A global assessment of Echinococcus multilocularis infections in domestic dogs: proposing a framework to overcome past methodological heterogeneity

    No full text
Echinococcus multilocularis, the aetiological agent of human Alveolar Echinococcosis, is transmitted between small mammals and wild or domestic canids. Dogs infected with E. multilocularis as dead-end hosts. Whereas E. multilocularis infections in wild hosts and humans have been well-studied in recent decades, infections in domestic dogs are sparsely reported. This literature review and meta-analysis highlighted gaps in the available data and provided a re-assessment of the global distribution of domestic dog E. multilocularis infections. We found 46 published articles documenting the prevalence of E. multilocularis in domestic dogs from 21 countries across Europe, Asia and North America. Apparent prevalence estimates ranged from 0.00% (0.00–0.33%) in Germany to 55.50% (26.67–81.12%) in China. Most studies were conducted in areas of high human Alveolar Echinococcosis. By accounting for reassessed diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, we estimated true prevalence in a subset of studies, which varied between 0.00% (0.00–12.42%) and 41.09% (21.12–65.81%), as these true prevalence estimates were seldom reported in the articles themselves. Articles also showed a heavy emphasis on rural dogs, dismissing urban ones, which is concerning due to the role urbanisation plays in the transmission of zoonotic diseases, especially those utilising pets as definitive hosts. Lastly, population studies on canine Alveolar Echinococcosis were absent, highlighting the relative focus on human rather than animal health. We thus developed a framework for investigating domestic dog E. multilocularis infections and performing risk assessment of dog-associated transmission to fill the gaps found in the literature

Misogyny Behaviour in Miriam Toews’ Woman Talking

    No full text
The inherent stereotype of society in which women are second-class beings, where women are placed in unimportant positions is one understanding that still triggers the existense of misoginy nowadays. This is in line with the main topic of the novel Woman Talking written by Miriam Toews. Hence, this study discussed the form of Misogyny's Behavior in the Novel "Woman Talking".  the purpose of the study is to determine the  form of behavior  of Misogyny in the novel  felt by the women characters. To present accurate data of the phenomenon, the researcher collects all sources related to material objects and formal objects. Researchers used the Misogyny problem as a formal object and used the novel "Woman Talking" by Miriam Toews as a material object. Researchers used Michael Ryan's gender theory to identify problem formulations. By using the Qualitative research method, this research can obtain the result that Behavior of Mysoginy was found through gender injustices experienced by some Molostchna women, they are Subordination, Marginalization, stereotypical, workload and Violence, specifically to the kind of violence, there are 2 types shown which are rape and physical attack.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Debate on the paper by David Waltner-Toews Debate sobre o artigo de David Waltner-Toews

    No full text
David Waltner-Toews (W-T) has chosen to discuss an issue of fundamental importance, the role of environmental change and how it relates to human health, i. e., how to combine the socioeconomic and biophysical dimensions of human health. It is a complex challenge to grasp how relations between ecosystems are connected and influence the everyday life, health, and welfare of human beings. W-T applies an ecosystem approach to this task in his article. [...] If W-T intends to discuss the WHO policy starting with the 1948 founding document, such a discussion must be placed in some form of historical context, since the document is clearly biomedical and born within Western tradition

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
