Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Short term clinical and radiological results of medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasties(uka) (oxford phase 3)
Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi Ortopedi ve Travmatoloji kliniğinde Ağustos2005-Şubat 2007 tarihleri arasında ameliyat edilip en az 6 aylık takipleri tamamlanan 22hastanın 24 dizine Oxford Unikompartmantal Diz Protezi uygulandı. Hastaların erkendönem klinik ve radyolojik sonuçları değerlendirildi.Hastaların 18'i(%82) kadın, 4'ü(%18) erkek idi. Hastaların ortalama yaşı 58(45-69) idi.Hastaların 12'sinin sol dizine, 8'inin sağ dizine, 2'sinin her iki dizine aynı seanstaunikompartmantal diz protezi ameliyatı uygulandı. Hastaların ortalama takip süresi 14.66ay(6-24 ay) idi.Hastalardan 23 tanesine anteromedial osteoartrit, 1 tanesine ise femur medial kondilosteonekrozu nedeniyle Oxford UDP yapıldı.Hastaların ortalama vucut kitle indeksi 27.76(21.22-39.79) olarak bulunmuştur.Hospital for Special Surgery Skoru'na göre yapılan değerlendirmede diz skoru, ameliyatöncesi dönemde ortalama 56.2(35-77) idi. Ameliyat sonrası dönemde ise ortalama 90.4(72-100) olarak bulundu. Hastaların 17'sinde(%70.8) mükemmel, 7'sinde(%29.2) ise iyi sonuçelde edildi.Oxford Diz Skoru'na göre yapılan değerlendirmede diz skoru, ameliyat öncesi dönemdeortalama 12.33(5-24) idi. Ameliyat sonrası dönemde ise ortalama 40.25(23-48) olarakbulundu.Diz Cemiyeti Skorlamasına göre yapılan değerlendirmede hastaların ameliyat öncesiortalama diz skoru 48.4(41-60) idi. Ameliyat sonrası dönemde ise ortalama 96.3(81-100)olarak bulundu. Hastaların 22'sinde(%91.66) mükemmel, 2'sinde(%8.33) iyi sonuç eldeedildi. Hastaların Diz Cemiyeti Skorlaması fonksiyonel skoru, ameliyat öncesi dönemdeortalama 42.5(0-70) idi. Ameliyat sonrası dönemde ise ortalama 81.2(45-100) olarakbulundu.Radyolojik değerlendirmede Oxford değerlendirme kriterleri kullanılmıştır. En fazlahata femoral komponentin Medial/Lateral yerleştirilmesi sırasında ortaya çıktı. Hiçbirhastada radyolojik olarak gevşeme bulgusuna rastlanmadı.Eklem hareket açıklığı ameliyat öncesi dönemde ortalama 120.5(80-140) idi.Ameliyat sonrası dönemde ise ortalama 124.5(90-140) olarak bulundu.Hastaların 4'ünde insert dislokasyonu, 2'sinde erken yüzeyel enfeksiyon ve 1'inde isesinovit ve inatçı ağrı meydana geldi. Hastalardan 4'ü total diz protezine revize edildi.Sonuç olarak, unikompartmantal diz protezi medial kompartman gonartrozunda düşükmorbidite, minimal kemik ve yumuşak doku rezeksiyonu, yüksek hasta memnuniyeti ve enazından mevcut hareket açıklığını koruyabilmesi gibi önemli avantajlara sahiptir. Fakatcerrahi teknik hassasiyetleri nedeniyle, öğrenme eğrisi döneminde insert dislokasyonu gibikomplikasyonlarla göreceli olarak sık karşılaşılabilmektedir. Tecrübe arttıkça bu tipkomplikasyonlar da minimuma inmekte ve daha iyi klinik sonuçlar elde edilmektedir.This study involved 24 unicompartmental knee arthroplasties(UKA) (Oxford Phase 3),performed in 22 patients operated between august 2005 and february 2007 and had aminimum of 6 month follow-ups, in Selçuk University Meram School of MedicineDepartment of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Short term clinical and radiological resultswere evaluated.The mean age of 18 (82%) women and 4 (18%) men was 58(45-69) years.Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty was performed in 12 left and 8 right knees andbilaterally in two patients.The follow up period was 14.66 (6-24) months on the average.The indication for UKA was anteromedial osteoarthritis in 23 and femoral medialcondylar osteonecrosis in one of the patients.The average body mass index of the patients was found to be 27.76(21.22-39.79).Hospital for Special Surgery Knee Score of the patients was 56.2(35-77) preoperativelyand 90.4(72-100) postoperatively. There were 17 excellent and 7 good results.Oxford Knee Score was 12.33(5-24) preoperatively and 40.25(23-48) postoperatively.Knee Society Score was 48.4(41-60) preoperatively, 96.3(81-100) postoperatively.There were 22 excellent and 2 good results. Knee Society functional score was 42.5(0-70)preoperatively and 81.2(45-100) postoperatively.Radiological evaluation was performed using Oxford criteria. The most frequent errorwas encountered during medial/lateral insertion of the femoral component(Table 4.1).Radiological loosening was not seen in any of the patients.The range of motion was(ROM) 120.5(80-140) preoperatively and 124.5(90-140)postoperatively.There were 4 insert dislocations, 2 early superficial infections and 1 synovitis withresistant pain.In conclusion, UKA has important advantages such as low morbidity, minimal bone andsoft tissue resection, high patient satisfaction and conserving at least the preoperativeROM. However, during the learning curve period of technical details, complications suchas insert dislocation are relatively high. Better clinical results go parallel with increasingexperience
Biomechanical comparison of dynamic hip screw, proximal femoral nail, cannulated screw, and monoaxial external fixation in the treatment of basicervical femoral neck fractures
: PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to establish relative fixation strengths of proximal femoral nail (PFN), dynamic hip screw (DHS), monolateral external fixator (EF), and cannulated screw (CS) in basicervical hip fracture model. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved four groups of implanted composite proximal femoral synthetic bones of eight specimens per group; nailing with PFN, DHS, fixation with three cannulated screws, and EF. 70 ̊ osteotomy was performed to simulate a Pauwels Type 3 basicervical fracture. Minimum preload of 100 N was applied before loading to failure. The constructs were subjected to cyclic loading with 16 ̊ to midline from 100 N to 1,000 N for 10,000 cycles at 3Hz. Axial loading was applied at 10 mm/min until failure. Failure load, failure mode, and displacement were documented. RESULTS Mean failure load was 2182.5 ± 377.9 N in PFN group, 2008.75 ± 278.4 N in DHS group, 1941.25 ± 171.6 N in EF group, and 1551.6 ± 236.2 N in CS group. Average displacement was 15.6 ± 4.5 mm, 15.5 ± 6.7 mm, 11.7 ± 1.9 mm, and 15 ± 1.7 mm, respectively. No significant difference was noted among groups for fixation strength except CS group. All CS constructs failed during cyclic loading. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that PFN, DHS and EF achieved higher fixation strengths than CS in basicervical fracture. PFN has higher failure loads and possesses biomechanical benefits for fixation of unstable basicervical fractures compared with DHS and EF.
