    M. N. Srinivas, the well known sociologist is widely recognised as architect of modern Indian sociology and social anthropology. His publications have been analysed by year, domain, authorship pattern, channels of communication used. Keywords, etc. The results indicate that the papers published by him are of a nature that qualify him to be a 'role model' for the younger generations to emulate. By the end of 1995, Srinivas had to his credit 144 papers which, included 33 broad papers in sociology and anthropology; 18 papers in social change; 28 papers in village studies; 12 papers on religion; 17 papers on caste and 36 papers of general popular interest. The periods 1958-61 and 1974-77, when Srinivas was 38-41 and 58-61 years old. were his most productive periods with highest publication activity

Variants of spectral Tur\'an theorems and eigenvectors of graphs

In 2002, Nikiforov proved that for an nn-vertex graph GG with clique number ω\omega and edge number mm, the spectral radius λ(G)\lambda(G) satisfies λ(G)2(11/ω)m\lambda (G) \leq \sqrt{2(1 - 1/\omega) m}, which confirmed a conjecture implicitly suggested by Edwards and Elphick. In this paper, we prove a local version of spectral Tur\'an inequality, which states that λ2(G)2eE(G)c(e)1c(e)\lambda^2(G)\leq 2\sum_{e\in E(G)}\frac{c(e)-1}{c(e)}, where c(e)c(e) is the order of the largest clique containing the edge ee in GG. We also characterize the extremal graphs. We prove that our theorem implies Nikiforov's theorem and give an example to show that the difference of Nikiforov's bound and ours is Ω(m)\Omega (\sqrt{m}) for some cases. Additionally, we establish a spectral counterpart to Ore's problem (1962) which asks for the maximum size of an nn-vertex graph such that its complement is connected and does not contain FF as a subgraph. Our result leads to a new spectral Tur\'an inequality applicable to graphs with connected complements. Finally, we disprove a conjecture of Gregory, asserting that for a connected nn-vertex graph GG with chromatic number k2k\geq 2 and an independent set SS, we have vSxv212k22(k2)2+4(k1)(nk+1), \sum_{v\in S} x_v^2 \leq \frac{1}{2} - \frac{k-2}{2\sqrt{(k-2)^2 + 4(k-1)(n-k+1)}}, where xvx_v is the component of the Perron vector of GG with respect to the vertex vv. A modified version of Gregory's conjecture is proposed.Comment: 20 pages. This is a new version of the previous paper titled "A local version of spectral Tur\'an theorem". In this version, we add more results, including a variant of spectral Tur\'an theorem and a disproof of a conjecture of Gregor

THE IMPACT OF RE-TUR ON CLINICAL OUTCOMES IN A LARGE COHORT OF T1G3 PATIENTS TREATED WITH BCG.

Scopo del lavoro Re-TUR is strongly advocated for T1G3, because of the high incidence residual disease and mainly the risk of substaging. Its real clinical value remains to be determined and the clinical factors that may influence the decision. Some authors suggest that when muscle is present in the specimen, re-TUR may be avoided. To evaluate if the presence of muscle or not at the first TUR in T1G3 bladder cancer makes a difference in recurrence, progression and cancer specific survival after re-TUR. Materiali e metodi In a large retrospective cohort of 2530 primary T1G3 initially treated with BCG, 953 (37.7%) had a re-TUR. According to the presence or not of muscle in the specimen of primary TUR, patients were divided in 4 groups: group 1 (no muscle, no re-TUR), group 2 (no muscle, re-TUR), group 3 (muscle, no re-TUR) and group 4 (muscle, re-TUR). Clinical outcomes were compared across the 4 groups. Risultati Table 1 shows the distribution of prognostic factors and clinical outcomes across the 4 groups. Large tumours and multifocal tumours were more likely to have received a re-TUR independent of whether or not the primary specimen contained muscle. Re-TUR had a significant impact on progression, cancer specific (CSS) and overall survival (OS) only when muscle was not present in the primary specimen. When adjusting for the most important prognostic factors including age, tumour size and the presence of CIS, re-TUR in the absence of muscle maintained a positive impact on time to progression (HR 0.44, p=0.048), CSS (HR 0.31; p=0.067), and OS (HR 0.50; p=0.060) and showed a borderline effect on time to first recurrence (HR 0.69; p=0.100). Re-TUR in presence of muscle in the primary specimen did not improve the outcome for any of the endpoints after adjusting for prognostic factors. Discussione Even if re TUR is recommended in high risk tumors, it can delay the intravescial therapy. When muscle is present in TUR specimen the risk of substaging or residual tumor should be balanced with the need of keep on with adequate treatments. Conclusioni Our retrospective analysis shows that re-TUR may not be mandatory in T1G3 patients when muscle is present in the specimen of the primary TUR

    Combinatorial batch codes

    No full text
In this paper, we study batch codes, which were introduced by Ishai, Kushilevitz, Ostrovsky and Sahai in [4]. A batch code specifies a method to distribute a database of [n] items among [m] devices (servers) in such a way that any [k] items can be retrieved by reading at most [t] items from each of the servers. It is of interest to devise batch codes that minimize the total storage, denoted by [N] , over all [m] servers. We restrict out attention to batch codes in which every server stores a subset of the items. This is purely a combinatorial problem, so we call this kind of batch code a ''combinatorial batch code''. We only study the special case [t=1] , where, for various parameter situations, we are able to present batch codes that are optimal with respect to the storage requirement, [N] . We also study uniform codes, where every item is stored in precisely [c] of the [m] servers (such a code is said to have rate [1/c] ). Interesting new results are presented in the cases [c = 2, k-2] and [k-1] . In addition, we obtain improved existence results for arbitrary fixed [c] using the probabilistic method
