Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A polarisation maintaining fibre Bragg grating interrogation system for multi- axis strain sensing
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) written into polarisation maintaining (PM) fibres
have been employed for multi-axis strain and temperature sensing. In this paper
we report the development of a FBG interrogation system that is capable of
detecting independently the two orthogonally polarised signals reflected from a
PM FBG. The interrogation system imposes no limitation on the measurable strain
range. This relaxes the requirements on the bandwidth of the grating spectrum,
allowing the use of a shorter PM FBG (larger bandwidth) for sensing applications
where a higher spatial resolution is required. In particular, this system is
useful in the cases where the spectra of the reflected polarised signals are
broadened or split, resulting from strain-induced structural changes of the PM
fibre, or caused by the application of a non-uniform strain on the FBG
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Distal myopathy secondary to a mutation in myotilin
Distal myopathies are inherited primary muscle and may be caused by defects in structural components of the sarcomere. We present a family with a distal myopathy secondary to a mutation in myotilin. A 70-year-old male reported progressive difficulty walking from his early 50s when he developed a tendency for his feet to flap followed by increasing problems rising from a chair. A younger sister had identical symptoms and their father had an abnormal gait from his fifth decade. On examination, he had a lordotic gait and a distal pattern of weakness in his lower limbs. Creatine kinase was marginally raised and an MRI of his legs showed a distinctive pattern of fatty replacement of muscle. Muscle biopsy revealed non-selective fibre atrophy and numerous eosinophilic inclusions surrounded by asophilic granules. Molecular genetic analysis of titan was normal but a myotilin S60C missense mutation was found in both siblings. Myotilin is a 57 kDa Z-disc component that interacts with alpha-actinin, filamin-C, calsarcin and actin which controls sarcomere assembly. Seven mutations have been reported which give rise to two phenotypes—either LGMD1A or a distal myofibrillar myopathy. This family is only the second to be reported with this particular mutation
Prevalensi Penyakit Infeksi Menular Lewat Transfusi Darah (IMLTD) Darah Donor di UDD PMI Kota Surabaya Tahun 2018-2022
Transmission of infectious diseases is one of the risks in the blood transfusion process. The Blood Donor Unit (UDD), as a blood provider institution, must ensure that blood products distributed in the community are safe, especially from infectious diseases that can be transmitted through blood transfusion (TTI). UDD PMI Surabaya is a first-class UDD and CPOB-certified facility that serves blood needs not only in East Java but also as a reference for the Eastern Indonesia region. The location of UDD is in a big city, the number of donors is quite large, the coverage of the area of origin of donors and the target users of blood products is quite broad, and a complete screening test method are interesting factors to study regarding the prevalence of TTI disease. This study aims to determine the prevalence of infectious diseases transmitted through blood transfusion among blood donors in UDD PMI Surabaya in 2018–2022, as well as the sociodemographic characteristics of reactive donors. This research is a retrospective, descriptive study. Data for 2018–2022 comes from the in UDD PMI Surabaya database with total number of 639580 blood donors. The research results show that hepatitis B is a TTI disease with the highest prevalence compared to other TTI diseases. Most donors come from the 17–30 year age group who have reactive TTI test results, and this decreases with increasing age except for hepatitis B. Reactive donors are more dominated by women than men, except for HIV disease
The first Italian family with tibial muscular dystrophy caused by a novel titin mutation
Tibial muscular dystrophy (TMD) or Udd myopathy is an autosomal dominant distal myopathy with late onset, at first described in the Finnish population. We report here the first Italian cases of TTN mutated titinopathy. The proband, a 60 year-old female, had the first muscular signs at the age of 59 years, with difficulty in walking and right foot drop. Muscle imaging showed selective fatty degenerative change in the anterior compartment of leg muscles. Her 67 year-old brother, started to show muscle weakness, pain at lower limbs and hypertrophy of calf muscles at the age of 66 years. Their mother began to show foot drop and impaired walking from the age of 60 years. Other relatives are reported to be affected in a similar way. Because the phenotype appeared compatible with TMD, we analyzed the TTN gene in the DNA of the proband and we identified a heterozygous mutation 293326A>C. This mutation is also present in the brother and in the other affected individuals of the same family. The mutation predicts a His33378Pro change located next to the previously known Belgian TMD mutation. The mutation was not found in 100 Italian control DNA samples. Then, since the introduction of a proline in the last domain of titin was previously known to cause TMD in French families, we can conclude that this missense mutation is the obvious pathogenetic mutation in the affected patients. No other disease causing mutations in the TTN gene have so far been reported in the Italian population
