    Developing a monitoring system for Toyota Prius battery-packs for longer term performance issues

    The Toyota Prius battery pack consists of 38 individual battery blades, each blade contains 6 NiMH cells in series. This means that each pack contains 228 NiMH cells. Given this number of individually manufactured cells combined into a large battery pack, any individual cell or a blade getting weaker than all other linearly degrading cells, will become the performance limiting element in the pack. For example in a situation where one blade weakens down to 1200mAh compared to all other 37 blades maintaining approximately 2400mAh capacity will make the car run only 1.3 km in EV mode, compared to 2.6 km if all 38 blades are of 2400mAh capacity. In order to identify such individually weak cells, a supercapacitor based monitoring system is designed and the paper indicates the approach in developing this system, together with some details explaining the general performance of the overall system and how the new monitoring system can help in managing the battery pack life issues in the Toyota Prius

    Hybrid Car Creates Hybrid Organization: Development of Toyota's First Prius Model and Limits that Traditional Development Organization at Toyota confronted

    The manager of each function-based department holds private information about his or her respective department's fields of expertise and technological advances. Given this understanding, it may be advisable for the company's headquarters to delegate decision-making authority to the managers of these individual departments. However, if decision-making authority is delegated to individual departments or to the managers representing the interests of each of those departments, those departments may pursue their own interests even at the expense of the company's interests as a whole. By contract, the product manager does not have private information but is thinking about the new product under development as a whole and thus does not have a biased preference. The question then, is, what kind of governance structure will serve as the optimal solution? When each manager possesses a biased preference for his or her own department, it is important to consider the impact that the allocation of formal authority and the information flow within the organizational hierarchy has on the organizational capacity for innovation. This theme is developed and illustrated, using the case of development of Toyota's "Prius". In the case of Toyota Motor, too, this point has been an important issue for a long time when planning its development organization structure. The development of the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, the Prius by Toyota is one of the most successful examples of innovative product development in recent years. However, it has been hardly studied as to how such architectural innovation was possible within the largest organization in Japan. This paper argues at length the development process of the Prius and transfiguration of Toyota's development organization structure from the viewpoint of organizational economics framework. Development of the first Prius model by Toyota set the stage for adoption of a new development organization structure : the term-limited implementation of the new "Big Room" approach, which did bring about lasting changes to Toyota's organizational framework for vehicle development. It will be noted that concept design, or in other words interdepartmental coordination, was more important in the initial phase of development (the first six months), and thus, the "Big Room" structure was the development organization structure of choice for implementation. By contrast, after the initial six months, work on the concept design of the product development had been almost completed and interdepartmental coordination had become less important to the company compared with advances in the technologies for the engine and other component systems. For that reason, the development organization was transitioned to a more decentralized structure of governance, the conventional “chief engineer” structure. The new development organization is a kind of hybrid organization, which lies between "centralization" and "decentralization". Furthermore, we touched upon the point that delay is costly in decision problems because it increases the lag upon which decisions are based, and evaluated the new development organization structure from that viewpoint, too. The arguments made in this paper will presumably be of value as generalized recommendations for the shape of the development organization within large established corporations.

Moreover, in order to examine the impact of phase number on the machine characteristics, PRIUS structure is transformed into 5-phase machine of the same type and dimensions. As well, an optimization procedure is carried out to determine the optimal open angle according to main characteristics. The previous investigation is done by using a free Finite Elements Methods (FEM) program coupled with another optimization program.     Peneltian ini difokuskan pada kegiatan pemasaran yang terkait dengan strategi periklanan dalam upaya mengoptimalkan efektivitas periklanan guna pencapaian keputusan pembelian. Fokus penelitian ini adalah memperolah bukti empirik tentang kinerja efektivitas periklanan mobil Toyota dan indikator-indikator efektifitas periklanan yang mempengaruhi keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota. Metode analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode analisis deskriptif dan analisis kuantitatif dengan alat analisis menggunakan EPIC model dan regresi linier berganda. Hasil analisis menggunakan EPIC model menunjukkan bahwa periklanan mobil Toyota berada pada rentang skala efektif dan uji statistik menunjukkan bahwa secara simultan indikator-indikator efektivitas periklanan yaitu pesan iklan (X1), pengenalan merek (X2), kepercayaan konsumen (X3), dan sikap konsumen (X4) berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan pembelian (Y) pada F rasio sebesar 39.326 dengan tingkat signifikansi F< 0.05, selanjutnya secara parsial indikator-indikator efektifitas periklanan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota. Adapun sikap konsumen (X4) berpengaruh negarif, namun signifikan terhadap keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota

