Stratification of the Radiation Field inside a Photobioreactor during Microalgae Growth

    No full text
Light availability is a main issue in autotrophic growth of photosynthetic microorganisms. The changeofthe suspended cells concentration and that of their chlorophylls content during microalgal growth alters the optical properties of the aqueous suspension. This brings about changes in the properties of the radiation field inside the reactor. In this work,we have computed the evolution in time of the local flux density,as well asthat of the local volumetric rateof absorption of photons inside a photobioreactor by means of a Monte Carlo simulation algorithmpreviously developed. From this study we have computed two operational variables that areusefultoolsfor the analysis, performance comparison, optimization and scaling-up of photobioreactors: the average rate of photon absorption and the volumetric distribution function of photons absorption rates.Based on thesetwo variables it is possible to sistematically quantify the degree of stratification of the culture medium, which is a decisive aspect thathampers the reactor efficiency regarding the energy usage for biomass production.Fil: Heinrich, Josué Miguel. Analysis and Design of Photobioreactors for Microalgae Production I: Method and Parameters for Radiation Field Simulation

    No full text
Having capabilities for the simulation of the radiation field in suspensions of microalgae constitutes a great asset for the analysis, optimization and scaling-up of photobioreactors. In this study, a combined experimental and computational procedure is presented, specifically devised for the assessment of the oefficients of absorption and scattering, needed for the simulation of such fields. The experimental procedure consists in measuring the radiant energy transmitted through samples of suspensions of microalgae of different biomass concentrations, as well as the forward and backward scattered light. At a microscopic level, suspensions of microalgae are complex heterogeneous media and due to this complexity, in this study they are modeled as a pseudocontinuum, with centers of absorption and scattering randomly distributed throughout its volume. This model was tested on suspensions of two algal species of dissimilar cell shapes: Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus quadricauda. The Monte Carlo simulation algorithm developed in this study, when used as a supporting subroutine of a main optimization program based on a genetic algorithm, permits the assessment of the physical parameters of the radiation field model. The Monte Carlo algorithm simulates the experiments, reproducing the events that photons can undergo while they propagate through culture samples or at its physical boundaries.Fil: Heinrich, Josué Miguel. Analysis and Design of Photobioreactors for Microalgae Production II: Experimental Validation of a Radiation Field Simulator Based on a Monte Carlo Algorithm

    No full text
In previous study, we developed a methodology to assess the intrinsic optical properties governing the radiation field in algae suspensions. With these properties at our disposal, a Monte Carlo simulation program is developed and used in this study as a predictive autonomous program applied to the simulation of experiments that reproduce the common illumination conditions that are found in processes of large scale production of microalgae, especially when using open ponds such as raceway ponds. The simulation module is validated by comparing the results of experimental measurements made on artificially illuminated algal suspension with those predicted by the Monte Carlo program. This experiment deals with a situation, which resembles that of an open pond or that of a raceway pond, except for the fact that for convenience, the experimental arrangement appears as if those reactors were turned upside down. It serves the purpose of assessing as to what extent the scattering phenomena are important for the prediction of the spatial distribution of the radiant energy density. The simulation module developed can be applied to compute the local energy density inside Photobioreactors with the goal to optimize its design and their operating conditionsFil: Heinrich, Josué Miguel. No full text
From its beginning until today, Bioethics has had a significant growth in a double tightly linked aspiration: to develop as a Social Discourse and to become a knowledge discipline. This paper addresses the teaching experience of the elective subject “Bioethics”, implemented during the second semester of 2010 and the first semester of 2011, aimed at students of all undergraduate courses at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL). The purpose of the elective “Bioethics” is to contribute to reflect on the ethical considerations and human rights as unavoidable aspects of university education and professional practices. This course is the result of an activities plan that is being carried out by the Chair of Bioethics, which depends on the Academic Secretary of the UNL, within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding between UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and UNL. The authors of this paper have been responsible for the implementation of this innovative experience and attempt to account for the reflections that have accompanied the process of planning and attainment of the proposal.

