentioned conditions, is successfully done by means of planar PIV. The planar PIV measurements in the wake region of the model provided detailed information of the mean flow field properties (i.e mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds stresses and reverse flow). Using these mean flow field properties data, the mean pressure distribution is reconstructed based on the momentum equation. It has been shown that an increase in nozzle length and the presence of an exhaust plume caused an increase in mean reattachment length at freestream Mach number of 2.20, while no significant change in mean reattachment length was noticed at freestream Mach number of 0.76. Significantly higher turbulent kinetic energy levels have been observed for L/D = 1.8 cases where solid reattachment occurred, at freestream Mach number of 2.20. In contrast to supersonic flow cases, the flow cases at freestream Mach number of 0.76 showed a significantly lower turbulent kinetic energy levels. Comparisons of flow cases with a long nozzle without a plume and flow cases with a short nozzle but with a plume suggest that the presence of the plume cannot accurately be modeled by replacing the plume with a solid geometry. From the pressure results it is observed that the location of the low-pressure region downstream of the base remained unchanged for different flow cases with and without exhaust plume and for different nozzle lengths. Furthermore, it has been shown that an increase in nozzle length leads to higher local pressure at the nozzle exit and hence results in a less under-expanded for the supersonic flow cases or more over-expanded plume for the subsonic cases.Aerospace Engineerin

3D Engineered Glioblastoma Microenvironments for Proton Beam Irradiation

    No full text
Glioblastoma (GBM) is a devastating cancer of the brain with an extremely poor prognosis. Novel in-vitro methods for the assessment of cancer response to drugs and radiation are being developed. Compared to two-dimensional cell culture, three-dimensional cellular microenvironments provide a model closer to the in-vivo situation. In the context of cancer treatment, while X-Ray radiotherapy and chemotherapy remain the current standard, Proton beam therapy is an alternative with a compelling biological and medical rationale. It has been shown to reduce the damage to healthy tissue with superior targeting abilities. In this report, a novel 3D engineered scaffold is designed and fabricated by two-photon polymerization (2PP). 2PP provides high-resolution and reproducible scaffolds that are used to compare the response of cultured U251 cell line to Proton Beam irradiation. The cells are cultured on two- and three-dimensional scaffolds simultaneously for response comparison. Gamma-H2A.X is the marker used to identify the damage induced in the cells by the proton beams. The results show a higher DNA double-strand breakage in 2D cells as compared to those cultured in 3D. Differences in morphologies and proliferation are also observed. The discrepancy in proton radiation response could indicate a difference in the radioresistance of the cells or a difference in the rate of repair kinetics between 2D and 3D cells. Thus, these biomimetic engineered 3D scaffolds can be used to routinely assess the effects of proton therapy on tridimensional GBM cell networks. These scaffolds have also been proved to be effective with evaluation methods such as immunofluorescence and scanning electron microscopy.Mechanical Engineering | Micro and Nano Engineerin

Title Garbage Collection in Software Performance Engineering Author Peter Libič [email protected] Advisor doc. Ing. Petr Tůma, Dr. [email protected] Department Department of Distributed and Dependable Systems Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Charles University Malostranské nám. 25, 118 00 Prague, Czech Republic Abstract The increasing popularity of languages with automatic memory management makes the garbage collector (GC) performance key to effective application execution. Unfortunately, performance behavior of contemporary GC is not well understood by the application developers and often ignored by the per- formance model designers. In this thesis, we (1) evaluate nature of GC overhead with respect to its effect on accuracy of performance models. We assess the possibility to model GC overhead as a black-box and identify workload characteristics that contribute to GC performance. Then we (2) design an analytical model of one-generation collector and a simulation model of both one-generation and two-generation collectors. These models rely on application characteristics. We evaluate the accuracy of such models and perform an analysis of their sensitivity to the inputs. Using the model we expose the gap between under- standing the GC overhead based on knowing the algorithm..

Unwelcome? English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in the Arabian Gulf

    No full text
The Qatari college EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom is revisited in the author’s second action research study conducted in the small Arabian Gulf country. The literature review allowed the author to gather themes that lead to this groundbreaking inquiry of the residual effects resulting from educational language reforms in the country. Due to the beginning stages of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in Qatar, to the author’s knowledge, no such research has taken place until now. The qualitative data collection method involved 11 focus group participants from the researcher’s advanced-intermediate IEP (Intensive English Program) class that underwent a semi-structured interview. Results determine that, if given the choice, students would rather receive instruction in the Arabic medium instead of English to pursue undergraduate studies. The author offers additional research questions and recommendations in understanding the student perspective and why the EMI reforms have not been successful.</jats:p

Computers are now an integral part of engineering helping us achieve solutions to evermore complex tasks. This study aims to better understand computer modeling and analysis using the necessary software for Fluid Dynamics and computer modeling. The study will also help better understand the current designs of automotives andfluid mechanics in general. There are many ways that performance of a carcan be measured, by wind-tunnel testing, longer empirical studies or CFD but most of these concentrate on optimization of external fluid-flow. This study sees the relationship between airflow under and over the hood. At the end of this report, the author will conclude on the analysis and research that has been done to look at the approach of the using CFD in order to study and understand fluid flow through different circumstances and for computer modeling. Hence, better understand today's technological advances
