Multiple Sound Sources of the Vocal Tract.

    No full text
This paper will discuss multiple sound sources of the vocal tract, focusing specifically on one type of multiple sound source, that of (imitated Tibetan) chant. First I will present a physiological outline of multiple sound sources, in order to better understand chant as just one of the many types of multiple sound sources that composers and performers might utilize. The main body of the paper will then describe a collaborative study between Drs. Khidr, Bless and the author, which is designed to quantify the physiologic and acoustic parameters of chant. By doing so, this paper will attempt to merge current musical compositional imperatives with current scientific rigor and rationale. Ultimately, this cross-disciplinary work will impact both voice science and musical expression as much more needs to be learned regarding the limits of the voice. Compositionally, the value for introducing scientific rigor into the world of new music has been well understood by those associated with electronic and computer music, acoustic modeling and design, or for composers exploring the limits of expression associated with the extensions of performance technique. However, the voice has been treated much with the same musical aesthetic and principles of phonation that existed during the 18th and 19th centuries. So that while instruments have incorporated multiphonics, complex (noise-based) frequency signals, and transient gestures, the voice has remained, for the most part, the carrier of simple melodic formuli. Therefore, this paper will suggest that by knowing the limits of the voice and what is pedagogically safe, contemporary performance/compositional practices will begin to explore and expand upon the current trends of positing simple solutions when approaching the voice

    ANALYSIS OF LIQUIDITY COVERAGE RATIO

The diploma thesis examines the liquidity coverage ratio. The thesis described the events which preceded the introduction of new liquidity regulatory requirements. There is evidence that Czech banks could have some short term liquidity troubles during the financial crisis since there was a large deposit withdrawals. The liquidity coverage ratio is constructed for small Czech bank in practice. Due to practical experience with LCR implementation in small bank author could focus on most important parts of LCR. In comparison of LCR with other indicators of liquidity is ilustrated that LCR could not be replaced with another liquidity ratio. It is shown how foreign banks responded to introduction of liquidity ratios which are similar to LCR. Foreign banks replaced less liquid assets with more liquid assets and replaced less stable deposits with more stable deposits. Development of liquidity ratios for the Czech banking sector and the conclusions of the studies Pavlík (2012) and ČNB (2014) leads to the conclusion that the introduction of indicators will not have an impact on the Czech banking sector, since the sector should meet the minimum requirements

(DIPF/Orig.)The author summarizes research results of the past two decades and puts a theoretical model up for discussion. Educational expansion proceeds via different levels representing a structural unity. Once the room for learning is exhausted on a development level, the leap onto a new level is provoked through the self-expansion of the educational system. In this, the number of students in teacher training as a proportion of the entire student body from 1820 up to the present is considered the best indicator. The driving force in educational expansion both in the individual career and in the collective historical process is a deficit provoking new expectations and efforts. (DIPF/Orig.

Personalidad y comunicación no verbal: acceso al argumento inconsciente por medio de los impulsores psicológicos

The present article is based on the personality evaluation from NeoAdlerian perspective (Frankl, Wexberg Titze, Berne). 1 will start presuming that human beings reveal their unconscious life plan or "argument" through their way of talking and certain non-verbal response habits which we call: "psychological driving" of small argument. The non-verbal behavior interpretation needs theoretical reference added by the author for a better underst andin g. Without talking in the name of Eric Berne's analytic theory and with the Neo Adlerian approach, the author reflects on sorne concepts related to the unconscious subject, the personality structure, the concept of finality in phycology and the counter-argument as the argument sophistication subject s: reformulating since a bio cultural approach whichthe human being interprets as a construction of double normativity.

