Self-care, balance and the IB learner profile
Anecdotal evidence suggests that educators tend to expend themselves for their students with little thought for themselves, often leading to excessive stress, work-related illness, burnout, and attrition. The following discussion adapted from Self-Care for Teachers (Allen, 2013) reviews the international research on this topic and proposes an alternative approach. The research not only confirms this persistent pattern of excessive stress, overwork, and illness but also confirms educators’ typical inattention to their own needs. Conventional approaches to the problem of excessive stress, overwork and its attendant maladies focus on the external: management strategies such as induction and mentoring programs, salary incentives, or more recently, teacher help lines and wellness programs. The author advocates a more balanced approach, looking inward as well as outward for solutions to this perplexing problem. Although balance is often conceived as a static ideal of symmetry and proportion, it may be best understood–especially in an educational context– as the practical dynamic process of “moving artfully between extremes”, a definition which might equally apply to classroom management, curriculum design, assessment strategies, professional development, prevalent attitudes, and work-life rhythm

Rigidity of Automorphic Galois Representations over CM Fields
We show the vanishing of adjoint Bloch-Kato Selmer groups of automorphic Galois representations over CM fields. This proves their rigidity in the sense that they have no deformations which are de Rham. In order for this to make sense we also prove that automorphic Galois representations over CM fields are de Rham themselves. Our methods draw heavily from the 10 author paper, where these Galois representations were studied extensively. Another crucial piece of inspiration comes from the work of P. Allen who used the smoothness of certain local deformation rings in characteristic 0 to obtain rigidity in the polarized case.minor fixes, published versio
New Role for an Old Protein: An Educational Primer for Use with “The Identification of a Novel Mutant Allele of topoisomerase II in Caenorhabditis elegans Reveals a Unique Role in Chromosome Segregation During Spermatogenesis”
Abstract
Modern experimental techniques, such as whole-genome sequencing and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 endogenous genome editing, are enabling researchers to identify and further characterize the roles of proteins that were previously thought of as well defined. In the December 2016 issue of GENETICS, an article by Jaramillo-Lambert et al. identified a new role for the enzyme topoisomerase II in Caenorhabditis elegans male meiosis. This Primer article is designed to provide essential background information on C. elegans spermatogenesis and the relevant scientific techniques that will assist students and instructors in their understanding and discussion of the related article.

Governance, regulation and financial market instability: the implications for policy
Just as the 1929 Stock Market Crash discredited Classical economic theory and policy and opened the way for Keynesianism, a consequence of the collapse of confidence in financial markets and the banking system—and the effect that this has had on the global macro economy—is currently discrediting the ‘conventional wisdom’ of neo-liberalism. This paper argues that at the heart of the crisis is a breakdown in governance that has its roots in the co-evolution of political and economic developments and of economic theory and policy since the 1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression that followed. However, while many are looking back to the Great Depression and to the theories and policies that seemed to contribute to recovery during the first part of the twentieth century, we argue that the current context is different from the earlier one; and there are more recent events that may provide better insight into the causes and contributing factors giving rise to the present crisis and to the implications for theory and policy that follow
Those Left Behind: Heidegger on Grief and Mourning
In Being and Time Martin Heidegger explores the role that death plays in our lives and consequently the impact that the death of others has on the lives of those around them. Since Heidegger understands our existence to be structured by our being toward death and our being in the world with others, the impact of death on society will inevitably play a significant role. In this thesis I investigate the disconnect that exists between the traditional literature on death and mourning as developed by theorists like Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and others and the experiences of mourners themselves. I argue that the disconnect that exists points to and deep seated confusion about the death of the self and the death of others I identify some of the striking commonalities in the experiences of mourners and the lack of recognition of these experiences in the traditional literature. I also examine the role of traditional mourning practices and the impact they have on the mourners experience. I maintain that collectively we are profoundly confused about how to deal with the deaths of others, and the lack of modern western mourning practices is evidence of this. However, I believe that individually, we have some understanding of how to approach the death of another, and that this becomes evident when we are forced to experience this loss. I argue that a Heideggerian understanding of death and mourning more accurately represents the experience of the death of others and, if endorsed, would allow for a more personal experience of mourning because of Heidegger’s unique understanding of the role death plays in our lives and the significance of other people in our lives.Master of Arts (MA