From thought to fiction it wishes to express a transit in the work of Francisco Ayala, which starts with the exile in America in 1939 and continues towards the intellectual exercise of the Spanish author in this period. Representative of a liberal thought which bases itself in the rational and historicist knowledge, developed in the field of Sociology and of the politics, he acts in the Argentinian and Latin-american as a general rule environment through articles published in magazines and newspapers, theoretical books and translations. His works aims to reflect upon the historical events of the first half of the XXth century and of the pos-war period in the world context of the crisis of modernity, with the objective of understanding the social changes and to situate the role of the educated elite as far as the urgencies of the mass society are concerned, noticing how the state of the education has found itself besieged due to the advances of the images of the communication media. The exile puts Ayala facing an emergent reality and decentred from the countries where he had traveled to. This provokes a gradual deviation from the sociological activity to a predominant literary dedication. At the end of the exile, during the 70#s, and of the trips, which this period had offered him, he finally incorporates the images into the texts and, even keeping the awareness of his self, the author experiences the possibilities of being others through the fictional narrative. This process characterizes an advance over the limits of the modernist thought, engaging Francisco Ayala into a late-modern situation for experimenting, during the 50#s and the 60#s, elements credited to the post-modernism

"Voto por voto, casilla por casilla?" : Democratic consolidation, political intermediation, and the Mexican election of 2006

After he had only tightly lost the election in July 2006, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his Coalición claimed fraud and asserted that unfair conditions during the campaign had diminished his chances to win the presidency. The paper investigates this latter allegation centering on a perceived campaign of hate, unequal access to campaign resources and malicious treatment by the mass media. It further analyzes the mass media’s performance during the conflictual post electoral period until the final decision of the Federal Electoral Tribunal on September 5th, 2006. While the media’s performance during the campaign tells us about their compliance with fair media coverage mechanisms that have been implemented by electoral reforms in the 1990s, the mass media is uncontained by such measures after the election. Thus, their mode of coverage of the postelectoral conflicts allows us to “test” the mass media’s transformation to a more unbiased, social responsible “fourth estate”. Finally the paper scrutinizes whether the claims of fraud and the protests by the leftist movement resulted in lower levels of institutional trust and democratic support. The analysis of the media performance is based on data provided by the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE). Its Media Monitor encompassed more than 150 TV stations, 240 radio stations and 200 press publications. However, there is no comparable data available for the postelectoral period. Interviews with Mexican media experts, which the author has conducted during the postelectoral period, serve as empirical basis for the second part. Data on the public opinions and attitudes of Mexican citizens are taken from the 2007 Latinobarometro, the 2006 Encuesta Nacional and several polls conducted by Grupo Reforma. The results do not support López Obradors notions. Even though a strong party bias is characteristic of the Mexican media system, all findings hint at a continuity of balanced campaign coverage and fair access to mass media publicity. Coverage during the postelectoral period was more polarized, yet both sides remained at least partially open for oppositional views. The claims of fraud, mass protest mobilization and anti-institutional discourse by Lopez Obrador’s leftist movement seem not to have caused significant loss in institutional trust, support of and satisfaction with democracy, even though these levels remain quite low

This paper analyses sociologically Vilém Flussers trajectory (who was born in Prag and refugee in Brazil), his insertion in Brazilian philosophical field e retake his main works of the period, in order to explain the authors position as outsider among that intellectual scenario. To do so his biography is described since Prag (1920-1941) until the years he lived in Brazil (1941-1971). It also points out the names among the Paulista philosophical field, their works, their thought and their positions in the struggle for symbolical capital an intellectual hegemony. The author of this dissertation shows that process suffered by Flusser to become an intellectual outsider is not intrinsic to his works, otherwise is the result of the actions taken by the author, of the struggles configuration in the philosophical field and of his biography. This dissertation is inserted among the Sociology of Culture studies, the Intellectual Life Sociology and uses as theoretical reference mainly authors such as Pierre Bourdieu, Norbert Elias, Joseph Ben-David, Wolf Lepenies and Fritz Ringer. To obtain its results were used biographies and autobiographies, testimonials, interviews, newspapers articles and letters analysis

Fil: Attallah, Carolina Veronica. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