Cycling on the Verge? Exploring the Place of Utility Cycling in Contemporary New Zealand Transport Policy

    No full text
Efforts to increase cycling as a mode of transport (utility cycling) occur at central, regional and local levels of government through a range of supportive strategies, research, and guidelines. Despite these efforts, utility cycling levels in New Zealand have remained persistently low. This thesis examines the apparent disparity between policy intent and policy result, using a discourse analytical approach. It examines how cycling is positioned in contemporary New Zealand transport policy documents, and explores whose priorities are shaping transport policy with what implications for utility cycling. This study uses a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to analyse the land transport documents from across the institutions of government. The CDA approach, grounded in the work of van Dijk and Fairclough, draws on ideas from the interpretive tradition of discourse analysis, inspired by Foucault’s concepts of knowledge and power. This approach reveals the position of utility cycling by exposing the framing, dominant discourses, and discursive strategies that privilege certain transport objectives and activities over others. The findings show transport is promoted almost exclusively by central government as an activity to facilitate economic growth and efficiency, despite its potential (and actual) impacts on health and well-being, social justice, and environmental sustainability. The discursive practices of the government privilege private motor vehicle use, helping to both legitimate and maintain that privilege at all levels of government, while positioning utility cycling as a marginalised mode of transport. This thesis contributes to scholarship on utility cycling and land transport policy in New Zealand by identifying how the discursive strategies of government control the position of utility cycling in New Zealand. This study underscores the need for a central government-led, long-term strategic vision for a genuinely integrated, multi-modal transport system, in order for the benefits of utility cycling to be fully maximised

Vibratory stimulation enhances thyroid epithelial cell function

AbstractThe tissues of the body are routinely subjected to various forms of mechanical vibration, the frequency, amplitude, and duration of which can contribute both positively and negatively to human health. The vocal cords, which are in close proximity to the thyroid, may also supply the thyroid with important mechanical signals that modulate hormone production via mechanical vibrations from phonation. In order to explore the possibility that vibrational stimulation from vocalization can enhance thyroid epithelial cell function, FRTL-5 rat thyroid cells were subjected to either chemical stimulation with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), mechanical stimulation with physiological vibrations, or a combination of the two, all in a well-characterized, torsional rheometer-bioreactor. The FRTL-5 cells responded to mechanical stimulation with significantly (p<0.05) increased metabolic activity, significantly (p<0.05) increased ROS production, and increased gene expression of thyroglobulin and sodium-iodide symporter compared to un-stimulated controls, and showed an equivalent or greater response than TSH only stimulated cells. Furthermore, the combination of TSH and oscillatory motion produced a greater response than mechanical or chemical stimulation alone. Taken together, these results suggest that mechanical vibrations could provide stimulatory cues that help maintain thyroid function

Fearless dominance and performance in field sales: a predictive study

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordIn a prospective study of 150 junior salespeople in the same company, we examined the relation between fearless dominance, which is a dimension of trait psychopathy, and objective performance in field sales. After controlling for demographic variables, length of job tenure, initial sales training quality, and disciplined achievement motivation, the results supported an inverted U‐shaped relation, which showed that, after a certain turning point, increases in fearless dominance resulted in decreases in performance. Thus, the most successful salespeople in our sample possessed moderate levels of fearless dominance. Implications for theory, practice, and future research are provided in light of a number of notable strengths and limitations

Vocal Pedagogy at the End of the Twentieth Century: Revealing the Hidden Instrument

    No full text
abstract: The teaching of singing remained remarkably stable until, at the end of the twentieth century, advances in the understanding of voice science stimulated dramatic changes in approach to vocal pedagogy. Previously, the technology needed to accurately measure physiologic change within the larynx and breath-support musculature during the process of singing simply did not exist. Any prior application of scientific study to the voice was based primarily upon auditory evaluation, rather than objective data accumulation and assessment. After a centuries-long history, within a span of twenty years, vocal pedagogy evolved from an approach solely derived from subjective, auditory evidence to an application grounded in scientific data. By means of analysis of significant publications by Richard Miller, Robert Sataloff, and Ingo Titze, as well as articles from The Journal of Singing and The Journal of Voice, I establish a baseline of scientific knowledge and pedagogic practice ca. 1980. Analysis and comparison of a timeline of advancement in scientific insight and the discussion of science in pedagogical texts, 1980-2000, reveal the extent to which voice teachers have dramatically changed their method of instruction. I posit that voice pedagogy has undergone a fundamental change, from telling the student only what to do, via auditory demonstration and visual imagery, to validating with scientific data how and why students should change their vocal approach. The consequence of this dramatic pedagogic evolution has produced singers who comprehend more fully the science of their art.Dissertation/ThesisD.M.A. Music 201
