No full text

New Age Astrology in the Time of Computer Technologies

No full text
Anna Tessmann Occult knowledge transforms itself quickly, responding to technological as well as a commercial spirit of the time. One of the most obvious beneficiaries of the recent technological achievements in the occult sphere is astrology. The advent of a personal computer in the early 1970s in the USA accompanied, above all, the transition from elite to mass astrology. Computer programs allowed everyone to tackle the complexity and multi-variety of the astrological chart and its interp..

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Structured becoming: evolutionary processes in design engineering

No full text
Computational design techniques are changing the role of analysis tools in collaborations between architects and engineers. Digital feedback loops of synthesis, analysis and evaluation establish a ‘process of becoming’ in which structural solutions evolve and adapt to specific requirements. Highly differentiated constructions are possible when digital techniques are fully integrated in design and production. Klaus Bollinger, Manfred Grohmann and Oliver Tessmann discuss these novel paradigms in relation to recent projects from engineering office Bollinger + Grohmann.</p

Sensitive assembly: Gamifying the design and assembly of facade wall prototypes

No full text
The article describes a method for gamifying the design and assembly of computationally integrated structures built out of discrete identical blocks. As a case study, the interactive installation Sensitive Assembly was designed and built at the Digital Design Unit (Prof. Dr Oliver Tessmann) at the Technische Universit\ue4t of Darmstadt and exhibited during the digital art festival NODE 2015 in Frankfurt in 2015. Sensitive Assembly invites people to play a Jenga-like game: starting from a solid wall, players are asked to remove and replace the installation\u27s building blocks to create windows to a nurturing light while challenging its stability. A computational system that senses the current state of the wall guides the physical interaction and predicts an approaching collapse or a new light beam breaking through. The installation extends the notion of real-time feedback from the digital into the physical and uses machine-learning techniques to predict future structural behaviour

Variations on the Author

No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Roll-Locks: A Fabrication to Self-Assembly Design-Framework for Reusable Discrete Concrete Elements

No full text
Roll-Lock is a research project in which building elements are informed for motion and future reuse. This paper gives technical insight into systematically investigating lightweight, hollow, and kinetic concrete elements’ geometrical and physical properties. The massive-looking yet lightweight, hollow, robotically materialized concrete elements are designed to join together, but not permanently. A single person can move and assemble them with their dry-joint, interlocking connection and charged center of mass (CoM) (Fig. 1). The elements are programmed for guided self-assembly, disassembly, and re-assembly through embedded geometrical and physical attributes (Fig. 2). The reconfiguration allows for a more circular approach and reuse of concrete elements in the architectural context. Furthermore, this research seeks to provide novel strategies to save building material resources by rotoforming (Tessmann and Mehdizadeh 2020), thereby minimizing material consumption and significantly reducing the weight of hollow concrete elements (Fig. 4)

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
