A genre in decline? : Teo Chew opera in Western Sydney

    No full text
Located in the heart of Western Sydney, the Australian Chinese Teo Chew Association (ACTCA) is a meeting place for diasporic Chinese hailing from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mainland China and other Southeast Asian countries. Their common link is the Teo Chew/Chaozhou language and culture, which originates in the locality of Teo Swa/Chaoshan in present-day Guangdong Province. Since the late 1990s, Sydney-siders of Teo Chew descent have gathered regularly to celebrate a common ethno-specific identity. In a large Chinese-style building complete with a traditional archway, community members partake in activities such as karaoke nights, ballroom dancing classes, kung fu and lion dance training, chess tournaments, and most significantly, Teo Chew opera. Arias and instrumental suites from various operatic classics are rehearsed on a weekly basis by a core group of predominantly elderly musicians. They are joined by professional artists invited from mainland China in large-scale productions hosted annually by the association. Although most synonymous with Teo Chew culture and seemingly popular in other diasporic communities, this classical art form is steadily losing currency, particularly amongst the younger Teo Chew population. Despite local patronage, it seems likely that the genre will survive for only as long as the current exponents are able to sustain it. This paper draws on fieldwork conducted from 2004 to address issues of language, transmission and other factors contributing to the gradual decline of Teo Chew opera in Western Sydney. Possible methods for sustainability are also discussed, with a case study involving Sydney Conservatorium's Chinese Music Ensemble

This research presents a reading of the aspects of religious transidentalism in presenting the narrative of environmental preservation. Certainly in that context, the author tries to illustrate with teo-ecology construction based on quranic insights. Therefore, man as a subject, occupies a wide space in realizing the idea of godliness and humanistics in managing the nature and environment that God has given. Result of this study provides a major argument against the meaning of the Quran as the basis of environmental Teo-Ecology which contributes the deepest contribution, so that environmental preservation is always encouraged. In addition, in environmental preservation is necessary also the construction of ecological ethics humanizes the environment itself, so that a balance arises there. Lastly, it is no less important to elicit an attitude of transcendentalism in man that as god's representative on Earth must have mentally managed the environment well

This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Hydrothermal synthesis of Ni₃TeO₆ and Cu₃TeO₆ nanostructures for magnetic and photoconductivity applications

Abstract Despite great attention toward transition metal tellurates especially M₃TeO₆ (M = transition metal) in magnetoelectric applications, control on single phasic morphology-oriented growth of these tellurates at the nanoscale is still missing. Herein, a hydrothermal synthesis is performed to synthesize single-phased nanocrystals of two metal tellurates, i.e., Ni₃TeO₆ (NTO with average particle size ∼37 nm) and Cu₃TeO₆ (CTO ∼ 140 nm), using NaOH as an additive. This method favors the synthesis of pure NTO and CTO nanoparticles without the incorporation of Na at pH = 7 in MTO crystal structures such as Na₂M₂TeO₆, as it happens in conventional synthesis approaches such as solid-state reaction and/or coprecipitation. Systematic characterization techniques utilizing in-house and synchrotron-based characterization methods for the morphological, structural, electronic, magnetic, and photoconductivity properties of nanomaterials showed the absence of Na in individual particulate single-phase MTO nanocrystals. Prepared MTO nanocrystals also exhibit slightly higher antiferromagnetic interactions (e.g., TN-NTO = 57 K and TN-CTO = 68 K) compared to previously reported MTO single crystals. Interestingly, NTO and CTO show not only a semiconducting nature but also photoconductivity. The proposed design scheme opens the door to any metal tellurates for controllable synthesis toward different applications. Moreover, the photoconductivity results of MTO nanomaterials prepared serve as a preliminary proof of concept for potential application as photodetectors

This report is a bachelor thesis created for the Technology Center as a part of the Software Engineering and Management programme at the IT University of Göteborg. The report deals with the problem of security issues in organizations with wast amounts of data. The question at issue asked what could be done to increase information security for the Technology Center at the IT University of Göteborg. While solving the problem the report presents the Technology Center and what their ITresources is and why they should be secured. The author describes the method used to gather data that was used in a risk assessment and analysis. The next part in the authors struggle to increase information security was to create an information security policy. The policy is a document that all members and users of the Technology Center should read and follow as it has rules and guidelines that can help the organization minimize the risks found in the analysis. The author recommends that the organization as future research creates more formal supporting policies that focus more on a single subject like network- or user management

Within the format of a critical exegesis and four original works of extended prose fiction, this thesis explores the interaction between the author and reader and argues that literary meaning is the outcome of shifts of power between these two entities. It concludes that because these shifts in power are orchestrated by the author, the author is relevant to understanding how meaning is produced
