    Ambulatory assisted living fallers at greatest risk for head injury

    OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between head injuries sustained during each fall with various known high risk health and demographic factors predictive of falls. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study conducted over 1 year SETTING: Assisted living and skilled nursing units of a Continuing Care Retirement Community located in the northeastern United States. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty nine OAs who fell. MEASUREMENTS: Age, gender, diagnosis, high risk medication, functional, cognitive, ambulation/elimination status, mode of locomotion, fall related symptoms and the position of the fall, were analyzed using General Estimating Equations among elderly fallers with and without head injury. RESULTS: A total of 173 falls (average of 2.9 times) were observed for 62 patients who had complete injury data. Injuries were recorded in 40.5% of falls, with 41.4% being head injuries. Head injuries were more likely to be hematomas than lacerations (66.7% vs. 14.7%) and among assisted living residents (p=0.04). Head injured patients were more likely to be walking at the time of the fall (69% vs. 36.1%) and less likely to have bowel incontinence (3.5% vs. 28.5%; p=0.04). None of the high risk diagnosis or medications associated with falls risk increased risk for head injury. CONCLUSION: Those at greatest risk for head injury were ambulatory assisted living residents. None of the known clinical conditions predictive of risk to fall were predictive of head injury. For head injury prevention to be successful we need a closer examination of resident’s mobility, shoe-wear, health behavior with respect to ability to use assistive devices, and floor surface landing area. Future health policy implications include measures to ensure standard of care practices for head injured patients are in place.This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Gray-Miceli, D. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman terung (Solanum melongena L.) terhadap pemberian pupuk organik kotoran kambing dan pupuk phospat. Penulis melaksanakan penelitian mulai bulan April-Juli 2019 yang dilakukan dikebun percobaan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, Jl. Karimata, Kecamatan Sumbersari, Kabupaten Jember. Dengan ketinggian tempat ± 89 meter di atas permukaan laut (mdpl). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan secara faktorial (3 x 3) dengan pola dasar Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) yang terdiri dari dua faktor yaitu faktor pertama pemberian Kotoran Kambing (K) dan Pupuk Phospat (P) yang masing-masing perlakuan diulang sebanyak 3 kali. Faktor perlakuan pertama adalah dosis pupuk kotoran kambing (33 ton/Ha, 50 ton/Ha, dan 66 ton/Ha) faktor ke-2 adalah dosis pupuk Phospat (1660 g/Ha, 3320 g/Ha, 4980 g/Ha). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pupuk organik kotoran kambing berbeda nyata terhadap jumlah cabang 20 hst dan 30 hst, sedangkan pupuk Phospat hanya berpengaruh berbeda nyata terhadap diameter buah. Pengaruh interaksi pupuk organik kotoran kambing dan pupuk phospat tidak berbeda nyata pada pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman terung (Solanum melongena L.) The purpose of this study was to determine the growth and production of eggplant crops (Solanum melongena L.) for the provision of organic goat manure and phosphate fertilizer. In this case the author carried out research starting from April-July 2019 which was conducted in the experimental garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Muhammadiyah Jember, Jl. Karimata, Sumbersari District, Jember Regency. Starting in April to July 2019 with altitude of ± 89 meters above sea level (masl). This research was carried out in factorial (3 x 3) with a basic pattern of Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of two factors, namely the first factor giving Goat Manure (K) and Phosphate Fertilizer (P) which each treatment was repeated 3 times . The first treatment factor is the dose of goat manure (33 tons/Ha, 50 tons/Ha, and 66 tons/Ha) the second factor is the Phosphate fertilizer dose (1660 g/Ha, 3320 g/Ha, 4980 g/Ha). The results showed that goat manure organic fertilizer was significantly different from the number of branches of 20 hst and 30 hst, whereas Phosphate fertilizers only significantly affected fruit diameter. The effect of interaction between organic fertilizer from goat manure and phosphate fertilizer was not significantly different in the growth and production of eggplant plants (Solanum melongena L.)     Disruption and design through ‘aesthetic co-production’ in Engineering Entrepreneurship Education

    Engineering Entrepreneurship Education has increasingly engaged in the social and environmental effects of Technology-Based Entrepreneurship (TBE), with demands to make society more participative in worldmaking seen as a responsible aesthetic choice related to design. We wish to delve deeper into the teaching and learning needed to understand participative processes in such choices, by pedagogic development of a TBE course called ‘Aesthetics, design and sustainability’, embedded in the curricula of Uppsala School of Entrepreneurship. Pedagogically guided by a focus on aesthetic co-production, we suggest teachers can better foster engineering students’ awareness of their own abilities to engage in disruptive configurations, which is fundamental to entrepreneurship, and worldmaking, which is fundamental to socio-technological progress. The aim is to advance and mobilize the concept of ‘aesthetic co-production’ in the classroom and beyond, with particular focus on how customers/users can be enabled to interact with the environment, designers, business developers and technology, to configure new knowledge through directed entanglements, materialized in the form of more sustainable technological solutions. We elaborate on this strategic process of participation by drawing on the experience of an engineering student from the School of Entrepreneurship, (co-author Arwin Zendehrokh), who currently is enabling an industrial partner to merge Additive Manufacturing with design and aesthetics to secure custom-made sustainable solutions. Since engineering students are particularly prone to base their worldmaking in expertise on technology, we suggest this pedagogic approach on aesthetic co-production is crucial for the creation of a shift in their understanding of the social and environmental effects of TBE.</p

