Feasibility of Software-Based Duty Cycling of GPS for Trajectory-Based Services

    No full text
Energy-efficient localization is increasingly important for many types of smartphone apps. The research community has argued that fixed duty cycling of GPS is not a good choice for trajectory-based services concerning route accuracy. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a highly accurate map matching and path construction algorithm. Furthermore, with thorough field experiments, we show that fixed duty cycling of a smartphone GPS receiver is a feasible approach for trajectory-based services, and it can achieve considerable energy conservation without sacrificing much route accuracy. When increasing the GPS sampling period beyond 120 seconds, it saves at least 78% energy in comparison to continuous GPS sampling, while the loss of route accuracy tends to be stable around 23%.Li, Xiaohan, Yuan, Fengpeng, & Lindqvist, Janne. On My Way: Optimizing Driving Routes for Navigation Applications

    No full text
Conventionally, the route recommendations given by GPS navigation applications have been considered as the optimal route search problem only between two locations - origin and destination. Sometimes people want to visit several intermediate locations prior to reaching their final destination. For example, travelers may want to visit a diner and a gas station before arriving at their vacation destination. Although there is likely to be many choices that are available along the route to the destination, only one place from each type should be chosen. Furthermore, in new emerging application domains, such as “physical-world crowdsourcing”, people may want to opportunistically visit some places in order to complete personal or work related tasks. Our work explores a design space where we try to reduce the amount of requests made to third-party map and route data providers. We explore the simple idea of using the Euclidean distance as a rough estimate for the optimal route between destinations with multiple waypoints. Our preliminary results indicate that with over 80% of test cases, this simple Euclidean distance estimator approach gives at least one optimal routing alternative.Yuan, Fengpeng, Song, Xueyuan & Lindqvist, Janne. In his literary works, the Swedish author Peter Pohl (b. 1940) persistently deals with the issue of friendship which is described as a source of joy and consolation as well as a cause for difficulties and pain. Another common theme in his writing is vulnerability, especially that of children and adolescents, as he regards them as particularly exposed to violence and injustice. Pohl features the act of telling as an important instrument in the process of personal development on many different levels. Finally, his authorship shows that his purpose is to be a spokesman for those who cannot speak for themselves. These four topics which are visible in the main part of his production represent the most important aspects of Pohl's literary project which may be described as a desire to improve the conditions of less privileged groups of society. This thesis deals with the works by Pohl written between 1985 and 2007. In the first chapter, the author is presented. The second chapter is an analysis of his first novel Janne, min vän with a special focus on the above-mentioned themes. Chapter three deals with the novel Malins kung Gurra, a story for young readers that can be looked upon as second, but simpler version of Janne, min vän. In chapter four, the five novels Regnbågen har bara åtta färger, Medan regnbågen bleknar, Vi kallar honom Anna, Vilja växa and Klara papper är ett måste are analyzed and discussed. The last chapter is an attempt at dealing with the remaining books written by Pohl. The aim is to establish whether these works are compatible with the general picture given of Pohl’s literary project

Jouko Turkan Teatterikorkeakoulun kauden yhteiskunnallinen kontekstuaalisuus vuosina 1982 - 1985

