The recollections of Prof. W. Dobrowolski focus mainly on his activity at the National Museum in Warsaw (1960–2011) and his scholarly accomplishments. The creator of modern Etruscology in Poland in the 1960s, he contributed greatly to promoting knowledge of Etruscan civilization among Polish society. He won his international fame with the documentation of Etruscan tombs and their painterly decoration in the modern period. Furthermore, W. Dobrowolski was an unquestioned expert in Greek pottery, particularly from the Vilnius and Gołuchów collections kept at the National Museum in Warsaw, and was capable of applying his deepened iconographic analyses to museum displays. His passion being Greek art as a universal and topical model for artistic and esthetical values, he was greatly committed to promoting ancient art in Poland as an organizer of several dozen exhibitions at local museums, author of numerous encyclopaedic entries and chapters in art history textbooks. Moreover, he authored and curated some big and important exhibitions at the National Museum in Warsaw, where he also had a significant impact on the permanent Ancient Art Gallery which existed until 2011. Dobrowolski’s studies in Polish collecting of ancient historical pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries paved him the way to important analyses of the presence of the Antiquity in European and Polish culture that were the academic focus in the last period of his life.Wspomnienie o prof. Studia nad polskim kolekcjonerstwem zabytków antycznych w XVIII i XIX w. utorowały mu drogę do ważnych analiz obecności tradycji antyku w kulturze europejskiej i polskiej, które szczególnie go zajmowały w ostatnim okresie życia

The Fall by Albert Camus and Rise of Jacek Dobrowolski

    No full text
The Rise and the Fall of the Modern Man is an excellent philosophical essay written by Jacek Dobrowolski. The author – which is contemporary, existential nihilist with pretensions to a minimum of compassion-morality – tracks the development of the idea of the modern subjectivity, swinging between literature and philosophy. He mastered the rare art of concise updates of momentous philosophical issues, by which he refers in hedge-hopping vivacious style. The review notes the advantages (and shortcomings) of the essay, exposing the main focal points present in its insightful narration developed from disenchanted antiquity to the exhausted post-modernity

After many years as a student of Zen teacher Philip Kapleau, Toni Packer gaveup being co-leader of his Zen Center in Rochester, NY, and in 1981 founded a city center there, and later a country center in Springwater, NY. Interviewed in July 1986 by Jacek Dobrowolski, a Zen student and scholar from Warsaw, Toni is author of "Seeing Without Knowing." The Springwater Center has a staff of 12 and over 200 members around the country. Jacek, a resident of Cambridge Zen Center, is starting graduate studies in comparative religion at Harvard University. Due to space limitations, we are unable to print the interview in full. An expanded version of it will be published in Toni's forthcoming book, "The Work of This Moment." Toni's statements do not necessarily reflect the teachings of the Kwan Um Zen School. However, they are provocative and we invite our readers to commen

A DOBROWOLSKI-TYPE INEQUALITY FOR THE POLES OF THE DYNAMICAL ZETA FUNTION OF THE BETA-SHIFT

The poles of the dynamical zeta function of the β-shift in the open unit disk in C are investigated, when β > 1 is a real number close to 1 and tends to 1. We show that to β is associated an integer, called dynamical degree of β , and that two types of poles can be characterized as a function of dyg(β): the lenticular poles and the other poles in a narrow annular neighbourhood of the unit circle. From the lenticulus of lenticular poles we show that we can construct a lenticular measure associated to it. Its definition is mimicked on that of the Mahler measure, and both are related. We prove that this lenticular measure admits a lower bound, when dyg(β) is large enough, as a function of dyg(β), which is an analogue of the inequality of Dobrowolski relative to the Mahler measure of algebraic integers. This Dobrowolski-type inequality generalizes a previous one obtained by the author on the Mahler measure of the trinomials −1 + x + x^n for n large enough

The article focuses on the analysis of symbols and allegories in the portraits of Lviv painter Odo Dobrowolski. The author offers an innovative approach to his works by inscribing his endeavors into a broad European context and by interpreting Dobrowolski as a self-contained topic worthy of a monographic research. The main emphasis of the article is on the symbols and allegories of time which Dobrowolski used in his portraiture. The author establishes a direct link between the iconographic structure of Dobrowolski's self-portraits and the European tradition of representation of time and death, particularly popular at the turn of the nineteenth century

This article contains a description of an author's artistic research/project consisting in the development of movement interpretations of compositions by C. Debussy, J. Cage, K. Penderecki, W. Szalonek, A. Dobrowolski, K. Olczak, and T. Kaiser, in which the musical tone and colour are depicted with the means of movement arranged in space. The recording of the project performance was made at the Concert Hall of the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. The performers were the students in the special area of Eurhythmics at the faculty of Choral Conducting, Musical Education and Eurhythmics, the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. This research was undertook for the purpose of doctoral theses and had as its background the author's many years of professional experience in creating musical choreography and her exploration of tone. Selected musical works were interpreted and expressed by movement of the human body. In addition, movement interpretations become here an instrument to comment on sound events, amplifying the recipient’s impressions of sound, which constitute a part of the Dalcroze method of musical education. Accordingly, the implication of the research is that it does not only introduce the issue of Eurhythmics but also prepares the recipient for new, seemingly broader perception of the musical work. Tone still remains for the author an extremely inspirational issue open for further exploration
