    Serum haemolytic and agglutinating activity as indicators of fish immunocompetence: their suitability in stress and dietary studies

    Gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata, were subjected to different stressful situations and the haemolytic activity mediated by the alternative complement and the agglutinating serum activity were tested as indicators of immunocompetence. The results show that both parameters were significantly compromised after chronic or repeated acute stress as well as in groups fed with vitamin E or Ω3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) deficient diets and in infected fish. These results suggest that both haemolytic and agglutinating activity are suitable indicators for immunocompetence as they are non-specific responses induced by non-specific stressors. In addition, a comparison is performed with other immune indicators subjected to the same stressors.4131SCI

    Time-Lag in Feeding Schedule Acts as a Stressor That Alters Circadian Oscillators in Goldfish

    The circadian system controls temporal homeostasis in all vertebrates. The light-dark (LD) cycle is the most important zeitgeber (“time giver”) of circadian system, but feeding time also acts as a potent synchronizer in the functional organization of the teleost circadian system. In mammals is well known that food intake during the rest phase promotes circadian desynchrony which has been associated with metabolic diseases. However, the impact of a misalignment of LD and feeding cycles in the entrainment of fish circadian oscillators is largely unknown. The objective of this work was to investigate how a time-lag feeding alters temporal homeostasis and if this could be considered a stressor. To this aim, goldfish maintained under a 12 h light-12 h darkness were fed at mid-photophase (SF6) or mid-scotophase (SF18). Daily rhythms of locomotor activity, clock genes expression in hypothalamus, liver, and head kidney, and circulating cortisol were studied. Results showed that SF6 fish showed daily rhythms of bmal1a and clock1a in all studied tissues, being in antiphase with rhythms of per1 genes, as expected for proper functioning clocks. The 12 h shift in scheduled feeding induced a short phase advance (4–5-h) of the clock genes daily rhythms in the hypothalamus, while in the liver the shift for clock genes expression rhythms was the same that the feeding time shift (∼12 h). In head kidney, acrophases of per genes underwent a 12-h shift in SF18 animals, but only 6 h shift for clock1a. Plasma cortisol levels showed a significant daily rhythm in animals fed at SF6, but not in SF18 fish fed, which displayed higher cortisol values throughout the 24-h. Altogether, results indicate that hypothalamus, liver, and head kidney oscillate in phase in SF6 fish, but these clocks are desynchronized in SF18 fish, which could explain cortisol alterations. These data reinforce the hypothesis that the misalignment of external cues (daily photocycle and feeding time) alters fish temporal homeostasis and it might be considered a stressor for the animals

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Effect of conjugated linoleic acid on dietary lipids utilization, liver morphology and selected immune parameters in sea bass juveniles (Dicentrarchus labrax)

    Increased energy content in fish feeds has led to an enhanced fat deposition, particularly in European sea bass, concerning fish farmers. Inclusion of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) could reduce fat deposition as in other vertebrates. To determine if dietary CLA affects fat deposition, lipid metabolism, lipid composition and morphology of different tissues, growth and selected immune parameters, European sea bass juveniles were fed 4 graded levels of CLA (0, 0.5, 1 and 2%). Growth and feed conversion were not affected by CLA, whereas feed intake was reduced (P < 0.05) by feeding 2% CLA. In these fish perivisceral fat was also reduced (P < 0.05), particularly reducing (P < 0.05) monounsaturated fatty acids. CLA has not affected tissue proximal composition, but reduced (P < 0.05) saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and increased (P < 0.05) the n−3 and n−3 highly unsaturated fatty acids in muscle and increase (P < 0.05) CLA content in muscle, liver and perivisceral fat. A progressive reduction in lipid vacuolization of hepatocytes cytoplasm and regular-shaped morphology was found in fish fed increased CLA levels, together with a progressive increase in malic enzyme activity (only significant in fish fed 1% CLA). Finally, inclusion of CLA up to 1% increased (P < 0.05) plasma lysozyme activity and was positively correlated with alternative complement pathway.1871791,607Q1SCI

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
