By applying the corruption framework suggested by Gaviria (2002), this dissertation examines whether perceived corruption measures such as Institutional Quality/Law Enforcement (IQLE) and Internal Compliance and Ethical Management (ICEM) moderate the relationship between CSR and firm performance. The results showed that there is a negative moderating impact of IQLE on a positive relationship between CSR and firm’s financial performance. This study also found that ICEM as a moderator contributed to strengthening the positive relationship between CSR and firm’s financial performance

    Forecasting selectivity of Au-based partial oxidation catalysts via temperature programmed desorption studies on the Au(111) model catalyst

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 81-86).Gold-based heterogeneous catalysts have attracted significant attention due to their selective partial oxidation capabilities which are comparable to that of the industrial homogeneous benchmark catalysts. In the current study, a planar Au(111) single crystal model catalyst surface was utilized to understand the behavior of different organic compounds (alcohols, aldehydes, esters etc.) in conjunction to the partial oxidation reactions. Stability of different organic compounds were investigated on the Clean Au(III) surface. The stability of a particular organic compound on the Au(III) model catalyst surface was found to be closely related to the variety of generated products. Surface sensitive analytical techniques such as Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) were used to investigate the interaction of organic compounds with the clean Au(111) single crystal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. Organic compounds were dosed onto atomically clean Au(III) surfaces at the liquid nitrogen temperature. All organic compounds desorbed non-dissociatively on the clean Au(111) surface. All organic compounds reveal monolayer and multilayer desorption signals but in the case of aldehydes, desorption is quite different, as they lead to polymerization on the surface with high desorption temperatures. Zeroth order desorption kinetics was observed for multilayers, while 1st order desorption was seen for the monolayer. In most cases, the multilayer feature can be observed with two distinct desorption peaks associated with amorphous and crystalline phases. In this work, it is confirmed that majority of the studied compounds have relatively low adsorption energies on Au(111). The species with lower desorption energies on Au(111) tend to undergo partial oxidation rather than total oxidation. Thus, desorption energy appears as an important descriptor for predicting the extent of oxidation in partial/total oxidation in oxidative coupling reactions.by Shah, Syed Asad Ali

    The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: A Study of Security Decisions in a Cyber-Physical Systems Game

    Stakeholders&amp;#x0027; security decisions play a fundamental role in determining security requirements, yet, little is currently understood about how different stakeholder groups within an organisation approach security and the drivers and tacit biases underpinning their decisions. We studied and contrasted the security decisions of three demographics -- security experts, computer scientists and managers -- when playing a tabletop game that we designed and developed. The game tasks players with managing the security of a cyber-physical environment while facing various threats. Analysis of 12 groups of players (4 groups in each of our demographics) reveals strategies that repeat in particular demographics, e.g., managers and security experts generally favoring technological solutions over personnel training, which computer scientists preferred. Surprisingly, security experts were not ipso facto better players -- in some cases, they made very questionable decisions -- yet they showed a higher level of confidence in themselves. We classified players&amp;#x0027; decision-making processes, i.e., procedure-, experience-, scenario- or intuition-driven. We identified decision patterns, both good practices and typical errors and pitfalls. Our game provides a requirements sandbox in which players can experiment with security risks, learn about decision-making and its consequences, and reflect on their own perception of security.</p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Synthesis of a Nickel Single-Atom Catalyst Based on Ni-N4-xCx Active Sites for Highly Efficient CO2 Reduction Utilizing a Gas Diffusion Electrode

    A Ni single-atom catalyst with N-N4-xCx active sites is prepared in a single pyrolysis step in which the Ni single atom is incorporated in the carbon framework through nitrogen and carbon coordination utilizing the ionothermal synthesis method. In comparison to the complicated synthesis procedures of single-atom catalysts, this method provides a general and facile method to obtain single-atom catalysts with an opportunity to synthesize catalysts at a large scale. The precursors used in this method such as adenine, fructose, and glucose are derived from the biomass which is the essential requirement for a green process. The synthetic procedure developed here enables tunable properties of the catalysts, such as the density of active sites and characteristics of the carbon framework. In this study, the catalytic properties of our materials are investigated for an electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. The overall catalytic activity of the catalyst depends on the density of active sites, but the properties of the carbon framework also affect the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. From the commercial prospect, a Ni single-atom catalyst with a high density of N -N4-xCx active sites can achieve a current density of -300 mA cm(-2) with a CO faradaic efficiency of 99.4% at an overpotential of 235 mV in a gas diffusion electrode cell system.

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
