The Gender Pay Gap Revisited: Does Machine Learning offer New Insights?

    No full text
This paper analyses gender differences in pay at the mean as well as along the wage distribution in Germany. We estimate the adjusted gender pay gap applying a machine learning method (post-double-LASSO procedure). Comparing results from this method to conventional models in the literature, we find that the estimated gap differs substantially depending on the approach used. The main reason is that the machine learning approach selects numerous interactions and second-order polynomials as well as different covariates at various points of the distribution. This insight suggests that more flexible specifications are needed to estimate gender differences in pay more appropriately

John Henry Newman on faith and reason

    Get PDF
The author explains how, in contrast with the risk “of the twin reduction of faith to a mere emotive principle and reason to a mechanical exercise”, Newman seeks to re-define and widen the concepts of reason and philosophy, so that, free from rationalism, philosophy and reason can again give sense to one’s lived experience. A reason so widened by the “experience of life” and by a living heart will be much more able to welcome a faith which is given to it not as a right, or as syllogism, or as a burden, but as gift of love. Thus, faith is no longer seen as something irrational, distant, accidental, as if it were a simple “private preference”. Instead, it becomes a very reasonable and warm impulse that changes man’s perspective over his existence and his Christian commitment, and transfigures him towards a life of holiness. Gender differences in wage expectations: the role of biased beliefs

    No full text
We analyze gender differences in expected starting salaries along the wage expectations distribution of prospective university students in Germany, using elicited beliefs about both own salaries and salaries for average other students in the same field. Unconditional and conditional quantile regressions show 5–15% lower wage expectations for females. At all percentiles considered, the gender gap is more pronounced in the distribution of expected own salary than in the distribution of wages expected for average other students. Decomposition results show that biased beliefs about the own earnings potential relative to others and about average salaries play a major role in explaining the gender gap in wage expectations for oneself

Overconfidence and Gender Differences in Wage Expectations

We analyze the impact of overconfidence on gender differences in wage expectations using elicited beliefs of German university applicants. Interestingly, female students have lower wage expectations and are less overconfident than their male counterparts. Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions show that a substantial part (7.6%) of the gender gap in wage expectations can be explained by stronger overconfidence of males. Applying recentered influence function decompositions, we find that the impact of overconfidence on the gender gap is particularly strong at the bottom and top of the wage expectation distribution, suggesting that females with the lowest expectations feature a very low level of confidence while males with the highest expectations feature a very high level of confidence

We analyze the impact of (over-)confidence on gender differences in expected start-ing salaries using elicited beliefs of prospective university students in Germany. According to our results, female students have lower wage expectations and are less overconfident than their male counterparts. Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions of the mean show that 7.7% of the gender gap in wage expectations is attributable to a higher overconfidence of males. Decompositions of the unconditional quantiles of expected salaries suggest that the contribution of gender differences in confidence to the gender gap is particularly strong at the bottom and top of the wage expectation distribution

