    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Application of a Virtual Reality Educational Game to Improve Design Review Skills

    Innovative software and technology solutions, such as building information modeling and virtual reality, are increasingly being adopted by the construction industry. One use of this technology is to utilize BIM models to perform design reviews in immersive virtual reality environments. Performing a design review, whether on paper drawings or in VR environments requires essential and strong problem-solving and evaluation skills. The objective of this paper is to support the development and education of such design review skills in undergraduate construction students using virtual reality simulation games. To achieve this objective, 32 undergraduate construction management students were asked to use the design review simulator, an educational virtual reality game designed with the learning objective of teaching design review skills. During the experiment the students were tasked with identifying noticeable design mistakes and writing down these mistakes as they were encountered. There were three basic research questions the authors were seeking to address in this experiment: 1) does playing the simulation game in VR encourage students to identify a higher number of design mistakes than evaluating the design on paper, 2) do design review skills gained from performing the design review in one mode transfer to the other alternate mode, 3) does the order in which the design review methods are implemented affect student improvements in design review skills? Based on the analysis of the results, the authors could conclude that the students gained design review skills. Through the use of the DRS the students found a significant higher number of design mistakes when performing design reviews in virtual reality, in comparison to performing design reviews using physical construction drawings. With study, the authors provide an example of how virtual reality simulation games can be leveraged in the classroom to gain design review skills. In future research, the authors will perform comparative experiments to test if the game supports higher gains in skills with knowledge tests.</p

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Exploring the Development Trends and Characteristics of the U.S. Green Building Market

    The AEC industry has witnessed an increasing growth in the green building market in the past decade and continues to expect its promising future. While most of the prior research on the green building market was conducted based on the survey data at the project level, how the corporate dimension develops is still lacking. To fill the gap, this research attempted to explore the characteristics of the U.S. green building market from a corporate perspective both quantitatively and qualitatively. We first collected data of 223 top/representative green building contractors in the U.S. identified by the Engineering News-Record over the past decade, and explored the development trend. The 223 organizations were further categorized into three different groups with distinct characteristics and corporate strategy using k-means clustering. This research provided practitioners and academics with a holistic understanding of the U.S. green building market, as well as contributed to the development of green building corporation management strategy.</p

    Context Integration for Reliable Anomaly Detection from Imagery Data for Supporting Civil Infrastructure Operation and Maintenance

    abstract: Imagery data has become important for civil infrastructure operation and maintenance because imagery data can capture detailed visual information with high frequencies. Computer vision can be useful for acquiring spatiotemporal details to support the timely maintenance of critical civil infrastructures that serve society. Some examples include: irrigation canals need to maintain the leaking sections to avoid water loss; project engineers need to identify the deviating parts of the workflow to have the project finished on time and within budget; detecting abnormal behaviors of air traffic controllers is necessary to reduce operational errors and avoid air traffic accidents. Identifying the outliers of the civil infrastructure can help engineers focus on targeted areas. However, large amounts of imagery data bring the difficulty of information overloading. Anomaly detection combined with contextual knowledge could help address such information overloading to support the operation and maintenance of civil infrastructures. Some challenges make such identification of anomalies difficult. The first challenge is that diverse large civil infrastructures span among various geospatial environments so that previous algorithms cannot handle anomaly detection of civil infrastructures in different environments. The second challenge is that the crowded and rapidly changing workspaces can cause difficulties for the reliable detection of deviating parts of the workflow. The third challenge is that limited studies examined how to detect abnormal behaviors for diverse people in a real-time and non-intrusive manner. Using video andii relevant data sources (e.g., biometric and communication data) could be promising but still need a baseline of normal behaviors for outlier detection. This dissertation presents an anomaly detection framework that uses contextual knowledge, contextual information, and contextual data for filtering visual information extracted by computer vision techniques (ADCV) to address the challenges described above. The framework categorizes the anomaly detection of civil infrastructures into two categories: with and without a baseline of normal events. The author uses three case studies to illustrate how the developed approaches can address ADCV challenges in different categories of anomaly detection.     Construction Waste Material Cross Jurisdictional Trading: A PESTEL Framework of the Greater Bay Area in China

    Construction waste, as a by-product of construction activities, has raised great concern worldwide due to its adverse effects on the environment. Extensive studies have been conducted to devise various strategies to improve the construction waste management performance. Various measures guided by the 3R principles have been proposed in the last few decades, which has indeed relieved the construction waste issues. However, with the increasingly severe construction waste issues in the predictable future, it is also highly necessary to have other innovative strategies in addition to the 3R principles as handling construction waste issues is a systematic project. Amid all the strategies, the management of inert portion, termed as construction waste material (CWM), occupying the predominant volume in the total construction waste has received increasing concerns. Now, a promising solution is to boost the CWM cross jurisdictional trade, which very few studies have been conducted. However, the de facto extent of this trade is still too modest and the barriers against it are still yet to be known. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the research gap by investigating the potential barriers to CWM trading through adoption of political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal (PESTEL) framework with a case study of Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. It is discovered that insufficient political and economic incentives, weak public consciousness, lack of labelling of compliant materials, asymmetric information, and imperfect legal system have hindered the development of CWM trading. Through the case study of GBA, some significant hints and references can be obtained for GBA and beyond to devise more targeted strategic framework to boost the CWM cross jurisdictional trade so that CWM issues can be generally relieved if not fully eliminated. The research deliverables are of benefit for various jurisdictions to relieve the long-lasting construction waste issues.</p
