„[...] weil sie das alles mit dem Zeichenstift viel besser sagt.“ : childrenʾs book illustrations by female artist and author Norbertine Bresslern-Roth

    No full text
The present thesis deals with the illustrative work of the artist Norbertine Bresslern-Roth, especially focused on her children´s book illustrations. Starting with her first commission as an illustrator in 1910 up to the images for schoolbooks in the 1970ies, her comprehensive oeuvre in this context is being portrayed and positioned within the history of illustrated children´s books. Not only the child-oriented appropriations to the Nazi regime in the frame of schoolbook-illustrations are a main focus, but also the role Bresslern-Roth played as a spokeswoman for animal protection. Also, the different ways the artist engaged into the children´s worlds throughout centuries in Austria and especially Styria with her naturalistic precision are put into consideration. Illustrations in books of fairy tales as well as in storybooks and her contributions to advertising art by designing toys and candy wrappings were considered, too. Another main part of the thesis deals with her way of working and in which case her illustrations resemble or distinguish from other pieces done by the artist, while she is compared to other coeval illustrators in terms of style and visual language. An index of the publications illustrated by Bresslern-Roth are completing the thesis, also taking books into account, the artist wrote herself.vorgelegt von Anna Kohlhauser, MA BA BAAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der VerfasserinZusammenfassung in Deutsch und EnglischMasterarbeit Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz 2016 2096

Protagonist, author and jewish identity on the exile : from antiquity until modernity

    No full text
The following article presents and discusses the issue of a Jewish self-image emerging from the writings of two sons of the Chosen People – an ancient historian, Joseph Flavius, and a contemporary novelist, Philip Roth. The juxtaposed authors represent two different methods of approaching the idea of their nationhood; while Flavius is full of appraisal for it, Roth does not restrain from heavy criticism and attack on the Jewish tradition and the community’s values. Nevertheless, the authors of the article would like to argue that several similarities between these two writers and their works might be observed. Both Flavius and Roth are outlanders, living in the time of a clash between two worlds’ orders and cultures – one of their homeland, and the other alien. Both authors find themselves in a system that has little in common with the world and values they were raised in, which creates psychological tension then translated into their narratives. Though worlds and centuries apart, Flavius and Roth seem to represent two variations of the same struggle with the obstacles ever present in a Jewish life, no matter when and where it is set

Spatial navigation impairments among intellectually high-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorder: Exploring relations with theory of mind, episodic memory, and episodic future thinking

    No full text
Research suggests that spatial navigation relies on the same neural network as episodic memory, episodic future thinking, and theory of mind (ToM). Such findings have stimulated theories (e.g., the scene construction and self-projection hypotheses) concerning possible common underlying cognitive capacities. Consistent with such theories, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by concurrent impairments in episodic memory, episodic future thinking, and ToM. However, it is currently unclear whether spatial navigation is also impaired. Hence, ASD provides a test case for the scene construction and self-projection theories. The study of spatial navigation in ASD also provides a test of the extreme male brain theory of ASD, which predicts intact or superior navigation (purportedly a systemizing skill) performance among individuals with ASD. Thus, the aim of the current study was to establish whether spatial navigation in ASD is impaired, intact, or superior. Twenty-seven intellectually high-functioning adults with ASD and 28 sex-, age-, and IQ-matched neurotypical comparison adults completed the memory island virtual navigation task. Tests of episodic memory, episodic future thinking, and ToM were also completed. Participants with ASD showed significantly diminished performance on the memory island task, and performance was positively related to ToM and episodic memory, but not episodic future thinking. These results suggest that (contra the extreme male brain theory) individuals with ASD have impaired survey-based navigation skills—that is, difficulties generating cognitive maps of the environment—and adds weight to the idea that scene construction/self-projection are impaired in ASD. The theoretical and clinical implications of these results are discussed

Characterization of physical literacy in children with chronic medical conditions compared with healthy controls: A cross-sectional study

    No full text
To determine the physical literacy, defined as the capability for a physically active lifestyle, of children with medical conditions compared with healthy peers, this multicenter cross-sectional study recruited children with medical conditions from cardiology, neurology (including concussion), rheumatology, mental health, respirology, oncology, hematology, and rehabilitation (including cerebral palsy) clinics. Participants aged 8–12 years (N = 130; mean age: 10.0 ± 1.44 years; 44% female) were randomly matched to 3 healthy peers from a normative database, based on age, gender, and month of testing. Total physical literacy was assessed by the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy, a validated assessment of physical literacy measuring physical competence, daily behaviour, knowledge/understanding, and motivation/confidence. Total physical literacy mean scores (/100) did not differ (t(498) = –0.67; p = 0.44) between participants (61.0 ± 14.2) and matched healthy peers (62.0 ± 10.7). Children with medical conditions had lower mean physical competence scores (/30; –6.5 [–7.44 to –5.51]; p < 0.001) but higher mean motivation/confidence scores (/30; 2.6 [1.67 to 3.63]; p < 0.001). Mean daily behaviour and knowledge/understanding scores did not differ from matches (/30; 1.8 [0.26 to 3.33]; p = 0.02;/10; –0.04 [–0.38 to 0.30]; p = 0.81; respectively). Children with medical conditions are motivated to be physically active but demonstrate impaired movement skills and fitness, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to improve their physical competence

Quick, effective screening tasks identify children with medical conditions or disabilities needing physical literacy support

    No full text
Purpose: This study evaluated screening tasks able to identify children with medical conditions or disabilities who may benefit from physical literacy. Method: Children completed ≤20 screening tasks during their clinic visit and then the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (2nd edition) at a separate visit. Total Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy scores 4.9 hours combined with Adequacy ≤6.15 had 88% to 10% sensitivity and 53% to 56% specificity. Conclusions: Activity adequacy, alone or with screen time, most effectively identified children likely to benefit from physical literacy support. Adequacy and screen time questionnaires are suitable for clinical use. Similar results regardless of diagnosis suggest physical competence deficits are not primary determinants of active lifestyles. Research to enhance screening specificity is required

Elements of the Sacred in Patrick Roth’s Novel Corpus Christi

    No full text
Artykuł został poświęcony powieści Corpus Christi, będącej trzecią częścią literackiej trylogii Patricka Rotha, współczesnego niemieckiego pisarza, mieszkającego obecnie w Los Angeles. Wszystkie opowiadania Rotha oscylują wokół pytania o stosunek człowieka do przekazanego mu przesłania o mesjańskim Jezusie. The article discusses the novel Corpus Christi, the third part of a literary trilogy by Patrick Roth, a contemporary German writer currently living in Los Angeles. All Roth’s plots focus on human attitudes towards the received message concerning the Messianic Jesus. The author concentrates on the image of Jesus present in the psyche of contemporary people in order to show the process of cognition of spiritual matters. The analysis aims to trace in the novel both biblical references and elements which depict the mystical experience leading to an individual’s spiritual transformation. The novel Corpus Christi, whose very title has theological connotations, features scenes, characters and plot patterns derived from the Bible. they are, however, subject to the author’s innovative modifications. The text contains more references to the transcendental than depictions of the temporal. Both realities are inseparable and intersect. The sacred, which imposes the need for worship and transcends the horizon of the temporal, is shown by means of images deeply rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition
