Author survey data reveals changing perceptions of scholarly communication and wider participation in open access.
Dan Penny, Head of Insights at Nature Publishing Group and Palgrave Macmillan, shares findings from the recent Author Insights Survey. The survey data is openly available and offers an extensive look into researcher perceptions and understandings of academic publishing. Few researchers are now unaware of open access. But perceptions of quality still remain a significant barrier to further OA involvement
Personality, genre and videogame play experience
This study explored relationships between personality, videogame preference and gaming experiences. Four hundred and sixty-six participants completed an online survey in which they recalled a recent gaming experience, and provided measures of personality and their gaming experience via the Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ). Relationships between game genre, personality and gaming experience were found. Results are interpreted with reference to possible implications for a positive impact on wellbeing of videogame play and possible means of improving the breadth of appeal of specific genres
Penny and Her Marble
One day, Penny finds a marble in Mrs. Goodwin’s lawn. No one is watching, so she takes it and races home. Penny loves how smooth, shiny, and blue the marble is. She hides it in her dresser drawer. Penny see Mrs. Goodwin looking around on her lawn and is worried. Penny can\u27t stop thinking about the marble she took. Penny is so distracted and nervous that nothing is fun anymore. She even dreams about Mrs. Goodwin and the marble! In the morning, Penny decides to return the marble to its spot. When she does, Mrs. Goodwin comes out to tell Penny that she had found the marble in her garden and left it there on the grass hoping that Penny would pick it up. Finally, Penny is back to her normal self again, happy and using her imagination. Penny and Her Marble is the third book in the Penny series by best-selling author, Kevin Henkes. This book is perfect for beginning readers with its short chapters and simple text. Children can read this book in order, as part of the Penny the Mouse series, or they can read it on its own. Illustrations are included on every page spread. The illustrations never take up the entire page, giving readers just a small glimpse into Penny’s world. Parents and teachers reading this book to small children could easily teach them about honesty, applying Penny’s experience with guilt to a child’s experience. Children will learn that it’s always worth it to be honest and good feelings come when people tell the truth
Interactions of Penny-Shaped Cracks in Three-Dimensional Solids
The interaction of arbitrarily distributed penny-shaped cracks in three-dimensional solids is analyzed in this paper. Using oblate spheroidal coordinates and displacement functions, an analytic method is developed in which the opening and the sliding displacements on each crack surface are taken as the basic unknown functions. The basic unknown functions can be expanded in series of Legendre polynomials with unknown coefficients. Based on superposition technique, a set of governing equations for the unknown coefficients are formulated from the traction free conditions on each crack surface. The boundary collocation procedure and the average method for crack-surface tractions are used for solving the governing equations. The solution can be obtained for quite closely located cracks. Numerical examples are given for several crack problems. By comparing the present results with other existing results, one can conclude that the present method provides a direct and efficient approach to deal with three-dimensional solids containing multiple cracks
Rethinking Gender Inequalities in Organizations
In this thoughtful book, Penny Dick challenges orthodox views of gender inequality. Combining post-structuralist thinking with process ontology, the author presents a novel conceptual approach to rethinking gender inequalities in organizations and management settings.Publishe
Novel Dialogue 1.5: Getting Into Other Worlds: James Robertson with Penny Fielding (JP)
James Robertson, brilliant author of The Testament of Gideon Mack, and University of Edinburgh's top prof. Penny Fielding beam in from their respective corners of Scotland. Extensive reference is made to (John's madly beloved) James Hogg and to Robert Louis Stevenson, especially his Jack-the-Ripperesque Jekyll and Hyde. The violence that underpins slavery, aye, even in Scotland, and even during the enduringly influential Scottish Enlightenment is dredged up, as is the question of feeling implicated in the legacy of an enslaving system. James sketches a generous theory about what and how a novel signifies: it is simply asleep until a reader picks it up and invests imagination into it. Hints are dropped regarding James's newest novel, News of the Dead due for release in May. And, of course, we learn about his writerly treat
Investing in penny stocks
It describes different approaches in analysis and trading strategy of these stocks and regular shares. Potential investors should be aware of higher risk, when they invest in these investment instruments. In the practical part of thesis, the author tries to find the common features of successful titles based on the historical analysis and use these findings to model an investment portfolio. At the end, author quantifies profitability of the investment and level of risk associated with the investment
Penny-shaped crack propagation in spallation of Zr-BMGs
Typical penny-shaped microcracks at their propagating in spallation of Zr-based bulk metallic glass (Zr-BMG) samples were captured by a specially designed plate impact technique. Based on the morphology and stress environment of the microcrack, a damaged zone or propagation zone around the crack tips, similar to the cohesive zone in classical fracture theories, is applied. Especially the scale of such a damaged zone represents a scale of the crack propagation. Its fast propagation would quickly bring a longer crack or cause cracks coalesce to form another longer one. The estimated propagation scales of microcracks are reasonable compared with what occurred in the Zr-BMG samples
Avoiding a meltdown: managing the value of small change
To prevent a shortage of small change, the U.S. Department of the Treasury recently prohibited the melting and exportation of pennies and other coins. The problem arises because pennies and nickels are made of inappropriately expensive material, and there is or soon will be a profit to be made from transferring their content to alternative uses. The author provides a historical context for the problem of small change and discusses possible remediesCoinage
