Introduction to the Special Issue Honoring Bob and Ellen Kaplan

    No full text
In 1994, Bob and Ellen Kaplan embarked together with other friends and colleagues on a wonderful adventure. Friends had lamented that there was a lack of high-quality math learning experiences for kids along the lines of the Math Circles offered in the former Soviet Union, so the Kaplans decided to do something about it. This special issue is dedicated to a remembrance of that adventure and its impact on the mathematical and personal development of many people

    Physical Chemistry

    No full text
This Physical Chemistry textbook by Yingbin Ge is an open-access resource meticulously crafted for undergraduate students in chemistry, biochemistry, and related STEM fields. The text strikes a precise balance between conceptual clarity and mathematical rigor, ensuring students build a deep understanding of thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum chemistry, and statistical mechanics. What sets this text apart is its student-centered pedagogy. Rather than focusing on formalism alone, Ge guides learners through step-by-step derivations that prioritize physical meaning. By explicitly addressing common misconceptions and integrating worked examples, the book transforms complex theory into manageable insights. Its modular structure offers instructors the flexibility to adapt the material to various course sequences, while the accompanying suite of lecture and tutorial videos makes it a comprehensive, accessible solution for the modern classroom

The Pedagogical Lineage of the Kaplans and its Future

    No full text
This article describes the origins of Bob and Ellen Kaplan\u27s Math Circle, one of the first Math Circles in the U.S. It covers Bob and Ellen\u27s personal histories and some of the wide-ranging impact of their work and philosophy of teaching. It also discusses how the current form of their organization, The Global Math Circle, is working to carry forward their legacy, including building community and supporting Math Circle leaders with the Nexus project

    The Sunday Math Circle

    No full text
Bob and Ellen Kaplan envisioned and organized a style of math circle centered on the idea that children of all ages can work like mathematicians do: creatively, collaboratively, and ecstatically. This article surveys four sample topics covered during a Sunday morning math circle in the Boston area, based on Bob and Ellen\u27s invaluable guidance. I also offer some reflections on what I learned from Bob and Ellen, and how it is reflected in these math circles

Between “the favela” and “the city”: exploring the daily geographies of Carolina Maria de Jesus using GIS

    No full text
Geographic information systems (GIS) enable interesting visual and analytical engagement with personal narratives. I offer a case study by constructing digital historical maps of Carolina Maria de Jesus’s São Paulo as described in her 1950s diary entries from Quarto de Despejo (published as Child of the Dark in English). Examining 48 locations mentioned in the book, I show how GIS algorithms such as standard deviation ellipses and kernel density estimation can summarize geographies of daily activities in the personal, institutional, and professional realms, including in the informal economy. I also employ ideas from feminist cartography to put Carolina’s own words on the map and generate 3D visualizations that explore her perception of urban space and her struggle for basic needs. The analysis indicates that Carolina’s geographies were relatively limited, and that much of her quest for life-sustaining resources took place in mixed-use urban space between the city center and her home in the Canindé favela
