On the design of Islamic blended microfinancing for refugee entrepreneurship: an institutional logic perspective

    No full text
Uncovering apt policy for refugee self-reliance is intricate. Refugee entrepreneurship is often hailed as the way forward for such an objective as it deciphers ‘Canvas Ceiling’. However, the lack of financing for unfeasible and unbankable refugee entrepreneurs prevents this from materialising. This article proposes Islamic blended microfinance for refugee entrepreneurship, integrating state support, the private sector, the philanthropic funds, and Islamic values. Our model differs as it is developed through the lens of the competing logic discussed in the institutional theory. Understanding competing institutional logic is crucial as blended finance involves various agents with distinct moral preferences that are often overlooked by policymakers. We test our model in the spatial context of Indonesia, the home of microfinance and blended Islamic finance. The findings outline that the logics of the three agents and religion (Islam) can converge in contextuality and temporality dimensions. A key to attaining this equilibrium is to meticulously design the payoff between the private sector with market logic and the philanthropic institutions with universal community logic, making them contingent on the state of the economy

The development of the microfinance as well as islamic microfinance Indonesia has been remarkable. It gains many attention by policy makers as well as academicians in many occasions. Topic that was discussed ranged from the past performance, current obstacle as wes as the problem, solution and the opportunity in the future (Hamad 2010, Bank Indonesia 2009,2010). The role of this microfinance gain more important during the recent financial crisis. The subprime mortgage occured in 2008 has affected many countries in the worlds. In Indonesia the effect can be seen from the stock market. Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) shows 2721.25 in January 2008 while it plunged to 1241.54 in October 2008. Companies which the operations is exposing themselves to the exchange rate were obviously got affected since the plunge of the stock market induce investors not to continue their investments in Indonesia. As a result ''fligh to quality" happened and this create fluctuation of the exchange rate. However, other sector such as microfinance does not seem to be affected

Differentiating Islamic, capitalist and socialist economics using utility concept

    No full text
In economics, on one extreme is sosialist economics where all are treated equally and the role of government is very strong. The other extreme is capitalist economics where individual gains more attention and the role of government is less. For those countries adopting socialist economics, people who work hard for a living will experience the same reward as those who do not. The adoption of capitalist economics for countries would allow people to gain benefit which may expand the gap between the rich and the poor. The question would be, where is the position of Islamic economics given those two extremes? (copied from article)

Islamic banks in Indonesia havebeen in existence for more than two decades. Substantial development has taken place in this largest Muslim country. Regulator, academicians, and practitioners have been providing significant support with the objective of improving the performance of the Islamic banking. Hence, it is timely to assess whether its performance differs than that of the conventional banks. This paper aims to describe and critically evaluate and compare the financial performance of Islamic banks to that of conventional banks. Data of Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Return on Asset (ROA), Operational Cost/ Operational Revenue (BOPO), Non-Performing Loan (NPL) /Non Performing Financing (NPF) and Loan Deposit Ratio (LDR)/ Financing Deposit Ratio (FDR) for Islamic and conventional banks are examined. The analysis of monthly data covers the period from January 2004 to July 2014 (127 observations). Paired sampled t-test was adopted to see whether there are significant differences in the financial ratios between both banks. This study found that CAR, ROA, BOPO and NPL of conventional banks are significantly higher than that of Islamic banks but not FDR. Based on the result of capital adequacy, the findings suggest that Islamic banks need to have more capital to face the involved risk as that of conventional banks. Conventional banks need to function them selves as financial intermediaries to support the real sector as that of Islamic banks

    Get PDF
Given the fact that banking is the backbone of the Indonesian economy with a dual banking system. This paper seeks determinants of default rate in Indonesia. Various techniques of econometric tools such as unit root, co-integration test and Impulse Response Function (IRF) utilized. Bank capital has similar influence on the own credit or financing risks. Overall economic performance has a different result to the risk. Among the recommendations are for the government to maintain economic performance to keep default rate as low as possible. Financing Deposit Ratio-based Reserve Requirement policy (which is adopted only in Indonesia) imposed by the central bank seems to be effective in developing the real sector and should adopt in conventional banks.DOI: 10.15408/aiq.v10i1.5903</p