The subject of my doctoral thesis is the social contextuality of Finnish theater director, Jouko Turkka's (b. 1942) educational tenure in the Theater Academy of Finland 1982 1985. Jouko Turkka announced in the opening speech of his rectorship in 1982 that Finnish society had undergone a social shift into a new cultural age, and that actors needed new facilities like capacity, flexibility, and ability for renewal in their work. My sociological research reveals that Turkka adapted cultural practices and norms of new capitalism and new liberalism, and built a performance environment for actors' educational work, a real life simulation of a new capitalist workplace. Actors educational praxis became a cultural performance, a media spectacle. Turkka's tenure became the most commented upon and discussed era in Finnish postwar theater history. The sociological method of my thesis is to compare information of sociological research literature about new capitalist work, and Turkka's educational theater work. In regard to the conceptions of legitimation, time, dynamics, knowledge, and social narrative consubstantial changes occurred simultaneously in both contexts of workplace. I adapt systems and chaos theory's concepts and modules when researching how a theatrical performance self-organizes in a complex social space and the space of Information. Ilya Prigogine's chaos theoretic concept, fluctuation, is the central social and aesthetic concept of my thesis. The chaos theoretic conception of the world was reflected in actors' pedagogy and organizational renewals: the state of far from equilibrium was the prerequisite of creativity and progress. I interpret the social and theater's aesthetical fluctuations as the cultural metaphor of new capitalism. I define the wide cultural feedback created by Turkka's tenure of educational praxis, and ideas adapted from the social context into theater education, as an autopoietic communicative process between theater education and society: as a black box, theater converted the virtual conception of the world into a concrete form of an actor's psychophysical praxis. Theater educational praxis performed socially contextual meanings referring to a subject's position in the social change of 1980s Finland. My other theoretic framework lies close to the American performance theory, with its close ties to the social sciences, and to the tradition of rhetoric and communication: theater's rhetorical utility materializes quotidian cultural practices in a theatrical performance, and helps the audience to research social situations and cultural praxis by mirroring them and creating an explanatory frame.Väitöskirjatyössäni tutkin teatteriohjaaja Jouko Turkan (s.1942) Teatterikorkeakoulun kauden yhteiskunnallista kontekstuaalisuutta vuosina 1982 - 1985. Jouko Turkka ilmoitti vuonna 1982 Teatterikorkeakoulun rehtorinkautensa linjapuheessa, että Suomessa oli tapahtunut siirtymä uuteen kulttuurikauteen ja tämän vuoksi näyttelijän tuli omaksua uusia valmiuksia, kuten tehokkuuden, joustavuuden ja uusiutumisen kykyjä. Sosiologisesta näkökulmasta Turkan koulutusohjelman toteuttamiseen liittyvä aineisto osoittaa uuden kapitalismin ja uusliberalismin käytäntöjä ja normeja sovelletun teatterikoulutukseen. Innovaatiostrategioihin rinnastettavat tulevaisuuteen valmistautumisen mallit kuuluivat kauden ohjelmaan. Turkka rakensi näyttelijäopiskelijoiden suoritusympäristöksi todellisuussimulaation 1980-luvun Suomen työelämän olosuhteista, jokapäiväisen kokemuksen malleista ja kulttuurisista tendensseistä. 1980-luvun Suomessa ja länsimaissa tapahtui tieteellisen maailmankuvan siirtymä klassisesta fysiikasta kohti systeemiteorian holismia. Tieteellisen maailmankuvan muutos materialisoitui epätasapainon ymmärtämisessä luovuuden ja kehityksen reunaehtoina. Rinnasteinen näkemys toteutui Turkan kauden pedagogiassa ja korkeakoulun organisatorisissa uudistuksissa. Kaaosteorian heilahdus-mallilla analysoin vyörymämäisiä prosesseja Turkan kauden teatterikoulutuksessa. Turkan johtajankaudesta Teatterikorkeakoulussa tuli eniten kommunikaatiota herättänyt teatteritoiminnan jakso suomalaisen teatterin lähihistoriassa. Poikkeuksellisen suuri yleisön osallistuminen voidaan ymmärtää autopoieettiseksi: vuorovaikutuksesta tuli kulttuurinen esitys. Maailmankuvallisia rakenteita testattiin kuljettamalla niitä subjektin ruumiillisuuden ja läsnäolon kautta: legitimaatiota, dynamiikkaa, aikakäsitystä ja tietoa. Tutkimukseni sosiologisen perustan rakennan vertailemalla uuden kapitalismin kulttuuria koskevan sosiologisen tutkimuskirjallisuuden aineistoa ja Turkan kauden aineistoa. Tulkintani perustuu uutta retoriikkaa soveltavan amerikkalaisen esitystutkimuksen perinteeseen: yleisö voi osallistua yhteiskunnallisten tilanteiden kulttuuriseen tutkimukseen teatterin kautta. Systeemi- ja kaaosteorian mallein tutkin teatterin laajenemista tapahtumaksi sosiaalisessa tilassa ja mediainformaation aistiavaruudessa. Käsittelen tekijyyttä tällaisessa teos-kontekstin ulkopuolelle sijoittuvassa esityksessä maailmankuvallisen murtuman ja luonnollisen kertomuksen mallien kautta.ei saavutettav

