Experiences and challenges from a software ecosystem for cyber-physical systems development: An empirical study on industry-academia collaboration
Per Larssons »Öfversikt af Färsmålen» : Utgiven och kommenterad av Mathias Strandberg
Per Larsson (1860–1933) was one of the most productive and reliable surveyors of dialects and folk traditions in Sweden’s southernmost province of Scania (Skåne) in the late 19th century. Though he would never publish a scientific work and much less make a career in academia, he laid much of the foundation for what eventually became the Scanian dialect collections of the present-day Institute for Language and Folklore in Sweden. Along with lexical collections comprising several thousand glosses, he wrote several descriptive works on Scanian dialects with an emphasis on the sound system. These were never published in Larsson’s lifetime. Nevertheless, they are indeed relevant to linguists with an interest in Scanian and South Swedish dialect geography. The present work is a commented edition of one of Larsson’s dialect descriptions, namely that of the dialects of the district of Färs in South-East Scania.</p
Experiences and challenges from developing cyber-physical systems in industry-academia collaboration
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are increasing in developmental complexity. Several emerging technologies, such as Model-based engineering, DevOps, and Artificial intelligence, are expected to alleviate the associated complexity by introducing more advanced capabilities. The AIDOaRt research project investigates how the aforementioned technologies can assist in developing complex CPSs in various industrial use cases. In this paper, we discuss the experiences of industry and academia collaborating to improve the development of complex CPSs through the experiences in the research project. In particular, the paper presents the results of two working groups that examined the challenges of developing complex CPSs from an industrial and academic perspective when considering the previously mentioned technologies. We present five identified challenge areas from developing complex CPSs and discuss them from the perspective of industry and academia: data, modeling, requirements engineering, continuous software and system engineering, as well as intelligence and automation. Furthermore, we highlight practical experience in collaboration from the project via two explicit use cases and connect them to the challenge areas. Finally, we discuss some lessons learned through the collaborations, which might foster future collaborative efforts
Breast cancer natural history models and risk prediction in mammography screening cohorts
In this thesis, the foundations are laid for a new natural history model for breast cancer—specifically designed to take advantage of detailed screening cohorts. Three diverse applications of this model are then presented. Study I develops the statistical framework for the natural history model, and shows with simulations that the model parameters can be estimated based on only the information available at diagnosis. It also describes how to adjust for random left truncation—an important aspect to consider when studying prospective cohorts. In Study II, the newly developed natural history model is applied to a Swedish mammography screening cohort. It estimates the population-level distributions of age at onset and tumor volume doubling time. As an extension, the tumor volume doubling time is allowed to depend on the age at onset. The study also estimates the rate of symptomatic detection and screening sensitivity as functions of tumor size. Simulations are used to validate the estimates. Study III shifts the focus from inference to risk prediction. The natural history model is modified to incorporate risk factors separately in each of the four components of the model. Short-term risk prediction is then performed on the screening cohort and the results are compared to a conventional approach to breast cancer risk prediction. The study also develops novel predictions based on, for example, having experienced tumor onset, having a tumor detected at the next screening, and having a tumor detected before it reaches a certain size if attending the next screening. In Study IV, the model is used to study the effect that certain acquisition parameters used in mammography have on the detectability of the breast cancer tumor. With the model, it is possible to more directly study the mammography screening sensitivity, compared to the ad hoc definition of sensitivity commonly seen in the screening literature. It was identified that the compressed breast thickness—in addition to the percent mammographic density and latent tumor size—was inversely associated with the screening sensitivity.List of scientific papersI. Gaze into literacy : the potential of eye movement analysis for assessing children's word reading skills in ecological contexts
Children's reading proficiency is reflected in their eye movements during reading, a subject predominantly explored in experimental settings. This doctoral project investigates these dynamics within naturalistic environments. Word reading assessments and eye movement measures were collected from Swedish schoolchildren, revealing patterns consistent with prior research but with increased variability in eye movement data. Analyses showed age-related changes in eye movement characteristics correlating with word reading outcomes. The link between mean fixation duration and tests reliant on lexical processing was particularly strong. Eye movements explained variance in multiple word reading tasks and accounted for nearly half of the overall variance in word reading skill one year post-recording. Among second grade students with below-average performance, those persistently scoring below average in third grade exhibited significantly longer fixations than those who would improve, indicating early eye movements can be used to differentiate between children with persistent difficulties and eventual improvement. The findings of this thesis reinforces previous findings in the participants’ school environments, suggesting that it is feasible to analyze connections between children’s eye movements and reading development under ecologically valid circumstances. Results show that eye movement analysis could be useful to reading assessments, as it offers a means to index children’s word reading ability in concurrent and longitudinal perspectives and can be used to detect true skill deficits. However, the effects of limited experimental control should be considered upon reviewing results. With continued research and careful implementation, eye tracking holds promise for early education practices.List of scientific papersI. Author Self-Citation in the Turkish Otorhinolaryngology Literature
Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and other characteristics of author self-citations in six Turkey-originated general otorhinolaryngology (ORL) journals of Turkish ORL literature. Methods:A total of 970 articles published in six Turkey-originated general ORL journals (ENT Updates, Journal of Ear Nose Throat and Head Neck Surgery, KBB-Forum, Praxis of Otorhinolaryngology, The Turkish Journal of Ear Nose and Throat, and Turkish Archives of Otorhinolaryngology) in 2016-2020 were analyzed for author self-citations. The association between author self-citations and journal types, study types, study topics, country of origin, and compatibility with the topic were also evaluated. Results:There were 265 author self-citations (0.273 per article) which corresponded to 1.36% of all citations. There was no significant difference between the journal types, study topics, and origin of the studies in terms of mean self-citation values per study, whereas case reports had significantly lower self-citations than review and original investigations. There were three citations (1.1%) that were irrelevant to the study topic. Conclusion:To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigated the practice of author self-citation in Turkish ORL literature. Author self-citation rate in the Turkish-originated general ORL journals was found remarkably lower than the medical literature, whereas the self-citations were found compatible with the study topic to a very large extent. Members of the scientific community including authors, readers, and journal editors should be cautious regarding the unethical practices of self-citations
