The evolution of a steel plant and its impact on the social context: the case of Taranto

Taranto, from its establishment to the present. While initially a synonym of assured
development, the plant's presence has led to profound social, environmental, and
economic repercussions, particularly following its privatization. This study emphasizes
the social consequences, examining how the factory has altered Taranto's identity,
community dynamics, and labour rights. Through a historical analysis of the plant's
development, the research considers a broad range of sources, from official documents
and case law to union records and media reports, supplemented by first-hand interviews
with local stakeholders. Structured across three main chapters, the thesis traces the plant's
trajectory from its founding to the critical turning point of 2012, when the plant's partial
seizure brought heightened scrutiny and societal division. The concluding analysis
provides insights into the ongoing struggles within Taranto's community and perspectives
on its uncertain future, ultimately aiming to give voice to the workers and social
