"Gen Ed locates serious discussion of general education in the context of some of the day-to-day realities encountered in putting it into practice and promoting efforts at reform at Metropolitan Atlantic University (aka the Metro). This dual focus is found in the often-pugnacious policy debate among the faculty and a more light-hearted discussion of related questions carried on by Professor Kelly as he models Socratic teaching in his upper-level class for prospective teachers. Reforming general education at the Metro is not free of the vanities and vulgarities of ambitious men and women and self-serving politicians, of course, nor those who poke fun at them. Arnie Smatter, the irrepressible and nosey chat show host of Radio YOY ensures that this does not go unnoticed. The overall humorous tone of Gen Ed does not detract from Mulcahy's thoughtful treatment of substantive issues that will be of interest to serious scholars, students, and a general readership. Divergence of East Asians and Europeans Estimated Using Male- and Female-Specific Genetic Markers

No full text
To study themale and female lineages of East Asian and European humans, we have sequenced 25 short tandem repeat markers on 453 Y-chromosomes and collected sequences of 72 complete mitochondrial genomes to construct independent phylogenetic trees for male and female lineages. The results indicate that East Asian individuals fall into two clades, one that includes East Asian individuals only and a second that contains East Asian and European individuals. Surprisingly, the European individuals did not form an independent clade, but branched within in the East Asians. We then estimated the divergence time of the root of the European clade as ~41,000 years ago. These data indicate that, contrary to traditional views, Europeans diverged from East Asians around that time. We also address the origin of the Ainu lineage in northern Japan. © The Author(s) 2014.1

Effective HRM Practices targeting Gen-Z in the Netherlands: Keeping up with the Next Generation of Workforce

No full text
One of the greatest challenges HR professionals face today is the management of a diverse multi-generational workforce. Each generation behaves differently at the workplace and requires different sets of strategies for effective management. Generation-Z or Gen-Z are individuals born in 1995 and after. They are called the 'digital natives since they grew up in a fast-moving, highly-connected environment influenced by social media. Research indicates they are a unique generation with a different mindset compared to previous generations. Employees from previous generations are ageing and soon, Gen-Z individuals would be joining the workforce. This brings us to the question: Are HR professionals (and organisations) ready for the new generation of employees? This research is an attempt to question the relevance of current HR practices and then bridge the gap on how HR professionals could update their HR policy-making strategies in accordance with the preferences, priorities and characteristics of Gen-Z individuals. This could help HR professionals attract the right talent and retain them longer. A theoretical framework of the relationship between HRM practices and individual behaviour mediated by HRM perceptions is developed. These perceptions are influenced positively when practices are developed based on common characteristics of employees. And in this case, Gen-Z samples are chosen to investigate these characteristics to passively influence HRM perceptions which would lead to effective management of Gen-Z employees. Three HR managers, two-line managers from multinational corporations and three Gen-Z individuals with work experience, three Gen-Z individuals without work experience and one Gen-Z individual with entrepreneurship background are selected to conduct semi-structured interviews to answer the above exploitative research question qualitatively. All the Gen-Z individuals and managers are from the Netherlands and have worked/worked in multinational companies with structured HR departments in them. Research results firstly indicate a mismatch in understanding Gen-Z between line managers and HR managers. Then a list of work-life priorities of Gen-Z recognised are: flexibility, diversity & inclusion, human connect, transparency and environmental/sustainability involvement; common preferences are: work-life balance, technology interaction, contribute towards society, travel, flat hierarchy, instant feedback from managers, purpose/goal to work towards and finally characteristics are: tech-savvy, adaptable, open to change, highly connected and negative characteristics are: short span of focus, easily distracted, easily influenced by social media & pop-culture. This information is used to chart recommendations for HR professionals and provide a simple framework to assist them to navigate Gen-Z employee negotiations. In conclusion, this research explores an upcoming, vastly unexplored field of HRM combined with Generational diversity focused on Gen-Z. Decoding this unique generation could be the key to boosting organisational effectiveness both internally and externally

Natronogracilivirga saccharolytica gen. nov., sp. nov. and Cyclonatronum proteinivorum gen. nov., sp. nov., haloalkaliphilic organotrophic bacteroidetes from hypersaline soda lakes forming a new family Cyclonatronaceae fam. nov. in the order Balneolales

