Theocritus and Bucolic Poetry
This paper explores the origins and formation of bucolic poetry as a distinct genre within the Theocritean corpus. We know little or nothing about the pre-Theocritean traditions on archetypal figures such as Daphnis or Comatas, but it is reasonable to suppose that their Theocritean counterparts resulted from substantial inventive reworking. As suggested by Theocritus' treatment of Polyphemus, who is a primary model for his bucolic characters, the origins of Theocritean bucolic poetry should be traced back to a wide spectrum of traditions and literary genres which Theocritus recast in a highly creative manner. Some recurring features characterize bucolic poetry in the Theocritean corpus. It is also noteworthy that the words 'boukolikos', 'boukoliasdomai', and 'boukoliastas' occur in several Theocritean bucolic poems, always in connection with pastoral song and music. The paper offers an overview of the bucolic Idylls of the Theocritean corpus according to the different kinds of bucolic songs they contain or resemble: solo performances, 'prompt and response' exchanges, 'cut and thrust' exchanges, and juxtaposed songs

Theocritus and the Visual Arts
International audienceEven though Theocritus’ poetry is often associated by modern readers with visuality, there is only one full description of a work of art in the Idylls. This chapter argues that the visual quality of Theocritus’ poetry has several causes: 1) the presence of several brief mentions of works of art over the Theocritean corpus; 2) the clever use of techniques of enargeia and the way in which Theocritus signals his use of enargeia through allusions to Homeric passages that were themselves considered to have a visual quality; 3) the presence of hidden allusions to works of art that were part of the shared visual culture of Hellenistic times and would allow the reader to visualize at least some of the scenes. For instance, a number of the humble characters of Theocritus’ poetry have parallels in the visual arts (e. g., the pharmakeutriai or the fishermen) and some mythological scenes (the deaths of Hylas and Pentheus, the description of Amycus, the battle of the Dioscuri and the Apharetids) had precise parallels in the visual arts. At least some ancient readers of Theocritus appear to have shared our sensitivity to the visual quality (enargeia) of Theocritus’ poetry. This is the case of the anonymous author of Idyll 25, but also of the Elder Philostratus who tried to emulate Theocritean enargeia in Imagines 2.18. It is also possible to cite two cases in which the owner of a house or villa commissioned a painting or mosaic inspired by Theocritus’ poetry: this is the case in the “House of Propertius” in Assisi and in the possible remains of an imperial villa of Homs/Emesa. Further pictorial renditions of Theocritus’ poetry were invented over time, from Byzantine silverware to the nineteenth-century Barbizon school
Comedy Genre Tradition of Theocritus Idyll
Bakalaura darba secinājumi izriet no praktiskajā daļā sasniegtajiem mērķiem. In Hellenistic time formed a new genre – bucolic. It is one of the main literary trends that strives for originality and results in the search for novelties. Bucolic in ancient genres and ancient topics has unusual presentation. Theocritus choose his way, combining ancient folklore - folkloristic bucolic - with in literature recently arisen genres - New comedy (nea).
The bachelor thesis assumption is to see parallels between Theocritus idylls and comedy genres, between borrowed characters and motifs. The thesis author views aspects of the comedy genre in tune with Theocritus idylls seeking common and different properties.
The bachelor thesis is composed of three basic chapters. First section viewed poet Theocritus in Hellenistic literary context. The second part is dedicated to Theocritus bucolic origin and impact on sources. In the third chapter the author looked at new attic comedy elements in Theocritus bucolics.
The thesis conclusions arising from the practical parts of the objectives achieved. In Theocritus bucolic are visible new attic comedy features. As characters, as well as motifs appear in the comedy elements. While work progresses, the author concludes that the works of Theocritus have visible images and themes analogues, characters who are also visible in Menander works, and also the motifs are alike
