Donetsk National University – Topicality of ecological and botanical research of steppe associations is conditioned both by scientific requirements (ecological and cenotic niches, potentials; steadiness and dynamism; diagnostics and control of the state of ecosystems balance) and practice of land tenure and resource preservation. As a result of the inventory on the territory of the RLP «Kleban-Byk» 13 species of Stipa were identified. In the course of the research it was stated that the age state of the populations is not satisfactory and demands reintroduction measures. In cases when anthropogenic impact leads to disappearance of these species from the complex of vegetable groups, there is need of their reintroduction, its successfulness having been proved for S. dasyphyllа and S. capіllata. Department of Biology, Donetsk National Universit

In order to describe phytogeographically Stipa pastures of the province of Mendoza, a previous revision of the genus is undertaken. The work begins with morphological considerations, the principal attention heing paid to the taxonomic values of the characters. A key based fundamentally an suhgenuses established by SPEcAzzINI is given, and as to Pappostipa subgenus, the author follows the judgment of Agronomic Engineer L. R. PARODI. Different taxa are described and to these the author adds the studied materíals and his observations on their distribution, systematics, etc. On the whole, 35 Mendoza species, 12 varieties and forms are named. The following new species are treated: Stirpa Semperiana, S. vatroensis. S. Ruiz Lealii, S. Parodiana, S. malalhuensis, S. barrancaensis; equally, the following varieties: S. speciosa v. parva, S. vaginata v. dilatata, S. cordobensis v. tuberculata, and the following forms: S. speciosa f. horrida, S. speciosa f. abscondita, S. vaginata f. laevis, S. vaginata f. contracta, S. vaginata f. immersa, S. vaginata f. rigida, S. chrysophylla f. minuta y S. chrysophylla f. modica. The possibility of hybrids S. speciosa - S. vaginata is discussed, going over to the synonymy of S. perrigida SPEc. The species and varieties are illustrated with analytic drawings and photographies of the types. Se consideran nuevas especies, Stipa Semperiana, S. vatroensis, S. Ruiz Lealii, S. Parodiana, S. malalhuensis y S. barrancaensis; como nuevas variedades, S. speciosa var. parva, S. vaginata var. dilatata y S. cordobensis var. tnberculata y como nuevas formas S. speciosa var. horrida, S. speciosa fma. abscondita, S. vaginata fma. laevis, S. vaginata fma. contracta, S. vaginata fma. immersa, S. vaginata fma. rigida, S. chrysophylla fma. minuta, y S. chrysophylla fma, modica. Se discute la posibilidad de híbridos entre S. speciosa y S. vaginata y se pasa a la sinonimia S. perrigida SPEG. Las especies y variedades se ilustran con dibujos analíticos y fotografías de los tipos.Fil: Roig, Fidel A.. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Facultad de Ciencias Agraria

Oxidised LDL (OxLDL) induces production of platelet derived growth factor AA (PDGF AA) from aortic smooth muscle cells

No full text
Objectives: Elevated concentrations of oxidised low density lipoproteins (OxLDL) are associated with accelerated atherogenesis. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of OxLDL on the proliferation rate and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) AA production on aortic smooth muscle cells. High density lipoproteins (HDL), which are known to have a protective effect against atherosclerosis, were used as control. Materials and methods: Bovine aortic smooth muscle cells were grown in presence of increased concentrations of OxLDL and HDL and in presence of control medium culture (DMEM). Proliferation rate was assessed by 3H-thymidine uptake. PDGF AA production was determined by ELISA and Western Blot Analysis. Results: OxLDL increased the proliferation rate of aortic smooth muscle cells as compared to DMEM and HDL (p < 0.001). The mitogenic activity of OxLDL on smooth muscle cells was reduced adding anti-PDGF AA antibodies (p < 0.001). PDGF AA production by aortic smooth muscle cells was increased after exposure to OxLDL as compared to DMEM (p < 0.001). HDL significantly reduced the production of PDGF AA by aortic smooth muscle cells (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Part of the atherogenic effect of OxLDL is mediated through the autocrine production of PDGF AA from aortic smooth muscle cells

Angiogenesis as a prognostic indicator in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis has gained wide acceptance as a reliable prognostic factor in several solid tumors. However, to date, experience in pancreatic adenocarcinoma is limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens from 45 patients radically operated on at our departments from 1988 to 1997 were stained immunohistochemically with the antibodies anti-mutant p53, anti-bcl2, anti Ki67 and anti-CD31. All the slides were reviewed by the same pathologist without knowledge of the patients' outcome. RESULTS: Mutant p53, Ki67 index and vessel count were significantly related to tumoral behaviour and patients' outcome. Among patients with nodal involvement (Stage III), cumulative survival between hypovascular and hypervascular subgroups differed significantly (p = 0.03). Angiogenesis was independent from TNM in assessing the patients'prognosis at COX analysis (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: In patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, angiogenesis is a reliable indicator of tumor extension, lymph node status and survival. Its evaluation as a common procedure may contribute to a further improvement in the management of these patients and to a proper selection of those who could benefit from different follow-up protocols or adjuvant treatment
