This paper studies moisture absorption and diffusivity of epoxy reinforced layered structure nanocomposites and its effect on fracture toughness. Two different types of layered fillers employed in the study were clay and graphene platelets, in which both surface layers were unmodified and modified by characterized by swelling analysis and fracture toughness measurement. The outcomes surfactant. The nanocomposites were showed that the moisture absorption and diffusivity decreased with the addition of layered fillers. It was found that the modified graphene platelets and clay outperformed the unmodified layers and neat epoxy in terms of reduction of moisture absorption and diffusivity. The modified graphene platelets reduced the moisture uptake and diffusivity about 30% and 33%, respectively compare to neat epoxy, thus indicates its outstanding performance in barrier applications. However, once the nanocomposites were swelling in the water for 5 days, it is noticed that the fracture toughness of nanocomposites were reduced significantly about 35% in average. Nevertheless, the modified graphene platelets still display the better performance compare to the other samples although there was reduction of fracture toughness

The electric power system has been transformed and evolved towards decentralized systems, which interact with each other and within the whole electrical system. In this way, microgrids are essential components to increase the reliability and efficiency of the power system. The critical issue in isolated microgrid is the energy demand balance in the presence of intermittent renewable energy sources. Energy storage systems are the adequate solution to balance the demand/supply issue and support the ancillary services such as voltage regulation and reserve requirement. However, due to high installation cost of storage system, their sizing is essential for optimized operation of microgrid. The first part of this work proposes energy management system to reduce the operating cost of isolated microgrid. The economic scheduling using firefly algorithm is implemented for the optimization of distributed energy sources and ascertain optimal size of energy storage while meeting the load demand. The efficacy of the optimization algorithm is compared with other metaheuristic techniques for economic and reliability indices such as cost of electricity and loss of power supply probability. In the second part, electric vehicles (EV) are incorporated as flexible load in the power system. The EVs charge coordination with vehicle to grid (V2G) technology is performed with respect to economic and technical perspective. The economic objectives encompass cost minimization and profit maximization whereas technical objectives constitute power loss minimization and peak load reduction. The EV users are certainly concerned for cost of battery replacement due to degradation with active participation in V2G energy exchanges. Therefore, battery degradation model is formulated for real time analysis by considering the depth of discharge at each time interval. The operating cost and V2G profit are analyzed with different penetrations of renewable power generation, EV battery capacity and travelling time. The results indicate that proposed energy management approach effectively reduced the operating cost, ensuring the reliability of the microgrid. Since battery sizes influence the operating cost, optimal battery size is calculated to have minimum cost of electricity and prolong the battery lifetime. The proposed method results in 50% cost reduction when compared with the conventional method. The proposed energy management approach is solved using firefly algorithm, artificial bee colony, harmony search algorithm and particle swarm optimization. It was found that firefly algorithm is robust and computationally effective. In addition, EV charge coordination improves the system performance, minimize the power losses and restricts grid overloading. The integration of renewable energy sources (RES) reduces the system cost and maximizes the profit for the EV users. The system losses and cost of electricity is minimum when the RES penetration is increased while different EV capacities yields minimum profit

    No full text
The combined effect of climate change and increased water demand has put significant strain on groundwater resources globally. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has become an effective approach for addressing groundwater depletion problems and sustainable management of groundwater resources. This review article provides an extensive insight into the existing knowledge of MAR, including the main objectives and applications, implementation techniques (surface spreading, sub-surface, and induced recharge) being practiced over the years, risks and challenges associated with the MAR, and the developments in the field of MAR. This review also explores the potential of MAR in the Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) region, north-eastern Italy. An average increase in temperature and a decrease in precipitation and piezometric levels in the region suggest the development of a proper MAR plan to manage water resources in the decades to come. Additionally, a comparative analysis of studies published over the last 20 years, focusing on the quantitative and qualitative aspects of water resource management, is conducted to analyze the research trends in the field of MAR. The reviewed literature reveals a notable research trend towards the quantitative aspect compared to the qualitative one. This review also identifies a notable disparity in qualitative studies during the analysis of water quality parameters considered in different MAR studies. Based on this review, a prospective viewpoint to address the challenges and expand the scope of the field is presented. This calls for an optimized strategy that considers both water quality and quantity issues, along with incorporating environmental and socio-economic aspects within the framework of MAR

This study investigates the role of Majelis Permusyawaratan Ulama (MPU) in Aceh’s governmental system. As allocated by law, ulama in Aceh are expected to play a crucial role to make sure the government of Aceh applies the shariah principles and values. However, to fulfill this objective, firstly MPU must ensure that they have clear strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this study, is to analyze the strategies adopted by MPU to carry out their roles within the Aceh’s governmental system. This study attempts to examines MPU’s responses to the various challenges faced and explains the underlying concept behind the involvement of ulama as an integral part of Aceh government system. In addition, this study also sought to analyze the roles that MPU played within the Aceh’s provisions of laws. This study is a qualitative in nature, exploring data through the lens of a historical perspective, which were then reported descriptively. Data were collected using two main methods: library research and interviews. Relevant library materials included both written and electronic sources in the form of books, journals, articles, theses, dissertation, conference proceedings, and the web pages were examined. The library-based data were used as a basis to investigate the historical dimension of ulama’s involvement in Aceh’s governmental system, which were then analyzed using the content analysis and thematic methods. Apart from this, data were also gathered from several interviews which were designed to obtain much information of the roles of MPU in Aceh. The interviews were conducted in a semi-structured method which some questions were previously prepared. Twelve correspondents who come from different background were interviewed. During the interviews, depending on the direction to which a particular discussion was geared, relevant follow-up questions were asked. The interview’s data were then transcribed and verified either by consulting the available literatures or by asking a number of new correspondents with the same set of question. This study argued that the involvement of ulama in Aceh’s governmental system had a very strong basis vii either from the perspective of shariah law or the history of its implementation. It was argued that although MPU’s duties, responsibilities, and function were assigned in Qanun No. 2 of 2009, their roles were still constrained by the inadequacy of legislations needed to overcome the technicalities of certain implementation issues, making their roles ineffective at times. It was also argued the differences in the way government officers understood certain religious issues often further complicated the process. Furthermore, MPU were often found to be very tight-lipped about the government which was purposely done to avoid unnecessary conflicts. They chose to resort more to a self-restrain method by being very selective in their issuance of fatwa while at the same time continuing to push for more supportive legislations. In addition, this study also argued that MPU were truly making a constant effort to train a new generation of ulama who would be quite open in their dealings with other ulama-based institutions
