Sedimentology of the Scoresby Sund, East Greenland
The fjord system of Scoresby Sund on the east coast of Greenland has been the subject of two research cruises by RV Polarstern in 1988 and 1990. Most of the year, the fjord is covered by sea-ice. Sediment input takes place mostly via drifting icebergs during the short summer period. Depending on the distance to glaciers, surface sediments carry varying proportions of coarse ice-rafted debris (IRD). The degree of sediment reworking by scouring icebergs is controlled by the depth of the fjord, with the most intense reworking in areas shallower than about 450 m depth. Both IRD contribution and intensity of sediment scouring clearly control the distribution pattern of benthic organisms
Can we unpack the global in ESE? An introduction
In seeking co-provocateurs for this roundtable, the initial outreach was fuelled by anger regarding the devaluing of social sciences compared to natural sciences and economics (Mendel, 2014) as well as the frustration of seeing poorly designed research by natural scientists studying human behaviour and education without being informed by protocols and best practices developed for such work by the social sciences (Pooley, Mendelsohn & Milner-Gulland, 2014), and ignorance of deep critical explorations of educational and other social processes by sociologists, anthropologists amongst others (Sund & Lysgaard, 2013). However, the initial response provoked an offer to discuss the role of love in environmental and sustainability education research, ESER. While this reply was clearly housed in the same concerns and critique initially expressed, the use of the word “love”, a powerful concept simultaneously simple and complex, drew us to seek a circle of renewal and remembering of life and lives that may have been forgotten at times within ESER.The phrase “all our/my relations” comes from indigenous worldviews and practices of honouring all the people who have come before you as well as the other living beings with whom we share this planet (Kulnieks, Longboat & Young, 2013). This round table discussion will honour all our relations by remembering the current and past practices which take on issues related to motivation rooted in social and cultural patterns, as well as politics of knowledge with complex histories and inequities (Glass, Scott & Price, 2012; Sund & Öhman, 2014). We will respect people and scholarship via three main currents of discussion:The role of love in ESER“Ignored concepts” - Research and extensive discourse that gets ignored when defining questions that assume people are selfish and have never cooperated to protect the commons, or are not politically active (Gaiser, Rijke & Spanning, 2010) uncritical acceptance of people/nature dichotomy, uncritical use of education as transferring information from expert to ignorant.Political dimensions of ESER (postcolonial lens, global inequities, poverty in the “south”)The discussions will flow at the level of and through individuals, but also at infrastructural and conceptual spaces and places. Creative methodologies provide powerful avenues to disrupt imbalances and injustices and take into account issues of representation, legitimation and politics in research as well as communications about research (McKenzie, 2005). Philip Payne (2005) challenges the limitations of textual discourse as a way of knowing; he focuses on “being, doing and becoming a relational, social and ecological ‘self’” (p. 415) and suggests that strong cultural production constrains these qualities. Framing, metaphors and narratives are important for meaning making (Lakoff, 2010) and are particularly important to deconstruct when challenging dominant views that may have been taken as common sense (Stone-Mediatore, 2003), as well as inviting critical reflection on the very story being told. We will use creative juxtapositioning of the currents of discussion in order to evoke deeper insights than may arise from sequential presentations of the three discussion themes (Neilson, 2009). East Greenland Ice Sheet retreat history from Scoresby Sund and Storstrømmen Glacier during the last deglaciation
The lack of geological constraints on past ice-sheet change in marine-based sectors of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) following the Last Glacial Maximum limits our ability to assess (1) the drivers of ice-sheet change, and (2) the performance of ice-sheet models that are benchmarked against the paleo-record of GrIS change. Here, we provide new in situ 10Be surface exposure chronologies of ice-sheet margin retreat from the outer Scoresby Sund and Storstrømmen Glacier regions in eastern and northeastern Greenland, respectively. Ice retreated from Rathbone Island, east of Scoresby Sund, by ∼ 14.1 ka, recording some of the earliest documentations of terrestrial deglaciation in Greenland. The mouth of Scoresby Sund deglaciated by ∼ 13.2 ka, and retreated at an average rate of ∼ 43 m yr−1 between 13.2 and 9.7 ka. Storstrømmen Glacier retreated from the outer coast to within ∼ 3 km of the modern ice margin between ∼ 12.7 and 8.6 ka at an average rate of ∼ 28 m yr−1. Retreat then slowed or reached a stillstand as ice retreated ∼ 3 km between ∼ 8.6 ka to the modern ice margin at ∼ 8.0 ka. These retreat rates are consistent with late glacial and Holocene estimates for marine-terminating outlet glaciers across East Greenland, and comparable to modern retreat rates observed at the largest ice streams in northeastern, and northwestern Greenland.</p
Carbon cycling in an Arctic fjord (Scoresby Sund, East Greenland) with regard to the influence of glacial meltwater discharge
Greenland fjords receive considerable amounts of meltwater discharge from the Greenland Ice Sheet, influencing the physical and biogeochemical conditions within the fjords. Because ice melt will increase with ongoing climate change, research on present-day conditions is urgently needed to make better projections for the future. In the present study, a comprehensive analysis of the carbon cycle in Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system situated at the southeastern coast of Greenland, was conducted.
In summer 2016, Scoresby Sund and its northernmost branch, Nordvestfjord, were visited. While the narrow Nordvestfjord is influenced by numerous marine-terminating glaciers and surface meltwater discharge, the wide Outer Scoresby Sund is much less affected by meltwater. Surface partial pressure of CO2, primary production, particulate organic carbon (POC) flux, and remineralisation within the water column are reported. The data reveal that meltwater significantly influenced the carbon dynamics within the fjord. First, meltwater itself increased the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Second, meltwater limited net community production in Nordvestfjord to 31 - 35 mmol C m-2 d-1 compared to the Outer Scoresby Sund and the shelf (43 - 67 mmol C m-2 d-1) by inhibiting the resupply of nutrients to the surface and by shadowing of silts contained in the meltwater. Finally, the POC flux close to glacier fronts was enhanced due to ballasting by silts, which diminished the remineralisation within the water column and increased the share of organic carbon that reached the sea floor. In Outer Scoresby Sund, by contrast, most remineralisation took place in the upper water column and particle concentrations below were mainly dependent on the present water mass.
This study presents the first findings ever about biogeochemical cycling in Scoresby Sund. The results imply that Greenland fjords should be examined on a regional scale to highlight significant differences in carbon dynamics depending on the degree of meltwater discharge within a single fjord system
