Still Hungover: Todd Phillips and Rape Culture

As a textual critic who came of age in the \u2790s, it is difficult for me to talk about authorial intention. Indeed, most academics today tell their students to avoid declaring The message of a text, encouraging them instead to respect the multivalence of meaning, the slipperiness of poetic discourse, and the freedom of the author to engage discursive play without being pinned down by an absolute interpretation. But I confess that, despite my training, after having watched The Hangover and read all over the Internet about it, I can\u27t help but wonder if director Todd Phillips is a misogynistic asshole. Or maybe he is just a film director trying to make money by selling a film that denigrates women and celebrates a retrograde version of masculinity. When you live in a culture of rape, either way, it doesn\u27t really matter

This article's main objective is to analyze the characteristics of the expressionist movement in the film Joker (2019), directed by Todd Phillips, highlighting how visual and aesthetic elements contribute to the construction of the narrative and the character of Arthur Fleck, the protagonist. The understanding of madness as a psychic condition, socially sustained and produced as well, it acquires new references in cinema since the release of the film Joker, directed by Todd Phillips. On screen, Joaquim Phoenix incorporates the iconic character of DC Comics in such a way that sparks the debate about how, through a network of relationships and connections between different social actors, mental disorders are relegated to a place of exclusion and stigma, an operation that maintains dynamics and intensifies vulnerability processes. Using an existential-Sartrean theoretical framework, we seek to show how the character's trajectory, in this production, is marked by social practices that are the effect of rationalities that marginally conceive madness and associate it with dangerousness. As a result, we bring to the scene directions oriented by the anti-asylum struggle and psychiatric reform, with a view to affirming the power of non-normative lives.O entendimento sobre a loucura como condição psíquica, também sustentada e produzida socialmente, ganha novas referências no cinema a partir do lançamento do filme Coringa, dirigido por Todd Phillips.

Despite the foregoing, it is possible to evidence the application of dark psychology submerged in films. Joker, according to BBC (2019) was 2019’s sixth highest-grossing film and has become the most profitable comic book movie-based in history, earning over US950 million at the worldwide box office. This study analyzes the main character who is described as having mental illness. The formulation of the problem in this study is divided into two, namely (1) How is mental illness described through the main character in the joker by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver? (2.) What factors make the main character suffer mental illness in the joker film script by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver? This research is a study of literary psychology which is an interdisciplinary study. This study combines psychology as an approach in understanding a literary work, that other disciplines have a relationship with literature. One of the reasons why psychology has a relationship with literature is that writers always use various kinds of conflicts in psychology into their writings. This research uses literary criticism method using a psychoanalytic approach by Sigmund Freud. In this study, it was found that the main character Arthur Fleck suffered from mental illness. In the course of his life suffering from this disease, he feels that his life has no meaning at all so he feels that good fortune is not on his side, the characteristics of those who suffer from mental illness are having negative thoughts and not caring about the social norms that apply in an environment. Public. The most influential factors in his life are biological factors because his mother has a history of delusional disease and the second factor is social environmental factors that make mental illness sufferers worse in life. So mental illness sufferers who always do things outside the habit or violate social norms are not baseless, but there are several factors that make mental illness sufferers worse because in the findings that the researchers found in this study, the main character only needs to be recognized by the surrounding environment

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