Schröder J, Maus I, Meyer K, et al. Complete genome sequence, lifestyle, and multi-drug resistance of the human pathogen Corynebacterium resistens DSM 45100 isolated from blood samples of a leukemia patient. BMC Genomics. 2012;13(1): 141.BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium resistens was initially recovered from human infections and recognized as a new coryneform species that is highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. Bacteremia associated with this organism in immunocompromised patients was rapidly fatal as standard minocycline therapies failed. C. resistens DSM 45100 was isolated from a blood culture of samples taken from a patient with acute myelocytic leukemia. The complete genome sequence of C. resistens DSM 45100 was determined by pyrosequencing to identify genes contributing to multi-drug resistance, virulence, and the lipophilic lifestyle of this newly described human pathogen. RESULTS: The genome of C. resistens DSM 45100 consists of a circular chromosome of 2,601,311 bp in size and the 28,312-bp plasmid pJA144188. Metabolic analysis showed that the genome of C. resistens DSM 45100 lacks genes for typical sugar uptake systems, anaplerotic functions, and a fatty acid synthase, explaining the strict lipophilic lifestyle of this species. The genome encodes a broad spectrum of enzymes ensuring the availability of exogenous fatty acids for growth, including predicted virulence factors that probably contribute to fatty acid metabolism by damaging host tissue. C. resistens DSM 45100 is able to use external L-histidine as a combined carbon and nitrogen source, presumably as a result of adaptation to the hitherto unknown habitat on the human skin. Plasmid pJA144188 harbors several genes contributing to antibiotic resistance of C. resistens DSM 45100, including a tetracycline resistance region of the Tet W type known from Lactobacillus reuteri and Streptococcus suis. The tet(W) gene of pJA144188 was cloned in Corynebacterium glutamicum and was shown to confer high levels of resistance to tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: The detected gene repertoire of C. resistens DSM 45100 provides insights into the lipophilic lifestyle and virulence functions of this newly recognized pathogen. Plasmid pJA144188 revealed a modular architecture of gene regions that contribute to the multi-drug resistance of C. resistens DSM 45100. The tet(W) gene encoding a ribosomal protection protein is reported here for the first time in corynebacteria. Cloning of the tet(W) gene mediated resistance to second generation tetracyclines in C. glutamicum, indicating that it might be responsible for the failure of minocycline therapies in patients with C. resistens bacteremia

he author gives a brief history of research in nematology of insects. He presents and discusses the principal finding in this discipline, regarding parasitism observed in insects in the neotropical region. Only the parasitic nematodes on the general cavity are dealt with, while nematodes of the medical and veterinarian types are excluded. A briel· account is given of parasitism caused by the following types of nematodes: Allantonematidae, Aphelenchoididae, Merm thidae, Oxyridae, Rhabditidae and Thelastomatidae. The cases of parasitism mentioned in the literature are reportd, but there are few. With the exception of Brazil, in the case of OXYUROIDEA, no country has had a continuing program of studies in this area. The influence of these nematodes on the host insects is discussed: reduction of fertility rate, sterility or mortality. The nematodes, being one of the factors limiting the growth of insect populations, can be used in certain cases in an integrated control program. Many cases of parasitism observed on Chrysomelidae and Nitidulidae (Coieopetera) in French Guyana are presented. The author concludes that our knowledge on the subject is very limited in the neotropical region, and thus a large field of studies remains open

Event plan: Thirty and fabulous- Birthday party

This product-orientated thesis had a clear objective as to study planning an event in theory and to create amazing, flashy, perfectly executed and well-remembered event for the commissioner Blance Briel. Blanche Briel is planning to start a company once she feels like she has gained enough experience in the field. One of the objectives was as well to teach the commissioner the do’s and don'ts of the event planning industry. The plan was to give the commissioner better idea how to keep within budget, stay in track of time and how to execute well designed plan. The birthday party was organized by the author of this thesis, the commissioner and with the help of friends and family of the commissioner. To the theory part of the thesis has been collected important information of planning a bigger private event like 30th birthday party with a bigger number of guests. Planning an event is a vast and big project, which is very time consuming and needs great concentration from the organizer to be successful. Planning an event has several stages, and each previous completed step effects the next stage. The event organizer must be ready for quick changes as well as to be ready to make quick decisions. The process of planning an event usually includes all together three stages, pre-, during- and post event phases. To create successful event all the stages must be planned and executed with great care. As the event gets bigger, the importance of delegating tasks and responsibility grows significantly, thus the project manager has a great responsibility to choose the right people for different tasks. Product part has been executed from the knowledge and competence that has been collected into the theory part as well as from personal experiences. The methods used for the work were desk research and semi-structured qualitative research. The final product of this project is the event plan for the beautiful and fun birthday party called Thirty and fabulous which was kept on the 19th of May 2018 and the venue was located in Viikki, Helsinki. The objectives were partially reached. The budget was exceeded just a little circa 7 percent. The food would have finished if all the guests would have arrived and the event did not gather as many guests as the commissioner had wished and the commissioner did not feel like she learned anything new