Para tal, foi utilizada uma sistemática que consiste em avaliar a situação atual em termos de desperdícios, re-desenhar os processos utilizando os conceitos Lean, e implantar as mudanças garantindo a sustentabilidade das melhorias efetuadas. Para cada uma dessas etapas, foram estudadas ferramentas específicas visando alcançar o objetivo proposto. O estudo de caso apresentado refere-se à aplicação desta sistemática em um Centro de Distribuição de peças automotivas para reposição de uma montadora nacional, restringindo-se, portanto, a este ambiente de trabalho. Originário da indústria automobilística, o Sistema Toyota de Produção já demonstrou resultados positivos, não somente em manufatura, mas também no setor de serviços, como supermercados, hospitais, bancos, além de operações logísticas como centros de distribuição, cross-dockings, armazéns-gerais, etc. Tendo a logística se tornado atualmente o diferencial competitivo de muitas empresas, com prazos de entrega cada vez menores e maior personalização dos serviços, este trabalho adquire especial importância uma vez que os Centros de Distribuição se constituem num dos mais importantes elos do canal de distribuição das organizações. Foi demonstrado no estudo de caso que, aplicando conceitos simples do Sistema Toyota de Produção, visando a busca contínua pela eliminação de desperdícios, foi possível obter ganhos de produtividade da ordem de 18%, bem como melhorias nos níveis de serviço em até 90%, sem grandes investimentos em infra-estrutura e tecnologia.This work aims to evaluate the implementation of Toyota#s Production System lean concepts into Warehouses and Distribution Centers. In order to achieve that, was utilized a method that consists in investigating the current situation in terms of waste, redesigning processes based on Lean concepts, and implementing the changes ensuring the sustainability of all improvements done. For each of these steps, specific tools were studied aiming to achieve the proposed results. The case study presented here refers to the application of this method in a Distribution Center for automotive spare parts of a Brazilian automaker, therefore being restricted to this working environment. Originally from automotive industry, the Toyota#s Production System has showed positive results, not only in manufacture, but also in the services segment, as supermarkets, hospitals, banks, as well as in logistics operations, like Distribution Centers, cross-dockings, general warehouses, etc. Since logistics has became a competitive differential for many companies, with even lower delivery deadlines and a higher services customization, this work acquires a special importance once the Distribution Centers consist in one of the most important links of the distribution channel in organizations. It was demonstrated in the case study that, just applying simple concepts from Toyota#s Production System, aiming the continuous search for waste elimination, was possible to improve the productivity by 18%, as well as improve the service level up to 90%, without any major investments in infrastructure and technology

    Real drive truth test of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid 2020 and energy analysis comparison with the 2017 model

    This paper presents the performance analysis of a latest-generation hybrid vehicle (Toyota Yaris 2020) with a testing campaign in real road conditions and a comparison with the previous model (Toyota Yaris 2017). The study was conducted by applying the Real Drive Truth Test protocol, developed by the research group, validated and spread to other full hybrid vehicles: Toyota Prius IV (2016) and Toyota Yaris 2017 (2017). In the case of the 2020 tests, the co-presence on board— deemed unsafe in the usual ways given the ongoing pandemic—was achieved through precise and sophisticated remote control. An on-board diagnostic computer, video transmission and recording equipment guarantee the virtual co-presence of a technical control room and a driver. Thus, several engineers can follow and monitor each vehicle via a 4G modem (installed in each vehicle), analysing data, route and driver behaviour in real-time, and therefore even in the presence of a single occupant in the car under test. The utmost attention has also been paid to adopting anti-COVID behaviours and safety standards: limited personal interactions, reduced co-presence in shared rooms (especially in the control room), vehicle sanitising between different drivers, computers and technicians and video technicians working once at a time. The comparison between the two subsequent vehicle models shows a significant improvement in the performance of the new generation Yaris, both in terms of operation in ZEV (zero-emission vehicle) mode (+15.3%) and in terms of consumption (−35.1%) and overall efficiency of the hybrid powertrain (+8.2%)

Dari hasil penelitian ini menunjukan nila probabilitas (sig) 0,006 0,05, Promotion tidak berpengaruh terhadap minat beli dengan nilai probablitas (Sig) 0,989 0,05. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção.As diversas vantagens competitivas oriundas da aplicação dos princípios do Sistema Toyota de Produção (STP), nas empresas fizeram surgir a necessidade de se adaptar o projeto de produtos a essa realidade. Visando usufruir das vantagens do STP, o presente trabalho aborda a aplicação dos princípios do STP as fases de projeto informacional e conceitual do desenvolvimento de produtos, com foco no seu resultado, ou seja, na concepção do produto. Seu principal objetivo é o de adequar as fases iniciais do desenvolvimento de produtos para que a concepção gerada atenda as premissas do STP. Para tanto, esta dissertação adapta as fases do projeto informacional e conceitual à abordagem Lean, tendo em vista suas influências no ciclo de vida do produto e todo o processo decisório envolvido contido em suas etapas. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho apresenta um estudo preliminar da abordagem Lean e de seus conceitos a fim de estruturar um metódo a ser seguido com o objetivo de gerar concepções com menores níveis de desperdícios. Por isto é proposto um modelo contendo etapas que contemplem os princípios do STP, sendo este validado através de sua aplicação em uma empresa que desenvolve produtos para área médica. O resultado obtido com a aplicação do modelo foi bastante positivo, sendo a solução gerada implementada pela empresa

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah gaya hidup (activities, interests dan opinions) mempengaruhi keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota Kijang pada masyarakat di Surabaya. Dari hasil pengujian hipotesis, diketahui bahwa gaya hidup secara simultan mempengaruhi keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota Kijang di Surabaya. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari nilai uji F dan di dapat bahwa F hitung sebesar 68,387 > F tabel sebesar I ,987, yang berarti bahwa ketiga variabel be bas (gaya hidup) secara simultan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap variabel tergantung (keputusan pembelian). Karena secara bersama-sama variabel gaya hidup berpengaruh terhadap keputusan pembelian mobil Toyota Kijang di Surabaya, maka di simpulkan bahwa hipotesis diterima "Diduga bahwa gaya hidup berpengaruh signifikan terhadap motif pembelian mobil Toyota Kijang di Surabaya"
