    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Family planning methods among women in a vaginal microbicide feasibility study in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

    This study investigated contraceptive use among women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Of 866 sexually active women not intending pregnancy and screened for a microbicide feasibility study, 466 (54%) reported currently using modern contraceptives: injectables (31%), condoms (12%), sterilization (60%) and pills (4%). Multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed statistically significantly higher odds of current contraceptive use among married vs. engaged/unmarried women (aOR 1.64), multiparous vs. nulliparous (aOR 4.45) and women who completed secondary education or above vs. primary or less (aOR 1.64). Significantly lower odds of use were observed among women aged 40+ vs. age 15-19 (aOR 0.38). Age, marital status, education level and parity were associated with different contraceptive method choices. Among 195 women followed longitudinally for 9 months, contraceptive use increased significantly from 56% to 70%, largely due to increased condom use (15% to 28%). Results highlight the importance of integrating family planning and HIV/STI prevention counseling and informing promotion of further contraceptive uptake among women not intending pregnancy

    pH-driven reversible self-assembly of micron-scale DNA scaffold

    Inspired by cytoskeletal scaffolds that sense and respond dynamically to environmental changes and chemical inputs with a unique capacity for reconfiguration, we propose a strategy that allows the dynamic and reversible control of the growth and breakage of micronscale synthetic DNA structures upon pH changes. We do so by rationally designing a pH-responsive system composed of synthetic DNA strands that act as pH sensors, regulators, and structural elements. Sensor strands can dynamically respond to pH changes and route regulatory strands to direct the self-assembly of structural elements into tubular structures. This example represents the first demonstration of the reversible assembly and disassembly of micron-scale DNA scaffolds using an external chemical input other than DNA. The capacity to reversibly modulate nanostructure size may promote the development of smart devices for catalysis or drug-delivery applications

    On Approximation Schemes for Stabbing Rectilinear Polygons

    We study the problem of stabbing rectilinear polygons, where we are given n rectilinear polygons in the plane that we want to stab, i.e., we want to select horizontal line segments such that for each given rectilinear polygon there is a line segment that intersects two opposite (parallel) edges of it. Our goal is to find a set of line segments of minimum total length such that all polygons are stabbed. For the special case of rectangles, there is an O(1)-approximation algorithm and the problem is NP-hard [Chan, van Dijk, Fleszar, Spoerhase, and Wolff, 2018]. Also, the problem admits a QPTAS [Eisenbrand, Gallato, Svensson, and Venzin, 2021] and even a PTAS [Khan, Subramanian, and Wiese, 2022]. However, the approximability for the setting of more general polygons, e.g., L-shapes or T-shapes, is completely open. In this paper, we give conditions under which the problem admits a (1+ε)-approximation algorithm. We assume that each input polygon is composed of rectangles that are placed on top of each other. We show that if all input polygons satisfy the hourglass condition, then the problem admits a quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme. In particular, it is thus unlikely that this case is APX-hard. Furthermore, we show that there exists a PTAS if each input polygon is composed out of rectangles with a bounded range of widths. On the other hand, we prove that the general case of the problem (in which the input polygons may not satisfy these conditions) is APX-hard, already if all input polygons have only eight edges. We remark that all polygons with fewer edges automatically satisfy the hourglass condition. For arbitrary rectilinear polygons we even show a lower bound of Ω(log n) for the possible approximation ratio, which implies that the best possible ratio is in Θ(log n) since the problem is a special case of Set Cover
