Navigating Excellence in Philippine Tertiary Physical Education: Insights and Suggestions of Grassroots Teachers Towards an Improved PATH-Fit Implementation
This research investigates the insights and suggestions of teachers in implementing the reformed Physical Education (PE) program in the Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEI) called "Physical Activity Towards Health and Fitness" (PATH-Fit). Employing a qualitative descriptiveapproach, 14 participants were purposefully selected as the primary source of data. The main data-gathering tool was a series of in-depth interviews complemented by expert-validated guide questions. The study revealed six essential themes: the demand for continuous retooling activities, the prioritization of facilities and equipment, the amplification of PE’s significance, the call to reduce paper and pen activities, the importance of seniors’ support and guidance, and the need for clear learning references. These themes underscore the complex opportunities in implementing PATH-Fit, and it suggest that investing in continuous professional development, optimizing learningenvironments, and refining teaching approaches are crucial for the success of PE in higher education. The findings of this study contribute to an understanding of PATH-Fit implementation, which has implications for educators, administrators, and policymakers seeking to enhance the quality and effectiveness of PE in higher education programs in the country
Back to in-person classes in the Philippine basic education: threading the opportunities and limitations in the teaching of Physical Education
Two years after face-to-face classes were suspended in the Philippines due to the threat of COVID-19, the Department of Education is implementing the progressive expansion of limited in-person learning. More schools are expected to hold limited face-to-face classes as the government revises its School Safety Assessment Tool, which has streamlined the requirements for the conduct of in-person class sessions. With the push to get education back into schools, it is essential to look into the opportunities and limitations in teaching Physical Education. Using a qualitative descriptive phenomenological research design, 34 Physical Education Teachers teaching in the Philippine Basic Education took part in several in-depth interviews. During the triangulation of results, seven important themes on teachers’ concerns came up: Students are demotivated to go to face-to-face classes, students are misbehaving and doing inappropriate learning actions, classroom settings need to be modified to follow standard health protocols, teaching strategies and learning activities need to be retrofitted, teachers' and students' performances are affected by the protective gear they have to wear all the time, and there is a worry that COVID may surge again. Based on these results, the government should look into these factors because these will have a significant effect on the implementation of face-to-face classes in the Philippines. The results of this study were used to come up with valuable conclusions and suggestions.
Experiences, Motivation, Commitment, and Suggestions of Physical Education Teachers Amidst COVID-19 Crisis
At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and administrators were caught off guard by the suddenness of this situation and were obliged to construct emergency remote learning systems immediately. With the problems identified in various literature, this research was conducted to elicit teachers\u27 experiences, motivation, commitment, and suggestions as they implement physical education amidst the pandemic. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, this study delved deeper into the experiences of twenty senior high school teachers from selected schools in Cotabato Province in the Philippines using in-depth interviews. During the triangulation of results, this study identified that limited resources for students and technological gaps among teachers posed obstacles to quality learning. However, teachers demonstrated optimism in acquiring new skills and adapting innovative technological strategies to facilitate distance education. Collaborative efforts with colleagues proved instrumental in problem-solving, and teachers viewed their negative experiences as opportunities for personal and professional growth. The findings were then used to develop conclusions and recommendations for better implementing physical education in the Philippine senior high school curriculum
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Gen Zs are different from older generations because they are the first consumers to have grown up wholly in the digital era. They\u27re tech-savvy and mobile-first—and they have high standards for how they spend their time online. Scholars have identified a decreasing involvement of Gen Zs in sports and recreation. This problem was worsened by the huge influence of social media and other platforms, which made them get distracted and lose interest in sports and recreation. Some scholars revealed few explanations on this problem; however, there is no concrete evidence scrutinizing the reasons behind this phenomenon to the generation z students. Hence, this study was conducted primarily to investigate the demotivating reasons of generation z students\u27 gradual dislike of sports and recreation. Using a phenomenology approach, gen zs in Southern Philippines who are identified as not interested in sports and recreation served as primary participants of this study. The triangulation of results revealed six significant concerns from research participants. These include the inadequate childhood exposure to sports and recreation, influence of technological advancements, reduced physical interaction due to the pandemic, and health difficulties. The data were then used to generate conclusions and recommendations to help generation z students boost their interests to participate in sports and recreational activities.
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The Philippine education system is currently under transition due to the implementation of Republic Act 10533, also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act. Since its enactment in 2013, physical education researchers have been examining the initial impact of this transition. Yet, investigations to determine teachers\u27 challenges in the sports Track Program of the senior high school curriculum were barely sufficient. Hence, this research was conducted to probe the challenges of these teachers using a qualitative phenomenology research design. Research participants from selected schools in the Cotabato Province in the Philippines were involved in focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and extensive field observation. Six significant concerns from the research participants transpired; these are difficulties with online learning, mismatched of students’ interests; unrealistic curriculum; inadequate facilities; overloaded teaching loads; and struggles of non-physical education graduates. The findings then served as crucial elements in drawing conclusions and recommendations to better implement the sports track program in the Philippine senior high school curriculum.
Gen Z’s Fitness Concepts and Ways to be Fit: Insights to Strengthen Students’ Learning Experiences in Tertiary Physical Education
Being dubbed as digital natives born and raised in the highly industrial era, generation z students
differ from previous generations. A recent study revealed an increasing number of dropped-out
students in physical education classes in one of the leading State Universities in the Philippines.
Several reasons have been revealed, and one of those is the current tertiary physical education
curriculum content. Hence, this study aimed to determine the fitness concepts and ways to stay fit of
generation Z students and utilize in enhancing the curriculum content and improve the students’
learning experiences in tertiary physical education. Using the descriptive phenomenology research
design, 95 research participants took part in focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and
unobtrusive participant observations. The findings of this inquiry indicated three (3) reasons why
generation Z students still perceive physical education as an essential course in schools (gadget
addiction; early childhood diseases; and stress release) and six (6) ways to stay healthy (exercise and
physical activities; balanced diet; enough sleep/rest; self-discipline; and use of technology to promote
fitness). The findings and conclusions served as critical components in strengthening the tertiary
physical education curriculum to tailor the learning experiences to generation Z students' concepts,
ways, and preferences
