Elusive presence. Film and new media in a new core curriculum of public education
The author of the article analyses the current situation of the film and other media in the contemporary core curriculum of public education. The definition of film education, established in the document, is presented on the basis of the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author uses a broad perspective in order to provide the reader with a comprehensible description that includes various aspects of the current situation.
The article begins with the analysis of the core curriculum for lower primary schools and moves on to the upper primary schools focusing on the details of teaching Polish. Then,
the author concentrates on the core curriculum for high schools and art classes for all levels showing that the established model of film education is scattered and chaotic. It seems more of a case of an incidental arrangement rather than a deliberate and thought-out planning as there is no proper project of film education as a school subject. That is why, the author of the article uses the term elusive when referring to film education. Another reason for that is the fact that film education as a subject focuses on the usage of ICT. However, media literacy and film education should be perceived as components of cultural education. Films should be discussed and analyzed in a similar way to literature
The forgotten page. On the Introduction of Film Education to Polish School
The article The forgotten page. On the introduction of film education to Polish schools raises a subject of film education in Polish schools. At the beginning of the article the author focuses on the groundbreaking school curriculum introduced to Polish schools in 2009. The teachers of Polish have had to include the elements of film education within their course since then. At the same time Polish Film Institute provided fourteen thousand schools with the packages of film materials. It was supposed to support film education in schools. The initiative was warmly approved by the press and various media. Nonetheless, it was not the first initiative of this kind in Poland as similar programme was introduced to schools in the 1930s by Film Institute of Polish Telegraphic Agency. The article is devoted to the description of this forgotten period of Polish education, which was terminated by the outbreak of World War II
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Jagna jako postać potencjalna. O Chłopach Doroty Kobieli Welchman i Hugh Welchmana
The article concerns the 2023 adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s Chłopi. The text presents the consequences of the truncation of the problematic character of Jagna, a peasant heroine whose legal and human status in the rural hierarchy was completely defined by the patriarchal system. Analysing the plot and form of the film, the author points to the simplification of the realities of rural community at the time, which squandered the opportunity to trigger a social amnesia of folk origins in the audience. The story contained in Reymont’s work has performative potential; it can be a kind of contemporary intervention. However, Jagna, as a film character, does not create a potential history (in the sense that Ariella Azolay assigned to the notion), but becomes a Polish icon of popfeminism, used as a deliberate marketing trick to influence the attractiveness of the film image and its sales. An appeal further reinforced by references to the paintings of Józef Chełmoński, which were paradoxically deprived of their emancipatory dimension.Artykuł dotyczy adaptacji Chłopów Władysława Reymonta DK i Hugh Welchmanów.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The article describes the Polish Pavilion at the Biennale Arte (2022), where, due to the works of Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, the “re-enchantment” of Romani people history took place. At the exhibition, the artist representing Poland presented the alternative history of the Romani or – using Ariella A. Azoulay’s term – “potential” history. The author of the article examines how Mirga-Tas implements the idea of community, while making space for the individual. The artist, without any Romani representations, created her own graphic fantasy, rejecting historical testimonies; the fantasy presented in the text as an identity attempt and the creation of a collective self-portrait at the same time. In the second part of the article, the author inquires if the concept of “re-enchantment” can be used in didactics of the Polish language and reflects on the question of how to emancipate Romani culture at school in order to work through the one-dimensional image of the Romani described as the Other of Europe. The essence of re-enchantment lies in repairing what has been damaged by violence or prejudice.W artykule opisano Pawilon Polski na Biennale w Wenecji (2022), na którym za pośrednictwem prac Małgorzaty Mirgi-Tas dokonało się tytułowe „przeczarowanie” historii Romów.
What Kind of Value is Nation? Contemplating and Discussing Kamil Polak’s “The Birth of a Nation”
In the article, the author presents the nation as an ethnic, cultural as well as political group. Also, the author’s experience of workshops for adolescents conducted at the University of Gdansk is described. The starting point for the meetings was the etude The Birth of a Nation (Pol. Narodziny narodu) by Kamil Polak, a minimalistic animation about the rise and the fall of a certain nation. The proposed model of the etude starts with a universal story based on the impersonal metaphor of the circle and it continues to the students’ “here and now”, revealing the axiological dilemmas of the young recipients of culture. Not only the views of students regarding the issue of nationality are presented in the article, but also it reveals how this knowledge is constructed
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
