“I beg you to tell me what has become of Djamila”: The Political Mobilization of Simone de Beauvoir’s Readers During the Boupacha Affair
By Sophia Millman This is a condensed version of a Masters thesis dedicated to the political mobilization of Simone de Beauvoir’s readers. The citations from the letters were translated from French by the author. *** On June 2, 1960, the French government ordered all copies of the daily Algiers edition of Le Monde seized and destroyed to suppress the publication of Simone de Beauvoir’s article “Pour Djamila Boupacha.” Beauvoir, a self-professed “woman of letters”, not “of action[1]”, and one ..
A comparative study of form and theology in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil
In this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor
studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the
souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her
distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an
awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly
Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because
ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy

“The Workers Know Everything”: Attention, Necessity and Politics in Simone Weil
To this end, in the first part of the text I will analyze the philosophical roots of Weil’s reflection on labor; second, I will delve into the critique of alienated labor in contemporary industry; finally, I will examine the synthesis between manual and intellectual labor that the author seeks in the notion of attention. In this way, I will show how this last aspect, one of the most original features of Weil’s reflection, allows her work to continue an effective dialogue with contemporary political thoughtDepto. de Filosofía y SociedadFac. de FilosofíaTRUEpu
Profilo di Simone de Beauvoir
Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) is a philosopher and a writer who has strongly influenced feminist thinking in the second half of the twentieth century and is mainly remembered as the author of The Second Sex. In this profile I will try to show how this text is the result of a philosophical path capable of interpreting existentialism and philosophical writing in an original way.

Considerations of old age and ageing are not the central part of the work of Simone de Beauvoir. However, fragmentary mentions of these topics in her memoirs, and especially her two-volume book The Coming of Age, make Simone de Beauvoir an author whose approach to the topics makes an important contribution to multidisciplinary research and understanding of old age and ageing. A strong voice of protest she raised back in 1970 against mal-treatment of elderly by the society, can be an impetus for activism in the area of the protection of human rights even today. Namely, her work on ageing is a kind of a manifesto and a call for total participation of elderly in the society. Primary intention of this paper is to point out to those Simone de Beauvoir's considerations on the topics that could be relevant for the social policy field, as well as to her arguments underlying the considerations. Having in mind her explanations of the vulnerable position of elderly in general, the paper has two-fold focus. On the one hand, basic assumptions of her approach to ageing in general are taken into account, along with the meanings the society attributes to ageing. On the other hand, certain challenges are taken into account, such as transition from childhood into adulthood and old age, revelation of one's own old age, sex as an old age determinant and changes in the world of work of importance for the changed position of elderly.U razmatranjima Simone de Bovoar, starost i starenje nemaju centralno mesto. Međutim, fragmentarni stavovi o ovim temama u njenim memoarskim knjigama, a neuporedivo više dvotomno delo Starost, svrstavaju je u autore čiji pristupi predstavljaju važan doprinos multidisciplinarnom proučavanju i promišljanju u ovoj oblasti.
