Las paradojas de Sigurd Lewerentz. Del Clasicismo al estilo tardío

    No full text
In his constant exploration of the less tangible dimensions of architecture, José Ignacio Linazasoro delves into the legacy of Sigurd Lewerentz with his work The paradoxes of Sigurd Lewerentz. From Classicism to late style. This essay is presented as a meticulous introspection, not only of the evolution of Lewerentz\u27s work but also of the intellectual and creative process behind his oeuvre, a figure of reference for the author, who acknowledges his influence since he discovered him.

In Laila Stien’s short story «Markblomster», the narrator recounts the story of her brother and his relationship to Alice, a city girl who ends up taking her own life by driving their car into the ocean. This article analyses the short story with particular focus on how the narrator uses strategies to take control over the suicide narrative, and actively suppresses the perspective of the deceased. This control method is examined within the broader tendency to frame suicide narratives in metaphors of silence. Furthermore, this is interpreted as an expression of what Peter Wessel Zapffe, in On the Tragic (1941), calls suppression, i.e. maintaining decorum to preserve what he terms the autotelic hope. Via Zapffe’s theory of tragedy, I argue that the tragic potential of the short story cannot be limited to the individual suicide but also, through the narrator’s narrative strategies, reveals a human need to suppress the tragic aspects of existence as such.I Laila Stiens novelle «Markblomster» beretter novellens forteller historien om sin bror og hans kjærlighetsforhold til Alice, ei byjente som ender med å ta sitt eget liv ved å kjøre bilen deres på havet. Lens and Will: Sigurd Lewerentz’s way of travel

Throughout architectural history, outstanding architects have often been outstanding travelers. Sigurd Lewerentz, a legendary figure in Swedish modern architecture, is undoubtedly one of them. Lewerentz, who started his independent architectural practice in 1910 and died in 1975, lived during an exciting period that saw the emergence of many revolutionary technologies. Like his fellow modernists, Lewerentz embraced them. But unlike his peers, his passion for new technologies radically extended to his travel - he only used a camera to document things, rather than drawing in sketchbooks. Based on the concept of aura proposed by the German thinker Walter Benjamin, a new perspective to understand Lerwerentz’s photos is proposed. And by reflecting on previous studies of two important sacred buildings designed by Lewerentz, namely the Resurrection Chapel and the Church of St. Peter, this paper presents some alignments between the photographs and the designs, which reveal Lewerentz’s approach to learning from travels.AR2A011Architectural History ThesisArchitecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Omkring Grundtvigs historieskrivning - status og fremtidsperspektiver

Grundtvig3s Historical Writings - Status and Perspectives By Sigurd Aa. Aarnes. For long periods of his life Grundtvig was occupied with the research and representation af history. If as a historian he has, nevertheless, been almost forgotten, it is because his type and aim make him cut across the main trend of nineteenth century positivistic research and historical criticism. Grundtvig was not a historian in the modern professional sense of the word but a narrator and philosopher. He does not aim at establishing historical facts, “wie es eigentlich gewesen” (Leopold von Ranke). He is more concerned with the question how to make history serve the cause of national and religious revival for which he is fighting. As a result of this Grundtvig’s historical writings are of minor interest as such (i.e. as historical writings). We study them today because they are sources of the history of ideas, interesting not by the world history they impart but by what they imply about Grundtvig himself and his age. In the last part of the article the author mentions some objects of research within the field in question. Grundtvig” s chief work of history, the monumental Haandbog i Verdens-Historien (1833-44), has not yet been sufficiently examined. Nor has special attention been paid to the influence of Grundtvig’s historical works on contemporary writers and on the teaching of history in the Folk Highschool. For any study of Grundtvig as a critic of the age his historical writings are of the first importance

Light, dark, and grey: Representation of hero in William Morris’s the Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs

    No full text
Acclaimed and influential, the pre-Raphaelite artist and author William Morris’s long narrative poem The Story of Sigurd and the Fall of the Niblungs (1876) fits, at first sight, the Victorian interpretation of the Old Norse world. It is essentially a world deprived of the original context, where the heroes were re-moulded within the contemporary frame. However, as the story goes, Sigurd’s life gradually drifts away from that of a Victorian conventional hero: unlike other Old-Norse-made-Victorian heroes preceding him, he fell prey to the power of the dark—the Niblungs or ‘the Cloudy people’. In this case, is he still a hero? If yes, what sort of hero will he be? It is the goal of this paper to address these questions. They will be approached through three successive steps: the first part will introduce the image of the Victorian Old Norse heroes in general as representations of light in contrast to absolute darkness, represented by the two Baldur-themed narrative poems from the 1860s. In the second, Sigurd’s rise and fall as a conventional Victorian hero will be examined through analysing a series of key events in his life. At last, it will be argued that, instead of being a symbol of perfect light, Sigurd is essentially a hero of the grey—a compromise between the idealised and the real, which accords with Morris’s own life experience and perception of heroism

The Cost of Converting Excitons into Free Charge Carriers in Organic Solar Cells

    No full text
Efficient exciton dissociation and subsequent generation of free charge carriers at the organic donor-acceptor interface requires a number of electron-transfer processes. It is a common view that these steps result in an unavoidable energy loss in organic photovoltaic devices that is not present in other types of solar cells. The currently best performing organic solar cells with power conversion efficiencies over 16% challenge this view, and no interfacial charge-transfer states with energy significantly lower than the strongly absorbing singlet states are detected within the gap of the used donor and acceptor materials. This Perspective will discuss implications, the remaining sources of energy loss, and open questions to be solved to achieve power conversion efficiencies over 20%.The authors acknowledge funding from the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO Vlaanderen) through projects G0D0118N and G0B2718N and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) through project 03IPT602X.Vandewal, K (reprint author), Hasselt Univ, Inst Mat Res IMO IMOMEC, Wetenschapspk 1, B-3590 Diepenbeek, Belgium.
