Albin F. Irzyk Oral History Interview
Albin F. Irzyk was the commander of the 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, which liberated Ohrdruf on April 4, 1945. In this interview, he gives the highlights of the division\u27s arrival in Europe, experiences during the Battle of the Bulge, and progression through the Rhineland. En route to Dresden, Irzyk received orders to go to Ohrdruf and look for an underground complex which was thought to hold communications equipment. His division bivouacked outside the town for the night and started to hear reports of bodies. The next morning, Irzyk went into the camp to look around, finding over 300 corpses. He describes his reactions to the camp and how it affected him as a commanding officer. Irzyk retired from the army as a brigadier general and is the author of three books about the U.S. military

Locks for the use of IEC 61508 to ML Safety-Critical Applications and Possible Solutions
International audienceIn the past few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and more precisely Machine Learning (ML), have been developing quickly and have found applications in a lot of various fields, including industry. The process industry and the use of machinery are critical because they represent a high risk for the surroundings, humans, goods and environment. To mitigate those risks, safety devices carrying out safety functions are used to monitor and control processes and machinery in real time. IEC 61508 which gives a framework to certify the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of such systems is not suitable for complex algorithms like ML algorithms can be. We will attempt in this paper to discuss the general concepts of the standard that hinder the development and assessment of a safety devices using AI in the current state of knowledge. To the end, after describing the specificities of safety-critical systems and presenting the basic principles of AI and ML, this paper highlights the locks for the use of IEC 61508 and suggests some leverages, such as the use of a new safety lifecycle, a minimal level of transparency and explainability as well as the demonstration of robustness based on formal verification, testing and new metrics. Disclaimer: AI is an area of research which is currently booming, the scientific knowledge is progressing rapidly, especially on the topics of safety assurance, testing, V&V, robustness, explainable AI (XAI). Thus, this article could not be exhaustive and represents our current state of knowledge on that matter. Some information in this paper have been taken from standards projects of the ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC42

Reform der Tötungsdelikte – Eine unendliche Geschichte? | Gedanken zu Albin Esers Ideen zu einer Neugestaltung der §§ 211 – 213 StGB
Since 1980, Albin Eser presented and co-authored various proposals for the reform of intentional homicide offenses in German criminal law. Yet, the misguided and outdated formulations on murder and manslaughter introduced in the German Penal Code in 1941 still remain in force. The author, in the spirit of Albin Eser’s writings, presents a reform proposal based on a graduated model of aggravated, „normal“, and mitigated instances of intentional homicide. The distinction between these three degrees of homicide relies on a flexible system of aggravating and mitigating circumstances, which relate to the circumstances of the killing and special conflict situations of the perpetrator

Refined intersection homology on non-Witt spaces
We investigate a generalization to non-Witt stratified spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky–MacPherson. The second-named author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we first extend both of these cohomology theories by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. Our main result is that this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory on Thom–Mather stratified spaces. The word "refined" is motivated by the fact that the definition of this cohomology theory depends on the choice of an additional structure (mezzo-perversity) which is automatically zero in the case of a Witt space
Speaking of Books… Connecting with Faculty through a Campus Author Series
A faculty author speaker series is an effective way to build bridges between academic librarians and the teaching faculty, as well as raise the profile of the university library. To explore the challenges and rewards of hosting such a series, this article presents a history of the series “Speaking of Books… Conversations with Campus Authors” at the University of Maryland. It discusses the details of planning and executing author events, in the hope that others can use this information to host their own lecture series. Finally, it presents a few ideas for future directions of the faculty author series.https://southernlibrarianship.icaap.org/content/v10n01/hackman_t01.htm