    Performance-in-Business : Armi Ratia's Marimekko

    No full text
My article, "Performance-in-Business: Armi Ratia's Marimekko", examines what happens to artistic performance in the concept of arts-in-business. In theatre and artistic performance, artistic thinking has traditionally been considered primary over economic thinking, but in arts-in-business the goal has been economic. The concept of arts-in-business, created in the 2000s, involves the strategic use of artistic elements in business in order to develop the creativity, problem-solving abilities, and innovativeness of employees as well as the brand of the business company. I will analyze the use of theatre as part of two historical forms of arts-in-business, the Bauhaus movement in Germany from 1919 to 1933, and the 2000s concept of arts-in-business. Regarding the latter, I will draw meanings from Lotte Darso's (2004), Giovanni Schiuma's (2011), and Jon McKenzie's (2001) research on performance in business. After initiating a dialogue between these two approaches, I will provide a new theory for arts-in-business and apply it to Marimekko's business practice. McKenzie (2001), as well as other studies of arts-in-business in the 2000s, does not emphasize the role of the manager-as-an-artist. In this article, I claim that only if the manager initiates artistic practice and the arts are interrelated to the product, can the arts penetrate the whole enterprise because of the role of managers in making constitutive decisions for the business. I will argue that some managers are able to do this. Ratia's Marimekko is my exemplary case. As the key concept of my new theory of performance-in-business I employ performance scholar Josette Feral's (2002) cognitively-oriented theory of theatricality based on the concept of a cleft and its variants in other theories. In the last section of this article, I will examine the Finnish fashion design company, Marimekko, under the management of Armi Ratia, as a business that employs the theatricality of clefts.Peer reviewe

Modalities or Surfaces: Postmodern Poetics and a Riddle

    No full text
This article will examine the playing with aesthetical surfaces in postmodern theatre and how itreflects the poetics and the cultural logic of late capitalism. Surfaces are examined as aestheticelements of the postmodern culture of the image. This culture is not neutral as it seems toreject the modern spiritual depth, for instance, sense of history and hermeneutic depth. Thearticle examines the riddle concerning how the absence of these aspects of human thought insurfaces generates the spectators' need to produce coherent individual activities, trajectories, and eventually acoherent culture. This reflexive mechanism of surfacesis analyzed within theframework of Donald Norman's (2005) cognitive principles of design. Starting from thepremise of Gilles Deleuze's and Felix Guattari's (1987) and Lev Vygotsky's (1978) notions ofplay, it is interpreted that postmodern stage and culture works, metaphorically, like the plane ofimmanence, the way of thinking in which an agent is able to move, make transitions andcrossings in a revolutionary way without restrictions of reality's conditions. However, culturally the blurring of boundaries between play and reality may lead to delirium andill-founded practices. Theatre and art examine these ill-founded practices but involve in theirpoetics a strong dimension of reflexive level of human cognition. This reflexive level is anexplanatory perspective, which helps spectators examine theatre's mechanisms as metaphors ofcultural logic, to achieve a critical position extrinsic from the flux of postmodern culture. Thispoetics is examined in several cases of theatrical representation including Sofia Coppola's filmThe Bling Ring (2013), The Need Company's production The Lobster Shop (2006), KristianSmeds' production The Unknown Soldier (2007) and in several casesof postmodern art and stagedesign
