From Dong-fang Shuo to Sun Wu-kong

    No full text
This is a famous episode in the Xi-you-ji 西遊記 that Sun Wu-kong steals peaches from the Queen of the West 西王母, and as you know, originally the thief was Dong-fang Shuo who served under the Emperor Wu 武帝 of the Han 漢 dynasty in history. Taoists said that Dong-fang Shuo is exiled to the earth by the Queen of the West, and that he introduces the Emperor Wu, who wants to be immortal, to a lot of things about the west. The character of Dong-fang Shuo arranged by Taoists reminds us of Hou Xing-zhe 猴行者, the antecedent of Sun Wu-kong, in the Da-Tang San-zang qu-jing shi-hua 大唐三藏取經詩話. Hou Xing-zhe steals peaches from the Queen of the West and is banished from heaven, subsequently he guides Tripitaka Xuan-zang 玄奘三藏 to the west for the purpose of obtaining Buddhist scriptures. The author points out that Buddhists adapted the Taoist character of Dong-fang Shuo as a guide to Hou xing-zhe when they described the pilgrimage and ascentation of Tripikata Xuan-zang. Before giving this view, the author discusses Ju-ling 巨靈, who fights with Sun Wu-kong as a general in the Xi-you-ji. Ju-ling was depicted by Taoists as a dwarf who is a messenger of the Queen of the West and is exposed by Dong-fang Shuo. Going back to the Han dynasty, Ju-ling had two types of the original form, one was the God of canal works, and the other was a turtle which bears a holy mountain on its back. Moreover Ju-ling is now male, now female. The author pays attention to these multiple images of Ju-ling, and explore the origin of the so-called trapped monkey. Then in view of the "goddess and traveler" motif he analyzes the relationship between Dong-fang Shuo and the Queen of the West, as well as Sun Wu-kong and the Goddess of Mercy 觀音菩薩. This analysis shows us the evolution of Sun Wu-kong and the Goddess of Mercy from Dong-fang Shuo and the Queen of the West, which took place against the background of the race for power between Buddhists and Taoisits

The most vividly-depicted character in The Journey to the West is Sun Wu-kong. The book starts with the birth of Sun Wu-kong, and ends with a description of how, after guarding the monk Tang Sanzang (Xuanzang) on his journey into the western regions to collect Buddhist sutras and bring them back to China, Sun Wu-kong is rewarded by being granted Buddhahood (as the \ue2Victorious Fighting Buddha\ue2). Viewed objectively, it is probably fair to say that Sun Wu-kong, rather than Tang Sanzang, is the main character in The Journey to the West. The present study uses the mythological criticism approach to explore the life story of Sun Wu-kong as presented in the book, and to analyze its significance. \ue3\ue3Sun Wu-kong\ue2s life can be broadly divided into two periods: the period in which Sun Wu-kong went under the title of \ue2Great Sage, Equal of Heaven,\ue2 and his time as \ue2Sun Wu-kong, the Wandering Monk\ue2 accompanying Tang Sanzang on his journey. During the first period, Sun Wu-kong underwent a process of growth and maturation; in the second period, he engaged in a search for spiritual enlightenment. The many different people, creatures and events that Sun Wu-kong encounters over the course of his life all have their own individual significance, and can be thought of as archetypes; examples include the various magical artifacts, the landscapes through which Sun Wu-kong and his companions travel, the palaces and temples, and the various different gods, Bodhisattvas and demons, etc. \ue3\ue3Sun Wu-kong was a Heaven-born Stone Monkey. Studying under the patriarch Subodhi, he learned the secrets of immortality, the ability to walk across the clouds, and the \ue272 Transformations.\ue2 Unrestricted by temporal or spatial constraints, Su-kong was able to transform himself at will. The Gold-banded Staff that came into his possession gave Sun Wu-kong unlimited energy. After overcoming numerous challenges, he raised havoc in Heaven, seeking to overthrow Heaven\ue2s rulers. Eventually, he was imprisoned under the Mountain of the Five Elements by the Vairocana Buddha. Following this period as the \ue2Great Sage, Equal of Heaven,\ue2 Sun Wu-kong converted to Buddhism, and became Tang Sanzang\ue2s disciple. As he guarded Tang Sanzang on the latter\ue2s journey in search of precious Buddhist sutras, Sun Wu-kong\ue2s spiritual cultivation took the form of his efforts in overcoming dangers and hardships, and defeating demons and monsters; these actions symbolized Sun Wu-kong\ue2s conquering of the evil side of his own personality. Sun Wu-kong\ue2s actions during his period as \ue2Sun Wu-kong, the Wandering Monk\ue2 embody what the comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell referred to as \ue2the Hero as Warrior.\ue2 \ue3\ue3Sun Wu-kong\ue2s life story thus represents a process of self-realization that conforms to the hero archetype seen in mythology. The course of Sun Wu-kong\ue2s life embodies Campbell\ue2s \ue2hero\ue2s journey\ue2: from departure, through initiation, to the return

M.Phil.This research concerns the relationship between central government and local government in three kingdoms period. The basic political formation in medieval China is that emperors share power with the influential and privileged families. During the period of three kingdoms, the regime Wu is under military pressure of Wei from the north. The emperor Sun Quan assigns responsibility of military defense to clan Lu. Under this circumstance, clan Lu domains Jingzhou district which includes today’s Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi Province. The fiscal and military autonomy of local governor leads Jingzhou to a seemingly independent regime. In order to encourage centralization, Sun Wu adopts a series of polices like Hostage System, Military Power Hereditary System and Military Logistics System. Apart from system arrangement, Sun Wu also promotes some military aristocracy and trusted followers to set constraints and obstacles for local rullingfamilies.Correspondingly, local rulling families, driven by their own interests, coagulate into a powerful strength to fight against the political pressure from the central government. Thesis M.Phil. The Sun Wu tomb in Shangfang Town,Nanjing City is a brick tomb of the Six Dynasties in China, which is very famous for its big scale and complex structure. After being excavated in 2005, microbiological damage occurred on the interior wall of tomb chambers due to the fluctuation of environmental factors, which threatens the historic and culrutal value of this building heritage. Microbiological damage is highly related to the high temperature, high humidity in the tomb chamber and condensation on the wall surface. To solve the problem of microbiological damage in the Sun Wu tomb, the environment monitoring was carried out and the current protection shed on the Sun Wu tomb was optimized. the heat and moisture transfer numerical simulation model of the protection shed was built to evaluate the effects of the optimized protection shed for reducing the condensation on the wall surface. The results show that and add of an functional space into the protection scheme can reduce the condensation on the wall surface of the site.In the protection of masonry archaeological sites, design of such functional space can reduce the condensation on the wall surface of the site,so as to control the microbiological damage in the site

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
