No full textEste artículo analiza la novela Author, Author (2004) de David Lodge como ejemplo de bioficción neo-victoriana centrada en una celebridad, en este caso concreto, Henry James. El género forma parte del renacimiento Victoriano actual que afecta a los estudios culturales en su conjunto. Mi argumento central es que la novela de Lodge constituye una respuesta a las ansiedades culturales actuales, en particular a las que se refieren a la crisis identitaria y autoría literaria, así como a la pérdida del aura artística de Walter Benjamin, sublimándolas a través de los traumas de finales del siglo XIX. La elección de James, como demuestra el artículo, no es casual. Es el último representante de un mundo perdido en el que el aura aún tenía un espacio; el ser humano en crisis y traumatizado porque no encaja en un status quo nuevo.This paper delves into David Lodge’s Author, Author (2004) as an example of neo-Victorian celebrity biofiction, more concretely on Henry James. The genre belongs to the wave of Victorian revival in current literature which also affects cultural studies in general. My main contention is that Lodge’s novel responds to current cultural anxieties, particularly the crisis of identity and authorship and the end of Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura, by sublimating them into late-nineteenth-century traumata. The choice of James is, the article argues, not casual. He represents the redeeming figure of a lost auratic world; the human in crisis, traumatized because he does not fit in the new status quo
Ediciones y repercusiones de la obra médica de Celso en el Renacimiento
No full textProducción CientíficaDe medicina by Celsus, practically disappeared during the Middle Ages, was rediscovered, among other classical texts, between the 15th and the 16th Centuries. Due to the searching or maybe just by chance, the book was copied, lost, found, bought and sold until the editio princeps was published by Bartolomeo Fonzio in Florence in 1478. It is worth telling this adventure because it didn’t end in the 16th Century but lasted from 1426, when the main manuscripts were found, to 1973.
In fact, the spreading of the text and the enthusiasm for the printings had begun much sooner and they didn’t stop until the 17th Century, even later. This paper analyses the Renaissance editions and focuses on the paratextual elements of the very first printings (especially titles, prologues, indexes, dedications and colophons) in order to provide relevant information about the reception of the book, the target audience and the context of the time when they were published. Details about the entry of Celsus as a rising author into the competitive 16th Century publishing industry are also includedTras permanecer prácticamente desaparecido durante el Medievo, el De medicina de Celso fue uno de los textos redescubiertos, junto a otros clásicos, entre los siglos XIV y XV. Fruto de la búsqueda o del azar, el libro se copia, se pierde, se reencuentra, se compra y se vende, hasta que en 1478 aparece la editio princeps florentina a cargo de Bartolomeo Fonzio. Una aventura digna de ser contada, y que no terminó en siglo XVI, pues el arco temporal que abarca el hallazgo de sus principales testimonios manuscritos se inicia en 1426 y termina en 1973.
La difusión de la obra y el entusiasmo por ella habían comenzado mucho antes y no cesaron hasta bien entrado el siglo XVII y aun después. En estas páginas recorremos las ediciones renacentistas y nos centramos en el estudio de los elementos paratextuales de sus primeros impresos (títulos, prólogos, índices, dedicatorias y colofones, fundamentalmente) en busca de informaciones de índole muy diversa acerca de la receptio del texto, del público destinatario y del contexto en que se producen, así como una serie de datos sobre la entrada de Celso, como valor en alza, en el competitivo mercado editorial del siglo XVI.Este trabajo forma parte del proyecto de investigación: AMATO LUSITANO Y SU TIEMPO: LITERATURA MÉDICA, PACIENTES Y ENFERMEDADES EN EL SIGLO XVI financiado por Fondos Feder y la Junta de Castilla y León VA222P2

No full textCon respecto a la centuria precedente, el libro del siglo XVII fue ilustrado con menor asiduidad y profusión. Sin embargo, lejos de restar interés al tema, esta escasez pone de relieve aquellas obras que contenían imágenes, así como su significado, la función que cumplían dentro del libro, su relación con el texto, su mérito técnico, su valor artístico y, por supuesto, la prestancia de la obra, de su autor y de su patrocinador. A este grupo escogido pertenecen algunas de las primeras ediciones de las obras escritas por y sobre Santa Teresa de Jesús, libros que no sólo contienen estampas, sino que éstas son en buena medida calcográficas y, desde un punto de vista iconográfico, representativas del libro ilustrado barroco.Seventeenth-century books were not illustrated with such assiduity and in such numbers as in the previous century. However, their scarcity, far from reducing our interest in the subject, highlights those works which contained images, as well as their significance, the function which they fulfilled within the book, their relationship with the text, their technical worth, their artistic value and, of course, the excellence of the work, their author and their commissioner. Some of the first editions of the works written by and about Saint Teresa of Ávila, belong to this chosen group, books which not only contain illustrations but which are also, to a large extent, calcographical and, from an iconographical point of view, representative of illustrated Baroque books

The blind spots of secularization
No full textAccording to several international surveys Spain is among the western countries with the most negative views of Jews. While quantitative data on the topic accumulates, there is a significant lack of interpretative approaches that might explain the particular Spanish case. This paper presents the background, methodology and major results of a discussion group-based study on antisemitism, which was conducted in Spain in the autumn of 2009. The study identifies and locates in different socio-economic and ideological milieus the range of stereotypical discourses on Jews, Judaism and the Arab–Israeli conflict in Spain. Analysis of the group meetings shows that, despite growing secularization in Spanish society, the central explanatory variable for persisting and resurging antisemitism in this country is still religion in a broad cultural sense.N