    Mitigation of Biodynamic Feedthrough for Touchscreens on the Flight Deck

    Biodynamic feedthrough (BDFT) is a key issue for touchscreen operations on the future flight deck, as cockpit accelerations due to turbulence leave pilots vulnerable to erroneous touches that disrupt task performance. This research focuses on the implementation of a software-based cancellation approach to mitigate the adverse effects of BDFT in touchscreen dragging tasks. A flight-simulator experiment with 18 participants was performed to estimate models of BDFT dynamics for horizontal and vertical touch-inputs on a primary flight display. The averaged BDFT models were used to cancel BDFT in the same continuous dragging task used for model identification and a discrete point-to-point dragging task. While for the continuous task the cancellation enabled 63% mitigation in BDFT, the same cancellation was ineffective for the discrete task, due to reduced BDFT susceptibility. Overall, the results show that while model-based BDFT cancellation can be highly effective, a key technical challenge will be ensuring it is sufficiently task-adaptive.Control & Simulatio

    A future-proof food box: Making sustainable consumption choices easier with design

    Our food system has a huge impact on the environment and is one of the largest contributors to a global threat: climate change. The meat industry alone accounts for 15% of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, the solution would be eating less meat and dairy. But although the Dutch eat most meat replacers in Europe, the annual meat consumption hasn’t declined between 2005 and 2019. The growing number of vegans and vegetarians in The Netherlands show that it isn’t always willingness to eat less meat, but often it is habitual behaviour that is hard to disrupt. Teaching and preaching sustainability is proven to be ineffective, since consumers often filter out information that doesn’t result in short-term benefits and personal gain. Filtering out information is to reduce the mental load that consists of several struggles that consumers experience in the cooking process: finding inspiration, sticking to their budget and eating healthy and varied food. And even if consumers consider sustainability, it almost never has top priority. Therefore, a product or service that wants to help consumers choose to consume more sustainably should, primarily, focus on offering personal value and short-term benefits. In addition, sustainability has to be subtly incorporated, but never be the main attribute of the product. Consumers are already looking for help with their struggles in the cooking process, like finding inspiration Consumers are already looking for help with their struggles in the cooking process, like finding inspiration and help online and buying products that make cooking simpler and more convenient, like food boxes. But, research shows that consumers quit their food box subscription, because it is too expensive and they have no control over the size, quality and price of the vegetables. Furthermore, the recipe and herbs/sauce of the food box are considered more valuable than the vegetables. Therefore, the product that is developed in this project is a food box without vegetables. Instead, consumers receive a recipe, for inspiration and including a shopping list, and a ready-to-use sauce made of natural herbs and ingredients, which helps them with the most expensive and complicated part of a meal. All recipes are vegetarian, which nudges sustainable consumption, without compromising on price and convenience. Vegetables can be purchased in the local supermarket or local market. This increases the physical barrier compared to regular food boxes, but gives the consumer a lot of flexibility in return. The focus of the solution is to reduce the mental load for the consumer by making eating less meat easier, not more complicated.     Model-Based Mitigation of Biodynamic Feedthrough for Touchscreen Dragging Tasks in Turbulence

    The anticipated arrival of touchscreens on the commercial flight deck will make pilots vulnerable to erroneous screen inputs under vibration, creating a potential safety hazard. Biodynamic feedthrough (BDFT) has shown to be a key obstacle in continuous touchscreen dragging tasks under simulated turbulence, disrupting task performance. This research therefore focuses on the implementation of a model-based approach to mitigate the adverse effects of BDFT. A human-in-the-loop experiment with 18 participants was performed. The experiment consisted of two simulator sessions, the first with the goal of collecting data used for identifying two BDFT models: a subject-average (SA) and a one-size-fits-all (OSFA) model. In the second session these two models were tested for their ability to cancel BDFT in the same two-dimensional pursuit task they were identified from, and in an additional point-to-point dragging task emulating a waypoint modification. The model-based BDFT cancellation approach was tested for two combinations of motion disturbance axis and touchscreen input direction: sway (side-to-side motion) with horizontal screen inputs and heave (up-down motion) with vertical screen inputs. The results showed it is possible to cancel between 80-90% of the BDFT in both cases despite poor cancellation for certain specific participants. The point-to-point dragging task showed much less BDFT than the continuous task used for BDFT model development, however, making the cancellation ineffective. Overall, the results show that while model-based BDFT cancellation is possible, it is crucial to account for individual variability and the specific touchscreen task
