    Proposing a Statistical Approach to Idiomatics Phrase Research

    This study explores the limitations of traditional idiom studies and proposes a new approach based on statistical methods. Conventional research has often linked idioms simplistically to society and culture, but quantitative linguistics can identify flaws in such arguments and conclusions. This study employed quantitative lexical analysis to clarify the meanings associated with idioms, as well as the underlying linguistic systems and statistical trends governing their usage. By adopting a macro-level and dynamic perspective, this approach provides new insights into the relationship between language culture and idioms, yielding significant findings compared to previous studies

    Creative Collaboration in Urban Polder in Jakarta, in the Framework of Integrated Water Management

    The urbanisations in developing countries had happened rapidly since 20th Century. The Coastal Cities were affected due to unplanned and uncontrolled developments which encroaching the rural and lowlands. And because of these unsustainable developments, many environmental issues happened to the cities such as floods. Floods were contributed by insufficient infrastructure for flood prevention and flood mitigation, unmanaged infrastructure and climate change. Understanding these facts, we believe that Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) is actually needed to be implemented to solve these problems. It could be defined as “A process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.” In this case, IWRM actually comprises the efforts of controlling the land use change and urban surface run-off; drainage planning and management; landscape design; and infrastructure provisions, which conducted simultaneously. We concluded that to conduct successful IWRM, creative collaboration among Urban Planning Authority and Drainage Management Authority is compulsory. In the urban’ low-lying lands like Jakarta, extra flood prevention and mitigation efforts are needed. A polder system is needed as is appropriate and effective for flood control. The polder is required to be managed as integrated drainage system consisting dikes, drains, retention ponds, outfall structures or pumping stations. Further, designed landscape in the polder is required to ensure its effectiveness. Polder dikes also must be planned and designed considering potential of social conflict and accessibility issue. Lastly, maintenance of infrastructures becomes a critical point for successful polder operation. The Polder system also could not be planned separately from macro spatial plan, urban design and water management of the macro (river basin) system. Understanding this, we believed that creative collaboration in the Integrated Water Management especially in Polder System should be joined by Government, the People and the Private sector. This will eventually ensure the sustainable development of urban lowland areas

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     AbstractThe relationship between land use and water quality status is complex and likely to be site-specific, and more work is needed for it to be clearly quantified. Theref National Cheng Kung University, No 1 University Road, Tainan 701ore, the main objective of this paper was thus to identify and investigate status of waterbodies (lakes and rivers) by using appropriate predictive index assessment tool coupled with the offered Adaptive Co-Management (ACM) methodology towards sustainability of water quality and ecology in Indonesia. We then present a comprehensive assessment as baseline information to describe the existing condition of waterbody status in study area. The results indicated that the basic requirements of predictive index assessment tool, expressed as indicator: criteria and attributes, are use-specific or targeted to the protection of the watershed and waterbodies uses among a number of land use policies. In some situations, even stricter requirements and policies are necessary to achieve sustainability of water quality and ecology in Indonesia

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Static and dynamic story shear in split-level building on sloping ground

    Building structures located on slopes behave differently than structures located on flat ground because of the different levels of stepped floors made to overcome the slope of the land, resulting in several layers of basements. Also, due to the existence of these steps and the difference in soil level, a retaining wall is often made to hold the soil. The forces acting on the structure consist of those acting on the structure and those acting on the retaining walls, both against gravity loads and against earthquake loads. Often, there is an avalanche force due to the stability of the slopes. The main objective of this research is to: evaluate the distribution of story-shear forces based on a static and dynamic analysis of building structures. This paper discusses the structure of a seven-story building with stepped floors, which is then used to calculate a similar structure with 14 levels. In this case study, the load due to lateral earth pressure is calculated separately from the building structure with the assumption that the retaining wall (soldier-pile) can carry the lateral earth pressure as well as overcome sliding due to slope stability. Therefore, the building structure can be designed separately without considering the presence of lateral forces due to differences in soil levels. In conclusion, the results of the static and dynamic analysis showed the distribution of the story-shear forces from the first to seventh floors as smaller than those of the eighth floor
