The Use of Scholarly Electronic Journals at the Indian Institute of Science: A Case Study in India

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of scholarly electronic journals at the Indian Institute of Science. The paper examines the methodology and results from a questionnaire-based survey of networked electronic services in India at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) libraries serving a variety of disciplines. A random sample of the main cohort was selected and during five months from January 2004 till May 2004, 700 copies of the questionnaire were distributed among forty departments of IISc; 397 completed and valid questionnaires (56.7 percent) were received. The results showed a growing interest in electronic journals among the users at the IISc. The electronic journals were mostly used for research needs and PDF format was the most preferred format. The fact that users have free access to electronic journals at all hours from their own computers seems to be the most appealing feature

Efficient pricing of barrier options with the variance-gamma model

    No full text
We develop an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm for pricing barrier options with the variance gamma model [fMAD98a]. After generalizing the double-gamma bridge sampling algorithm of [fAVR03a], we develop conditional bounds on the process paths and exploit these bounds toprice barrier options. The algorithm's efficiency stems from sampling the process paths up to a random resolution that is usually much coarser than the original path resolution. We obtain unbiased estimators, including the case of continuous-time monitoring of the barrier crossing. Our numerical examples show large efficiency gain relative to full-dimensional path sampling

    No full text
93-99Studies the reference sources collection, i.e., handbooks & manuals, bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographies, directories, yearbooks & almanacs, geographical sources, indexing & abstracting sources in seven university libraries of Karnataka. Among seven universities included for the study, the Mangalore University Library has rich collection of reference sources. Among the reference collection, dictionaries and encyclopedias are more in number as against geographical sources of information and directories in university libraries. The study also gives a comparative analysis of reference collection in university libraries with its number of users. Finds that there is a need to strengthen the collection of almanacs, maps and atlases, gazetteers, indexing, abstracting and statistical sources in all the university libraries under study particularly, the handbooks and yearbooks collection in Bangalore University Library and statistical sources in Karnatak University Library. Almnacs and abstracting sources collection in Kannada University Library has to be initiated

103-116Investigates the use of reference sources, i.e., bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, year books & almanacs, geographical sources and handbooks through a questionnaire-based survey in seven university libraries of Karnataka. Results show an upward interest in reference sources among the users in university libraries. Dictionaries and encyclopedias are found tobe the most used reference sources and geographical sources and directories are used less. Factors that may affect the use of reference sources are also discussed

Literary Portrait of V.G. Shershenevich in the Works of Barnaul Writers

    No full text
Imaginist poet V.G. Shershenevich died and was buried in 1942 in Barnaul. The fact of the death and burial of the capital’s author in a provincial town has become a landmark event for regional self-identification, and initiated a particular thematic line in local history and fiction. For the first time the article reveals the image of V.G. Shershenevich, which was developed in the work of Barnaul writers. The analysis of poetic and prose texts shows how the reconstruction of the last days of the poet’s life fits him into the urban landscape, how the grave becomes a semantically productive element of the locus. The basic motifs that model the image of the writer are associated with the change of poles of the oppositions “center — periphery,” “glory — oblivion,” “friend — alien (foreign),” “genius – mediocrity,” “friendship — enmity” with S.A. Yesenin. Literary portrait of Shershenevich comes from the synthesis of the features of his poetics, aesthetic attitudes, life events and the realities of the city. Altai writers tend to project literary and historical facts related to the imagist onto their own work and destiny. There is a tendency to turn the poet into a genius loci

Library Consortia in Developing Countries: An Overview

    No full text
“Library consortia” refers to co-operation, co-ordination and collaboration between, and among, libraries for the purpose of sharing information resources. The purpose of this paper is to review consortia efforts in developing countries. The paper reviews the literature on library consortia in developing countries in general and India in particular. It also outlines the advantages and disadvantages of consortia. The literature review reveals that libraries in developing countries have been working on consortia at national, regional and international level. However, some barriers such as poor technological and communication infrastructure, inadequate finances, culture and context, attitudes toward consortia and multiple efforts are reported to be limitations of consortia activities in developing countries