Two heterotrophic bacteroidetes strains were isolated as satellites from autotrophic enrichments inoculated with samples from hypersaline soda lakes in southwestern Siberia. Strain Z-1702 T is an obligate anaerobic fermentative saccharolytic bacterium from an iron-reducing enrichment culture, while Ca. Cyclonatronum proteinivorum Omega T is an obligate aerobic proteolytic microorganism from a cyanobacterial enrichment. Cells of isolated bacteria are characterized by highly variable morphology. Both strains are chloride-independent moderate salt-tolerant obligate alkaliphiles and mesophiles. Strain Z-1702 T ferments glucose, maltose, fructose, mannose, sorbose, galactose, cellobiose, N-acetyl-glucosamine and alpha-glucans, including starch, glycogen, dextrin, and pullulan. Strain Omega T is strictly proteolytic utilizing a range of proteins and peptones. The main polar lipid fatty acid in both strains is iso-C 15:0, while other major components are various C 16 and C 17 isomers. According to pairwise sequence alignments using BLAST Gracilimonas was the nearest cultured relative to both strains (<90% of 16S rRNA gene sequence identity). Phylogenetic analysis placed strain Z-1702 T and strain Omega T as two different genera in a deep-branching clade of the new family level within the order Balneolales with genus. Based on physiological characteristics and phylogenetic position of strain Z-1702 T it was proposed to represent a novel genus and species Natronogracilivirga saccharolityca gen. nov., sp. nov. (= DSMZ 109061 T =JCM 32930 T =VKM B 3262 T). Furthermore, phylogenetic and phenotypic parameters of N. saccharolityca and C. proteinivorum gen. nov., sp. nov., strain Omega T (=JCM 31662 T, =UNIQEM U979 T), make it possible to include them into a new family with a proposed designation Cyclonatronaceae fam. nov. Ultrahigh-dimensional variable selection method for whole-genome gene-gene interaction analysis

No full text
Abstract Background Genome-wide gene-gene interaction analysis using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is an attractive way for identification of genetic components that confers susceptibility of human complex diseases. Individual hypothesis testing for SNP-SNP pairs as in common genome-wide association study (GWAS) however involves difficulty in setting overall p-value due to complicated correlation structure, namely, the multiple testing problem that causes unacceptable false negative results. A large number of SNP-SNP pairs than sample size, so-called the large p small n problem, precludes simultaneous analysis using multiple regression. The method that overcomes above issues is thus needed. Results We adopt an up-to-date method for ultrahigh-dimensional variable selection termed the sure independence screening (SIS) for appropriate handling of numerous number of SNP-SNP interactions by including them as predictor variables in logistic regression. We propose ranking strategy using promising dummy coding methods and following variable selection procedure in the SIS method suitably modified for gene-gene interaction analysis. We also implemented the procedures in a software program, EPISIS, using the cost-effective GPGPU (General-purpose computing on graphics processing units) technology. EPISIS can complete exhaustive search for SNP-SNP interactions in standard GWAS dataset within several hours. The proposed method works successfully in simulation experiments and in application to real WTCCC (Wellcome Trust Case–control Consortium) data. Conclusions Based on the machine-learning principle, the proposed method gives powerful and flexible genome-wide search for various patterns of gene-gene interaction.</p

Cultural values and career goal of Gen-X and Gen-Y: a conceptual framework

No full text
Purpose: This article proposes a conceptual framework of influence of cultural values oncareer goals of Gen-X and Gen-Y. Design/methodology/approach: An integrative literature review method was employed to identify and analyse relevant literatures. The analysis is based on Schwartz’s conceptualizations of cultural values, Mayrhofer et al.’s definition of career goals, and Social Cognitive Career Theory. Keywords such as cultural values, career goal and generation workforce of Gen-X and Gen-Y were used in retrieving literatures found worldwide. Findings: The author adopted 10 personal cultural values as potential predictors of career goal perceived by the generation workforce of Gen-X and Gen-Y. Research limitations/implications: It has significance to future research in validating the proposed framework. Practical implications: Upon validation the paper could offer practical implications for human resource managers, general managers, and employees to assist in understanding the link between cultural values on career goals particularly from the perspective of Gen-X and Gen-Y. Originality/value: This study is a step forward in understanding influence of cultural values on career goals of an intergenerational workforce of Gen-X and Gen-Y. The paper suggests that practical human resource initiatives should address the issue of the influence of cultural values on career goals

Axions Beyond Gen 2

The QCD (Quantum ChromoDynamics) axion emerged as one of the best-motivated dark matter candidates. In 2018, the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX), one of the U.S. Department of Energy's Gen 2flagship dark-matter projects, demonstrated first sensitivity to the highly plausible DFSZdark matter axion couplings over a small frequency range. We anticipate this development marks the first step in constructing yet more powerful experiments that can explore large swaths of the axion parameter space at high sensitivity and result in a discovery. But, realizing this requires advances in both our understanding of the theory and experiment design. Between 25 January and 27 January 2021, the Axions Beyond Gen 2 Workshopwas held, where selected members of the community discussed our broad understanding of the QCD axion and charted a course for future experiments having sensitivity and mass reach well beyond the current Gen 2experiments. These proceedings are summaries of the topics presented and discussed. © 2023 The Author(s).11Nsciescopu
