    The spread of herbicide resistance in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.) poses a serious threat to crop production in the southern United States. A thorough knowledge of the biology of barnyardgrass is fundamental for designing effective resistance-management programmes. In the present study, seed production of barnyardgrass in response to time of emergence was investigated in cotton and rice, respectively, in Fayetteville and Rohwer, Arkansas, over a 2-year period (2008–09). Barnyardgrass seed production was greater when seedlings emerged with the crop, but some seed production was observed even if seedlings emerged several weeks after crop emergence. Moreover, barnyardgrass seed production was highly variable across environments. When emerging with the crop (0 weeks after crop emergence (WAE)), barnyardgrass produced c. 35 500 and 16 500 seeds/plant in cotton, and c. 39 000 and 2900 seeds/plant in rice, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Seed production was observed when seedlings emerged up to 5 WAE (2008) or 7 WAE (2009) in cotton and up to 5 WAE (2008, 2009) in rice; corresponding seed production was c. 2500 and 1500 seeds/plant in cotton, and c. 14 700 and 110 seeds/plant in rice, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The results suggest that cultural approaches that delay the emergence of barnyardgrass or approaches that make the associated crop more competitive will be useful in integrated management programmes. In the context of herbicide resistance management, it may be valuable to prevent seed return to the seedbank, irrespective of cohorts.     Ispitivanje alelopatskih odnosa različitih biljnih ekstrakata na korovske vrste dobija sve veći značaj. Dobijeni rezultati se mogu koristiti za dalja istraživanja i dobijanje novih herbicidnih preparata. Utvrđeni alelopatski odnosi mogu biti značajni i za organizovanje plodoreda ili za zelenišno đubrenje- zaoravanjem useva sa izraženim alelopatskim dejstvom. Cilj istraživanja je bio da se utvrdi alelopatsko dejstvo ekstrakta Cannabis sativa L. (industrijske konoplje) na Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. (proso korovsko), praćenjem aktivnosti gvajakol peroksidaze u listovima tretiranih biljaka. Rezultati ogleda su ukazali da su tretirane biljke E. crus-galli pretrpele stres nakon tretmana ekstraktom. Ekstrakt C. sativa dobijen procesom klasične ekstrakcije primenjen je u koncentracijama od 100%, 50%, 25% i 10%. Za kontrolnu varijantu su korišćene netretirane biljke. Biljke E. crus-galli su tretirane u početnim fazama rasta u poljskim uslovima

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition of impaired homeostasis of blood thiols characterized by a severe hyperhomocysteinemia (HH) and abnormal expression of the red blood cell glutathione (GSH)-consuming enzyme GSH S-transferase (eGST) (Galli et al., Clin Chem 1999). The correlation between plasma Hcy and eGST recently identified by our group (Dessì et al., Amino Acids 2012) suggests a role of this detoxifying enzyme in the impaired thiol status of CKD treated with hemodialysis therapy (HD).     An anatomical study of pneumatized crista galli

    The literature data on the incidence of pneumatization of the crista galli based on patients' computed tomography (CT) scans ranges from 3 to 37.5%. This study investigated for the first time the incidence of crista galli pneumatization based on CT scans of human skulls. The study examined 102 randomly selected human skulls (>= 20 years of age; 76 males, 26 females). Skulls were scanned in a fixed position using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with a field of view of 145 x 130 mm and an isotropic voxel size of 0.25 mm. The scans were recorded in Digital Images and Communications in Medicine format. The CBCT images were analyzed using OnDemand3DTM software. A 2-mm contiguous slice thickness was used in the axial and coronal planes. The width, length, and height (cranial-caudal dimension) of the pneumatized space within the crista galli were measured. The crista galli was found to be pneumatized in even 68 (66.6%) of the 102 skulls. Two types of pneumatized crista galli (PCG) were identified: PCG alone (surrounded by bony walls) and PCG + spongiosis (surrounded by spongy bone). Of the 68 pneumatized skulls, 31 were PCG alone (45.58%) and 37 were PCG + spongiosis (54.42%). The pneumatized regions had a width of 0.9-6.6 mm, length of 2.8-12.9 mm, and height of 3.6-17.1 mm. No statistically significant differences have been found regarding the sex and age. Regarding the proportions of pneumatization, the three types of crista galli have been determined resulting in new, practical classification: type S (small), type M (moderate), and type L (large). The crista galli is not always a compact bone; in some cases, it is filled with spongy bone or pneumatized. In respect of proportions of pneumatization, there are three types of pneumatized crista galli: small, moderate, and large. Pneumatized crista galli can play an important role in clinical work, both as an inflamed sinus or other pathologies (sinusitis cristae galli, mucocoelae) or as a morphologic barrier in neurosurgical approaches to some tumors of the anterior skull base

    Dowling-Degos Disease: Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) is an unusual pigmentary disorder usually caused by mutations in keratin 5. A 44-year-old woman in good general health presented due to the recent appearance of numerous pigmented macules on her axillary and anogenital skin. A biopsy showed lacy, finger-like epidermal extensions into the dermis which were heavily pigmented and associated with tiny cysts or dilated follicles. We view DDD as part of a spectrum of disorders which are morphologically related but vary in location and time of expression.
